is the idea to restrict it to characters that were already around when it first came out? or is there leeway on that front?

As long as Dr. Doom is there, the story can go on anyway with little changes. Just check Spider-Man's animated series.

Interesting. I'm unsure if you mean the entire team of Alpha Flight or New Mutants? Kind of doubt it but just checking as none of the other teams - except maybe X-MEN - had their whole team in the original? I would just pick certain ones- e.g. Sasquatch and Puck from AF, etc.

Namor the Sub-Mariner would be a good stand-in for Magneto as someone who straddles the line between hero and villain.

Maybe use certain members of The Frightful Four?

And the idea of a rando Micronauts character like Prince Acroyear or Baron Karza, or Rom character like Hybrid (the mutant / dire wraith hybrid) or Starshine could be fun!

As for the other Secret Wars, I once wrote Ultimate Secret Wars. The story starts the same, but instead of a life raft with the Cabal, the Maker, and Miles, there is a life raft filled with most of the Ultimate heroes who were still around at that point, and it will be up to them to restore the multiverse.

The recent Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars Battleworld 4 issue series used all of those toyline characters, with Zemo leading the baddies (Hobgoblin, Constrictor, Electro) and Spidey teaming up with DD, Falcon and Iceman! It takes place right after Doom's defeat, with Spidey in his black costume (we get to see a little bit of Venom take over when Peter is unconscious). I really liked it, but apparently I was the only one here who read it.

It's interesting that a some of the characters being mentioned as alternates were dead or retired at the time Secret Wars took place. The original Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Book of the Dead and Inactive is SO out of date now it's not even funny.

One team that hasn't been mentioned (though one of its members has) is the Defenders. At the time this was Iceman, Angel, Beast, Valkyrie, Moondragon, and Gargoyle. Seeing them alongside Alpha Flight, Power Man & Iron Fist, Ghost Rider, Daredevil, Dazzler, Shang-Chi, Cloak & Dagger, etc. would've made for a cool, quirky line-up. Hell, even bring in Crystar if you want.
