Is it making a noise, like it needs a new battery?
Does it emit some sort of light?
Definitely check with someone (like a landlord) to see if there's a problem with the device. Or, it might be trying to tell you something.
As someone that has installed fire and carbon monoxide alarms (my grandmother owns several apartments that I've helped with); at least where those are, its by law to have one per bedroom. So I would call the landlord before doing anything.
