Fairy Tail
Sad to see the Anime & Manga board gone!
To avoid spoiling people in the omnibus threads (or having to talk in all-spoilers all the time), I'm creating a Fairy Tail thread for discussing the manga/anime.
Lucy Heartfilia, a young summoner, joins the infamous magic guild Fairy Tail after meeting Natsu Dragneel, a rowdy fire mage from FT looking for his adoptive dragon father. Along with Natsu's talking cat Happy, they gradually form a questing group with Gray Fullbuster, an ice mage with a compulsive stripping habit, and Erza Scarlet, a stern armor mage. The guild finds itself pulled into conflicts as shadowy villains seek to revive the ancient black mage Zeref.
Crunchyroll has the latest manga chapter legitimately free to read. (Back issues require a paid membership though.)
It also has most of the anime episodes (currently missing eps 13-48), but the latest episode is paid-only (basically the reverse of the manga situation).
Hulu also has most episodes.
The artist regularly posts sketches on his Twitter feed.
Here there be manga spoilers!

So, chapter 384.
IT'S HAPPENING!
Things unfolded a lot better than I expected. I was wondering how the three spirits were going to turn things around in a reasonable manner, and it turns out they couldn't. Instead, Lucy and Aquarius got a nice moment, and Lucy finally summoned the Spirit King!
Lucky the falling Cube rubble didn't crush Magnolia. (OTOH, if it had passed out of Magnolia airspace, does that mean it already finished razing the town? Bad day.)
It'd be neat we got a quest arc for reforging Aquarius's key. Particularly since having all 12 might become important later in the plot. But more likely, it'll get quick-fixed by something else.
-
These last two chapters were great
-
New anime episode's out. Good timing on the Lucy-centric fight and Aquarius appearance!
Looks like there's at least one more week of Executioner fights to go, though. Urgh. The filler padding is reasonably entertaining and in-character, but doesn't get anywhere fast.
-
I have been loving the Lucy-focused material so far. It's always great when she gets to show off that she's not just bumbling comic relief and fan-service.
And the insight into Aquarius and how she viewed her relationship with Lucy was awesome but heartbreaking and really made the whole scenario in this latest chapter emotional. Also, Lucy's new power didn't come from a nakama power up or any of that feelings stuff. It was a sacrifice that worked because Lucy's grown strong enough to pull it off and Aquarius was there to tell her what had to be done. Great stuff.
And the Spirit King swooping in was badass, almost as badass as the last page with the two kings staring off against each other. My main concern would be what happened to the other Fairy Tail wizards when the monster HQ was destroyed.
And the filler in this week's anime was just horrendous. It completely ruined the pacing of the fight with the executioners. Those fights are supposed to be quick to show that these guys were never a threat to Fairy Tail in the first place.
-
Chapter 385
Aw, for a sec I thought Juvia had come to the rescue. But whoa, Stellar Spirit Lucy fusion actually happened  I can't tell if it gives her command of water powers, or just auto-defense. Probably going to wear off next week.
Hit by Urano Metria. Is this the end (again) for Jackal?
Celestial Spirit King is causing lots of landscape damage, but mostly missing his target. And it feels too early for King of Hades to get taken out. Not sure how to end this fight gracefully.
Everyone else still MIA.
-
Damn!
Celestial Spirit King vs Marde Guille is epic as all fuck but Lucy ain't gonna stand on the side lines being useless.
Urano Meteoria FTW suckers!!!
-
FINALLY, the anime got through the Executioners! While seeing more paper colors was neat, they didn't exactly blow the budget on Mira vs Kamika.
Hopefully they're planning to blow it on next week's ep, because it's do-or-die time with the threesome.
-

Yeah, and they couldn't even get the pacing right for this final installment.
Though I did enjoy a lot of the filler material they sprakled into it all.
From the preview it does look like the threesome throwdown will get some nice animation.

Remember when Sayla said her bomb was about 500x stronger than Jupiter? I just realized that if you go by blast volume, it works out to "only" an 8x larger blast radius:

(Old guild building. Smaller circle is Jupiter estimate.)
That's still bigger than the explosion we got, but not as town-engulfing as I initially imagined. (OTOH, the shockwave would destroy a wider radius than the fireball.)

Yeah, what Sayla's bomb did wasn't anything that Natsu hasn't done by himself. If it had been that much stronger than Jupiter it probably would've killed a bunch of civilians and Mashima probably didn't want that kind of downer at the big battle.
-

Then again, Cube just razed at least a chunk of town anyway, including the cathedral.

Chapter 386!
Huh, so undoing Alegria required extra work on top of destroying Cube. Surprisingly, the Stellar Spirit King even petrified Mard Geer (for now?).
Dang, suddenly a 4-on-4 battle. Chances are it'll break up into 1-on-1s, though. But what matchups?
Tempester learned a new trick. Somebody still needs to collect a blood sample from him for Luxus et al.
Erza's free, but still stuck in her scheduled Minerva rematch away from the others.
How many demons left? FT's odds suddenly seem a lot better, and the Oracion Seis haven't shown up yet.
Defeated:
Franmalth
Ezel
Sayla
Lamy
Jackal
Cube
Mard Geer
Active:
Minerva
Kyouka
Trafzer
Ki-Su
Tempester
Silver
Then there's E.N.D.
Hmm, so everyone's pretty much accounted for. Unless Natsu's group starts losing, there doesn't seem a whole lot left for Gerard's group to do.
-
Awesome chapter. But I'm partial since I do love a good Big Damn Heroes moment.
Let's rock!
Huh, so undoing Alegria required extra work on top of destroying Cube. Surprisingly, the Stellar Spirit King even petrified Mard Geer (for now?).
I really doubt that he's completely defeated. He'll be out of the game while Fairy Tail beats up the other demons and then he'll come back somehow.
Dang, suddenly a 4-on-4 battle. Chances are it'll break up into 1-on-1s, though. But what matchups?
The match-ups were pretty obviously set up in this chapter I think.
Gajeel vs. Torafusa
Juvia vs. Keith
Gray vs. Silver (will be interesting to see since Silver seems to be on a completely different level)
Natsu vs. Tempesta
Tempester learned a new trick.
Probably has something to do with his new body.
Active:
Minerva
Kyouka
Trafzer
Ki-Su
Tempester
Silver
Then there's E.N.D.

Well, Kyouka doesn't have a new opponent yet so who knows what she'll be doing Chances are that she'll try to wake up E.N.D.
And my official guess for Silver's identity is that he's Gray's son from the future.
-
Episode 9
Woohoo, the animation picked up for the threesome  The whole three-way exchange went a lot faster than I thought they'd ever animate. Hope they can keep it up! (Or at least not regress all the way back.)
I like the sound effect for Minerva's magic.
Kagura's eyes are being drawn really big compared to the manga.
-
That threeway fight was some awesome I was sad that it ended so quickly. But its brevity was probably one of the reason why they could do such an excellent job with it.
Hopefully they'll make Erza vs. Kagura awesome as well, maybe even improve it in general.
-

If I have one wish for Erza vs Kagura, it's that they extend the last part into a proper fight.

Fairy Tail 387
Mushroom pimple Franmalth is kinda freaky. But he lives! Meanwhile, Ezel died for nothing. Ha-ha!
The group fight's pretty tame so far. But Tempester is definitely multi-element now.
I totally thought Erza vs Minerva would get offscreened for several more weeks, but it looks like it's happening first. Let's see what new tricks Minerva's got.
-
Some interesting developments here.
Seems like Gray has an idea about who Silver is.
Tempesta apparently has several kinds of elemental powers at his disposal. Wonder if that was always the case.
Mushroom form of Franmalth is an interesting addition.
And... that is one really good way of escalating the situation.
-
Episode 10
Curses, they cheaped out on Kagura destroying Erza  Hopefully the next-ep preview means they'll be embellishing on the latter part of the fight.
-
Chapter 388
Goodbye, twintails :( But short hair looks good on Wendy too.
Erza vs Minerva did not deliver. I guess Minerva could still do something in upcoming chapters though. And Erza's still short an onscreen fight.
Nice entrance by Sabertooth! Hope they get to show off a bit, though their odds of winning against Mard Geer don't look good.
-
Goodbye, twintails :( But short hair looks good on Wendy too.
I suppose it made sense for the moment, given the asymmetry and all...but...NOOOOO! Oh god, it's Emma Watson all over again!
Erza vs Minerva did not deliver. I guess Minerva could still do something in upcoming chapters though. And Erza's still short an onscreen fight.
Definitely did not expect this. Thought there would be some drawn out battle between them, but looks like she's getting face heel turned hard and fast. I guess she has been getting into quite a few scuffles with Erza lately and he thought it'd be repetitive.
Nice entrance by Sabertooth! Hope they get to show off a bit, though their odds of winning against Mard Geer don't look good.
I wonder if Marde knows about the Shadow that was with Rogue during the tournament.
-
What the hell is up with Japan and cutting your hair to symbolize development!
It's a horrible idea.
Long black hair>>>>>Short Hair
And things were going to so well too.
I blame Ezra. This arc was going well, but nooo we needed to get her usual underwhelming fight scenes and god forbid she ever loses.
Meh.
-
Also, the old guild master for sabertooth is confirmed for Ultimate Asshole of Fairy Tail. Seriously, fuck that guy
-
Huh, that is not how I pictured a chapter called Erza vs. Minerva going. In both good and bad ways.
I'm mainly annoyed because Mashima always does this with his major female villains. They always pull a big face heel turn that reveals that all their hatred and evil was just hiding sadness and stuff. I don't really mind it here though as it is presented rather well, if a bit sudden. Just wish it wasn't done for all the big lady villains.
Besides that I generally like this chapter. While I too will miss long haired Wendy I think that we're missing out on another important thing here. She can air-bend well enough to use her arm as a sharp blade now. While not as big as pulling off dragon force it does show that her casual control has truly increased and she's ready to kick some more ass. I like it.
I didn't even mind the fight or Erza winning it all that much. It wasn't all that spectacular and part of that is because Minerva wasn't really into it. She was just directing her own self-loathing at Erza and when she wasn't able to do that she just lost the will to fight any more, making herself easy prey for Erza. As far as non-sensical victories for Erza goes, this one is pretty good all things considered.
As for the ending. I'm intrigued. Mashima has done very well in giving Wendy and Lucy spotlight time to be amazingly awesome so I don't mind if he gives Sting and Rogue the same treatment. They really need it and I'm looking forward to them being badass and someone mentioning how they're much stronger now that during the tournament. I doubt that they'll win but I'm hoping that they'll surprise Mard Geer somewhat.

Episode 11
Arrrgh, so disappointed with this episode
- Archenemy just frickin' taps against Erza's sword
- Straight-up blocking instead of deflecting overhead
- No shoulder wound to account for last week's blood-splash
- No fight extension, but plenty of palace scenes to break the flow and pad for time
- Dinky little rock doesn't even scuff up Erza's foot compared to her other foot
Erza vs Kagura was the one fight I wanted them to fix a little, and they just phoned it in
-
It's a nice cartoon series but I don't ave a favorite yet so if I have to chooses who I like the most for now, then Natsu it is.
-
Yeah.
The latest episode was very much not good at improving the Erza/Kagura situation. And I don't even mean the awesometastic fluid animation kind of improvement. The whole thing was just sadly static in terms of motion.
Between this and the average animation for the symbolism for Neji's freedom bird-no jutsu in the Naruto anime it's been a disappointing week in the anime regard.

Chapter 389
Man, why didn't they have Ki-Su revive the chairman in the first place? Every chapter makes it increasingly clear that Ezel REALLY died for nothing :p
Since Kyouka's the only demon available, I guess she'll be guarding the zombie chairman against Erza and Minerva. (Wait, that's 2v1. One of them could just keep Kyouka busy while the other goes after the Chairman. Unless Kyouka takes one of them out instantly. Or can remotely control Minerva since she's a test-tube demon. Or if Sayla also woke up, or was zombified too, so that it can be 2v2.)
Looks like next week we'll finally get some answers about Silver.
-
Gray's father as expected...but with a twist. One that I honestly had not expected.
Fuckin' Deliora! Holy crap.
The 3 vs. 3 battle is going rather poorly for Fairy Tail at the moment. I think Natsu and Gajeel are trading blows with the wrong matchups. Juvia doesn't seem to be doing much better, though her water did seem to be the only thing that even remotely bothered Keese in earlier chapters.
I wonder if Deliora was always an ice demon or if he just learned it over the last 7 or so years as ironic revenge.
-
Gray's father as expected...but with a twist. One that I honestly had not expected.
I would've been blown away too, if I hadn't seen someone guess it in a different forum last week. I immediately liked the idea, aside from Deliora not using ice AFAIK.
I wonder if Deliora was always an ice demon or if he just learned it over the last 7 or so years as ironic revenge.
I figure the latter, since Gray would've had stronger feelings about learning ice magic if it were also Deliora's weapon.
I wonder if Gray's father's body was decayed, and restored when Deliora possessed it, or if it was somehow preserved over 10 years by cold weather.
Is it safe for Minerva to be touching Franmalth? I guess she's wearing gloves, if that makes a difference.
-
Well, that is like a super-fuck you to Gray. Good twist.
And none of the other good guys seem to be making much headway in their battles. But these things can change on a dime in this series so we'll see.
Does this mean that Lullaby could be lurking around somewhere as well?
-
Does this mean that Lullaby could be lurking around somewhere as well?
That'd be neat, although you'd expect it to be a Kyuukimon. Then again, Doriarte was slumming around in Medusa Eye, and he had a pretty hax power too.
-
Man I called that as soon as we saw Silver. Though not quite in this way.
-
Episode 13
Gazille vs Rogue got kind of shortchanged in animation, but some of the other fights in this ep were pretty good. (IMO Gazille's big moment should've gotten the budget that went to the executioner rematch, but Jura's scene helped make up for it.)
And wow, things are wrapping up next week. That's quicker than I expected.
-
The animation was kinda all over the place in this episode.
Hopefully they'll focus some more of the quality on the finishing blows in next week's episode.

Chapter 391
Damn, I can't believe I forgot the standard perks of Slayer magic. Deliora could probably even eat Iced Shell now. Some nice moves by Gray, but nothing's working too well.
Gray might have some new scars after this. I always found it interesting that he scars but Erza doesn't.
-
I love this chapter.
Gray went from understandable rage attacks to more clever tactics (I really liked his trump card move) but none of it worked on Deliora. Good coreography and techniques. Great battle all around, does Gray always get the best fights or not?
Hoping that the high note continues over to the next chapter.

Though, I'm a bit confused about the Fairy Girls and Blue Mistral series. Are they AU or in continuity? Really looking forward to the Mavis series.

I get the impression Blue Mistral is AU. Not sure about Fairy Girls.
