I think it's just more of the usual loose continuity of the series. Maybe there were plans for more movies that would bridge the gap and explain why Jean was back after dying/evolving/whatever in DP, but the Disney sale ended that.
The ending is literally the same as X2. She saves her family and forms into psychic energy shaped like a Phoenix. I don’t think it needs much explaining.

I really like Jessica Chastian's performance and manner, while her character was too bland, what a waste.
I’m confused about something.
Did this movie changed the ending of DOFP?
At the end of DOFP, Xavier was still running the school, we also see Jean in Xavier’s office.
Doesn’t the end of DOFP supposed to be in the same timeline as DP?
The X-Men films have never cared about having a timeline that makes sense. They can't get things straight from one movie to the next let alone have an overreaching timeline.

Never let continuity and storybuilding get in the way of short-term profits has always been the FOX-Men motto!

To be fair it already did quite well compare to most of the superhero franchise.
And both Marvel and DC comics never care about continuity as well.

They have hiccups Fox barely makes sense film to film since Last Stand.

The ending narration tells you that Jean is alive. It spoon-feeds it to you.

DC flopped before it could have continuity errors. So who did they do "quite well" compared to?

It was able to go for nearly 20 years, that alone is a big success compare to other superhero franchises. if Singer hadn't left for SR it would have been handled even better.
And remember, Kevin Feige was also the producer of X-Men for a while, without the experience and lesson he had learned from these movies, there would be no MCU. MCU is good but it didn't come from nowhere.

They have plenty to hang their hat on and the much better MCU movies owe them a debt. They did set the stage and deserve credit for that.
None of that excuses their awful continuity. In fact, the horrid planning, forced cameos, inexplicable continuity are exactly what the MCU learned to avoid. Fox never did and their early momentum was slowly strangled by their incompetence.

More like dragged through. Like the final four season of most long running tv shows.

Hypotheticals. This isn't the first franchise to have behind-the-scenes troubles. It is the one that whines the most about it though.

Feige has worked on almost every single Marvel movie since 2000. The most he learned from X-Men seem to be what not to do.
This is like giving your crappy fouth grade teacher credit when you become an astronaut.

It's already been nearly 20 years, even MCU has only been 11 years. If it was that bad it wouldn't last that long. It's not TV shows, it's movies, the box office and reviews are harsh enough to kill off bad franchises within 3-5 years.

Just saying it would be better since most of the problem came after he left. Starting from X-3.

Not really, X-Men got quite a few good movies and was able to go through without hard reboot, that's worthy to give credit to.
Like or not, it's been there for 20 years, and its original material never ever cared about continuity, it's not like they turned gold into turd.

Not really, both MARVEL and DC NEVER care about retcon and consistency at all. Look at any of their issue throughout 20 years pretty much everything has been changed back and forth. As movie materials most of them(beside a few characters and plot) are just meh.
I don't think it's fair to be too harsh on a 19 years old movie franchise over consistency when its original material never cares about it.

When the very next movie ignores the biggest plot points from the previous movie, yes, it is entirely justified to call them out.
