Maybe, but I doubt they actually wanted it to look cheap.

I was kinda being sarcastic because you’re totally right that it does look pretty cheaply made.

It was pretty much obvious, that they would try to save costs, so, I don't get why people are surprised.

Wasn't it reported that it has a 200+ budget?

It was a post on Reddit, not official statement or something.
I mean, I'm just looking at the cast - literally all the actors (except Nicholas Holt, and he's not even close to being a star) are unknown to general audience. It doesn't look like a huge expensive movie.

If they can't even give Superman a proper budget then how ass is The Authority going to look (if that movie is even still happening)?

Proper budget isnt $200+. If you know how to work it, you can get it done on a good $100-$150.

Lol everyone always hates the suits at first reveal (I thought Jackman’s Wolverine suit looked great but there were plenty of complaints I guess).

...I loved the MoS suit on first reveal.

But someone brought up a good point

what if this is Ultraman and not really Superman
    end of spoilers

I can't really say anything before I see it in dynamics.
But absolutely think that the choice of photo was bad. It looks boring and doesn't really serve as a proper first look. If I were them, I would do an homage to the All-Star cover for the first look; it would be much better, and aesthetically it would properly set the stated tone of the movie.
I'm not saying it's bad, it's not. But it's not a great first look.

Maybe they were trying to go for "look how relatable this version of Superman is. He gets dressed like everybody else in a world where world-ending threats happen every day" or something .

No marketing team would self sabotage their own brand for a cheeky prank.

    This is the suit.

Apparently the big tent pole movies for DCU are Batman and Supergirl.

It has been speculated for a long time that the Superman movie is just being made as a showcase to assure the investors that DC has promising IPs. So this movie will mainly set up Supergirl, The Authority, JLI etc.

Gunn directing the movie helps because he is also the head of DCU, so he will keep the future of the franchise in mind while making this movie.

Man, this costume looks cheap and disappointing. I had little expectations from this movie but even then I am shocked.

Maybe I need to wait for another 45 years to get a decent Superman movie.

I'm not wowed by the costume either, but I very much doubt they lowballed the budget for this movie. Stuff like the international location shoots they've been doing for the Fortress alone would be pretty costly (whereas a cheaper film would usually just use greenscreen).

Anyway, I like the suit itself, but it looks too baggy, here. And I hate the New 52 collar, so I find its inclusion baffling (though I guess Gunn did say he likes Morrison's Action Comics). But other than that, I'm digging the brighter colors and that they're keeping the trunks this time. Need to see how it looks in a proper superheroic pose, now.
