Definitely a shocking death. I first learned about this scene from X-Men: TAS. And in there, yes Jean died, but was brought back to life through the Phoenix Force. I thought hat's what happened in the comics, right? Imagine my surprise when I learned no, that didn't happen in the comics:

Eli Bradley PATRIOT has his origin story come true by receiving a transfusion of prototype CAPTAIN AMERICA Isaiah Bradley in YOUNG AVENGERS #12 (Allan Heinberg/Jimmy Cheung)
After fabricating a tale of receiving his faux super-soldier gifts via transfusion from his grandfather Isaiah Bradley, Patriot is revealed to have been using Mutant Growth Hormone to enhance his abilities. Eli quits MGH and becomes a standard costumed athlete hero. A heroic sacrifice later to save Steve Rogers during a Kree/Skull conflict on Earth, Young Patriot finds himself in need a extreme medical intervention...
