If Miles gets powers I could see it as a way of tutorial mode where we play as the inexperienced Miles Morales learning how his powers work, and then we cut to Peter when the player knows how to do it.
I could definitely see Miles set up for a potential sequel if not playable here since a coop Spider-man game is largely an untapped idea.
I mentioned in the Miles Morales post that I can totally see a sequel to this game being called "Spider-Men", where both Miles and Peter have to team up in order to take down the big bad. You pick who to play as at the start like in, "Dishonorable 2", and depending on who you choose the play style and some story bits might change here and there.

This is saying 'very close friend', which sounds like not dating.

I got the sense from the trailer and the way Peter was talking towards her that there is very probably something romantic going on between them.
I don't think he would have brought up "maybe Peter Parker can finally have a life" towards her if that didn't mean them being together without Peter being Spider-Man hanging over or complicating the relationship.

Also why did they make MJ into Lois Lane (working @ the Bugle)?
What's wrong with the supermodel party girl?

Maybe because they didn't want to have Peter working there and like Amy Adam's Lois Lane :p?
Although I guess it gives Mary Jane a more plausible reason to get involved in the story beyond just being Peter's love interest (not that it stopped her before), and I guess it explains why she's a lot more soft-spoken in this compared to usual.

MJ as journalist was done in the Ultimate Spider-Man comics (and later the USM cartoon.) It's easier to get her closer to the action if she's of a profession that would necessitate her being closer to the action.
(Although I agree it is too similar to Lois Lane.)

My gut tells me this has also been done to move away from the supermodel/party girl/sex bomb 616 version because the dolts who are making this game probably view classic MJ as somehow sexist.

I think it's an homage to Ultimate Spider-Man. Although the comics themselves have moved away from "sex bomb" (what does that even mean?).

Miles resembles his voice actor, Nadji Jeter, on the new Spider-Man cartoon. Wonder if he did mo-cap for this game.

Well, she is and always will be a bombshell in her own right ;).

I wonder if he's voicing Miles?
I'm actually kind of surprised we don't have Robbie Daymond voicing Spidey in this.

Mary Jane is supposed to be very attractive. It's the use of "sex bomb" that I question. What does that even mean?
