The Maverick movie did warn him he and other human pilots would become expendable and replaceable in due time, and the Mission: Impossible series is pitting him against a global AI too. It just seems natural.

Yeah Top Gun's never really quite had a villain except for some unnamed Eastern country, although the fellow pilots and authority figures who don't trust him or think he's reckless are "sort of" the villains.

They did a retro F-14 dogfight, which was fun. So will he get to fly a F-35 - but who has a near peer opponent? Russia, China?

Probably don't want to fight China for marketing reasons. Fighting Islam is getting a bit old. I suggest going full out SF and fight aliens.
