The NFL Salary cap could be over $250+ million this season. Teams with the most cap room are Washington , New England , Chicago , Tennessee Titans , Cinncinnati , Houston , Detroit and Arizona.
Kansas City picked up the option on Chris Jones and the hope is they can do a long term contract ahead. I do think KC needs to tag Sneed because he's a hell of a good CB. The team though only has $15 million in cap space before Veach can set about getting things done.
Meanhile the worst teams in salary cap hell is Miami Dolphins , Buffalo Bills , and the New Orleans Saints (who continue to weirdly keep being in salary cap hell each year). The Saints are nearly $80+ million over the cap right now.

Today after 16 seasons , Matthew Slater announced his retirement. Slater was called the greatest special teams player , by Bill Belichick and he was a Patriots team captain. He went to 10 Pro Bowls in that span for his work on special teams.
I was wondering how well Slater did , just signing 1-3 year deals at times. Well ...his career earnings for what he did was $30+ million. So while not Pat Mahomes single season money , Slater had a solid earning career and congrats to the guy on a 16 year career.

Don't forget how little Slater was on the field for that money. He was a core special teams player, meaning he was there for at least 3 of the 4 special teams plays, and I'm pretty sure Slater was there for all 4. But aside from those - punts, kickoffs, punt returns and kickoff returns, he almost never saw play, and probably only has a few seasons worth of impact on his body for it. Congrats to him, and sorry to see him go. He was VERY good at the job.

The list of 3+ SB wins and 10+ PBs includes:
Tom Brady
Joe Greene

Matthew Slater
Rare company Slater keeps.

Slater miiighghhttttt have had enough impact on his position to qualify as a hall of fame player, but specialty players have some pretty heavy hurdles to overcome for the half to notice them. Here's hoping I hear his name again in 5 years!

As a Special Teams player, Slater is great indeed. He belongs on lists of top 30, maybe top 20 if you are really generous.
But for a Special Teams HoF consideration you are including the return guys, kickers, long-snappers, punters, crazy suicidal tacklers (is that a category?), Deion Sanders and more. Slater's SBs were due to being on the Patriots, period. You could not say he was the reason in any respect. In Baseball terms his WAR value would not be that good.
Right now there are three Special Teams players in the HoF:
-Morten Andersen
-Jan Stenerud
-Ray Guy
So no, Matthew Slater does no belong in the Hall of Fame and about 100,000 NFL fans should riot if that happens. In my opinion he has gotten all the recognition he deserves already.

A 4th Special teams player just was elected into Hall of Fame. Devin Hestor was voted into Hall this year. So its 4. And someone made the case his vote in was....kinda stupid. That Hestor was a great punt returner. But a number of other players eclipse him in return yards , Pro Bowls etc. And Hester did little as a WR too.

There's 5 STers according to the PFHOF. And they noted no gunners.
And Slater was a specialist, so there isn't even one in there yet.
Tasker is on the list, too, for voting in and he's not in yet. Slater has a better career than him.

Hester was pretty fun to watch. When you look at the dual threats, there are guys in the HoF who play on ST but were also great at something besides STs. Devin Hester is a great example of that. Deion Sanders too. Another one I'd put in there like that is Eric Metcalf. If Hester gets in, I put Metcalf in there too and give him way more consideration than Slater.
I won't be one of the guys rioting if Slater gets in, but its kind of a very specialized category to enshrine. But also I admit I'm just not sure how to quantify his contributions.

Slater wasn't one if the guys sho gets the ball, so he is harder to notice. As a Gunner, his effect on the game is best measured by both the number of tackles he made, and by how few punts and kickoffs are even returned at all. The best gunners are close enough to the returner that they are forced to call for a fair catch, and as such are unable to even attempt a return.
On return team, Slater was the Jammer - one of the players whose job it is to disrupt the gunner.
In both cases his effect isn't really noticed on the TV screen. How much of the return by your team happened because of a timely block? How few return attempts do the opponents even try? And how few yards are they limited to when they try? It's kind of like an offensive lineman - when they are doing well you don't hear about individual ones during the game jtself.itself.
When New England was at its peak (after the first run at Superbowls) one of the key things that tilted the difference for them in close games was special teams play. They were typically in the top third in return yardage despite rarely having one of the star return players (only Edelman on punt returns qualifies in my view) and near the top in times a return was never attempted on both punts and kickoffs. Part of that is who is kicking the ball, but the gunner ensures that a good kick doesn't get negated. Slater's special teams play is considered by fans and football insiders as a big part of the "Second Dynasty" era.

No idea how true this is , but a number of FB sports posts are claiming that the next contract Dak Prescott signs , he will command $60 million a season. If this is true it’s borderline insanity.

Looks like the Chiefs have signed punter Matt Araiza, the punter who was dropped like a hot potato when he was named in a lawsuit dealing with a sexual assault of a minor stemming from his college days. He was later dropped from the suit when he filed a defamation suit against the victim.

Yep …it’s been revealed he was falsely accused. But it did impact his life as we saw. Had this not happened, he’d be on Bills roster.
Also he filed a counter suit as she filed a suit case against him 1st.

As this shows, this is Dak’s contract year. He is due to hit the cap at $59+ million.
Mahomes is 3rd on this list.
