Cover Contest 5/27-6/2 That's my favorite!

Ok, so I want to move away from pandemic themes at least for a week, and celebrate the love of comics. And I like themes that reveal something about the poster's tastes in comics and let's voters just pick the cover that resonates best with them, so this week the theme is "That's my favorite artist..." Post a cover by your favorite artist who worked in comics...

There's 2 or 3 that vie for that spot for me, but I will go with this one for my lead off example...

5) Vote by Posting the name in BOLD of the Poster whose cover best fits the theme or that you simply like the most! A vote need not be in bold, but it does make it easier to Count-The-Votes!
6) The Winner of the Contest is the Entry with the MOST Votes after the Voting-Period!
7) It's Okay to Discuss the Covers but if you Think Someone's Entry Doesn't Fit the Theme or Violates the Rules, you Don't need to Argue it in the thread, Simply Don't Vote for It!
8) Plus: Occasionally Voting will Result in a Tie! The Person Who Started the Thread will do the Counting that Week will Usually call for a TIE-Breaking --Vote from Someone who has Not Yet Voted!

Much as I love George Perez, my favorite comic book artist is the immortal Dan DeCarlo of Archie Comics fame, and this is one of my most memorable Betty and Veronica covers with Betty wearing jeans so damn tight, they look spray painted on! And her pose kicked up the cheesecake appeal by a factor of ten! YOWSA! Only Mr. DeCarlo could make a teenage girl in casual clothes look sexy af!

There are so many artists I could have put here: Neal Adams, Jim Aparo, Gil Kane, Mike Grell, Joe Kubert, Art Adams, Tony DeZuniga, Adam Hughes, Bernie Wrightson...The list goes on and on. But when was I getting into superhero comics in my early teens, the book that really hooked me was [I]New Teen Titans[/I] by Wolfman and Perez. So I'm giving this spot to George Perez.

I don’t know what it was about Gil Kane, but as a kid, his covers always drew my eye.Here’s one of the earliest examples of an homage cover I can remember.
I didn’t even realize why it looked familiar at first.

John Byrne for me too. I love the FF, I love She-Hulk, and I absolute love the story, which for a change did not involve superheroes beating up supervillains and was grounded with down-to-Earth issues (as much as it can be dealt with in superhero comics). It was also ahead of its time with the phenomenon of paparazzi. Although one can say that Jackie Kennedy in the 60's started it, the notoriety reached its peak much later with Princess Diana.

I don't know that I have a single favorite artist.

One might think I would automatically post a Kirby cover. But it was Barry Smith's Conan that made me an avid comic reader and collector. And while I could use one of his later covers, when he became a master draftsman, I am choosing my favorite story from his early run, when he was raw but full of energy.

Carl Barks is my choice. There's a lot of artists I like, though.

There are lots of artists whose work I admire.
That criteria alone do not narrow the choice down for me.
However, as far as covers go, one Bob Larkin work does check all the boxes.

I have several artists whose art I enjoy greatly but I don't have a favourite artist per se.

Like many, it's difficult to pick a favorite artist for myself as there are instances when I prefer one to another, but books by Howard Chaykin always seems to get my money. I wanted so much to go full on Chaykin and post the removed cover for Divided States of Hysteria as being pretty symbolic of Chaykin's style, but it doesn't appear to have ever appeared on anything. So, I'm going mainstream and some Lantern Love.

Pre-Jackie the star-stalking photogs, etc., were already (or concurrently) prevalent in Europe, what with starlets and celebs and the like at Cannes and other places. Fellini famously memorialized this in his 1960 film La Dolce Vita, which includes a photographer character named Paparazzo...purported to be the origin of the word "paparazzi" (plural for paparazzo).

My favorite Frank Brunner cover, with a personal story to go with it. When this was published, my father worked for a religious publishing company. They saw the success of Spire Christian Comics and decided to try publishing some comics themselves. They hired Tony Tallarico to produce them. When I saw early copies of the first two comics, I thought they looked terrible. Seeing them again in recent years, they don't seem as bad, but they were definitely out of step with the comics world of 1974. So, trying to be helpful, I gave my father some recent comics that I thought had great art, so he could show his co-workers how badly Tallarico had missed the mark. I had enough sense not to give him an issue of [i]Son of Satan[/i], but I did give him this issue. His co-workers took one look at the subtitle "Master of the Mystic Arts" and my original point about the art was forgotten; they were concerned that my soul was in danger from this Satanic comic book. Fortunately my father knew me better than that, and the whole thing blew over. The company lost their shirts on the Tallarico comics. Four were published, and they're very rare today - look up Logos comics.

So hard to choose. But I'm mostly a Batman guy so I think it has to be a Bat-artist. I think probably the finest illustrator to ever work on Batman was the late and still lamented Don Newton. And his Phantom was even better.

Frank Quitely

I was a bit torn. Probably the first artist that left a big impression on me was when Prince Valiant was running as comic strip in the Sunday papers my Dad would buy. Little did I know that Hal Foster lived not that far away in Evanston, Illinois. The next one I would say that caught my eye was Frank Frazetta, again due to my father who would buy Creepy and Eerie horror magazines for us to read.

I have many favorite cover artists today, among them Alex Maleev, Art Adams, George Perez and many more. Hard to pick just one.

But I'm going back to my intro to Marvel Comics and that would be Jack Kirby and his Fantastic Four covers. My brother still has this comic boxed up. The other artists from that era that left a big impression on me were Gene Colan and Jim Steranko.

But wow, Google was no help in finding out anything about Logos Comics. Very interesting! Spire Comics were pretty good quality, which was unusual at the time for anything Christian in publishing. The other Christian comic strip to come close in terms of quality were the adventures of Tullus.

Speaking of Frank Brunner, and indie books, did you know he and his wife joined publisher Mike Friedrich and put out their own comic book in the 1970s?
