In short, I think transhumanism is a bollocks fantasy for nerds, and the future of humanity is up for grabs.

I like the idea of transhumanism in general. (Don't get me started on that 'Singularity' nonsense, though.) I've been imagining an RPG scenario with a transspeciesist faction for a while now. Upgrading ourselves to survive hostile environments and better handle emergencies seems like a near-necessity if we want to leave the planet and survive as a species/'evolve' into a descendant species. I don't think it's going to happen in reality, though.
As for the future of humanity in general, I'm pessimistic. I suspect we won't go out with a bang, but with a whimper. Give us a few hundred years, and we won't be gone, (yet) but we'll probably be poorer, have used up most of our remaining resources, and not have accomplished much to alleviate our problems, and only going downhill from there.

Orphan Black is a great show...

Ha! That's funny. They know Xavier's school is a death sentence...
I had to look up transhumanism. Nope, that's not going to happen.

That recent flop Transcendence was based on transhumanism. So things like:
> A.I. more intelligent than humans
> Mind uploading
> Nanotech that can self replicate
> SINGULARITY
Its a common theme in comics; Days of Futures Past, Winter Soldier, Future's End, ect

Yeah, it's been happening in science fiction for a while. Just like flying cars.
I saw a dude on TV the other day who had one of the more advanced prosthesis' i've seen. It was some daytime TV show.
It looked liked one of the cybernetic arms people have in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and worked almost as well as a regular fleshy arm. What wasn't obvious, was how much crushing power it had, or if it could be upgraded with secreted blades, devastating firepower or concussive energy blasts.
All I need is a screwdriver index finger and rollerskate shoes

It sounds like wishful thinking.

Ultimately? We're doomed.

It's fun for SF, but I'm skeptical that it would ever really happen on a large-scale basis in reality.
I expect it'll be kind of like the development of computers: it will happen, but in ways completely different than any sf writer expects. There will be a million little things that no one could have predicted, and they'll cumulatively create a radically-different world.
The future, on the other hand, will probably happen on schedule.
