What's more fascinating is that it is canon that John started Ororo's collection of plants. She was about to leave the X-Men, and he gave her a cactus from his land, because it was something that reminded him of her.

It was in one of the Giant-Size issues from the 2000s I think. John and Ororo had a confrontation in the DR, and Ororo is pretty much ready to leave as she misses her home. John overhears her with his enhanced senses and ends up going to the attic where she is staying (is it empty at this point) and he gives her a cactus, telling her how it is sharp and rough on the exterior, but sweet on the inside and it's juices could save your life, and how it reminds him of her. It inspired Ororo to stay and start collecting plants. It was picked up at the beginning of Ed Brubaker's run, when Ororo gifts James a vibranium knife in return.

Both were written by Claremont, so I am guessing that we can just assume there was a longer time between they joining the team and his death.
