Didn't see this coming and thought for sure they were luring Peter in to begin with. What with Kafka in the shadows all the time grinning there really seems like there's another shoe waiting to drop, but if nothing else, it's a more interesting way to go about things.

The whole Memory thing is forced considering that it could have been solved in Dark Web. Hell, it STILL can be solved. They both know Maddie. Have Peter agree to share his memories up until Ben was created and boom. It's not perfect but it's definitely a start.

The longer they drag this out, the more ridiculous it becomes.

A reader in 2022 brought up how sympathetic and nuanced these characters once were and the issues of vilifying them given how strongly their stories were initiated on NOT letting their broken pasts determine their future, and their inspirational stances to do the right thing when others would have failed.

… only to have modern writers ignore all that and make them shallow obstacles for Peter to hold little sympathy for. No time for that when we got punching and explosions to get to.

I still remember the real-life Doctor Kafka who inspired the character feeling it was a horrible decision to kill her off and resurrect her as a mentally unsound villain and various readers (particularly women) taking issue with Pete glibly telling a rape survivor who killed her abuser she was supposed to be in prison. There’s just such… problematic… optics at exploiting abuse survivors defined by overcoming their struggles just to create shallow badguys for Peter to tussle with.

This isn’t what these characters were intended to be.

I guess we'll see. However, given that their relationship literally began with Ben saving her from the darkest parts of her soul, her self-loathing and self-hatred and self-destruction, I hope we don't get that downer of an outcome. I feel that would be a huge discredit to their characters.



Spider-Man comics used to have strong messages on genuine healing and overcoming one's demons through love and support. It would be a severe misfire to end this arc with that message lost and buried under cynicism and destructive writing.

Again, preach the gospel.
