R.I.P Teena Marie
^Hands down my favorite Teena Marie song. She passed in 2010 and it had to be Black Expo 2009 or maybe even 2010, she was performing at the free concert downtown that year with a bunch of other acts like at every Indianapolis Expo. I was working weekends at the time and ironically I was working at (not for) the radio station building not quite a half mile from the free concert venue. It was on a Sunday and I knew she was coming and she has always been on of my favorite entertainers of all time but I got off work at like 5 and it rained that weekend but they still did the show and I just didn't go. I Passed on the crowd, passed on the rain and passed on a change of clothes at work to walk downtown, couldn't be bothered with it- she died not long after that. Point being if a musical performer MEANS something to you and you haven't seen them- try to just fkn do it. The music will be around but the performers are human and a lot of the old school ones are falling away. If it's about the bread just pay it, the memory and the experience is what's important.

Two holiday's that coincidentally line-up perfect for visits to shake joints are Valentine's Day and Halloween. Many moons ago (when I attended such establishments) when CrazySexyCool was out and sold about a thousand million records off the singles Creep and Waterfalls, there were two other jams that got pretty heavy rotation on the titty bar front. A YouTube video doesn't do it listening justice when you have a DJ spinning a vinyl record with several bass heavy 5 foot speakers in a bar that used to be a house. RIP Shannon's Roaring Twenties, the best shake joint in the history of Indianapolis.

It's a shame how MC Lyte doesn't get the recognition she deserves for being a female rapper who made some serious headway during the early 90's

One of my Mom's old favourites:

This song was groundbreaking in the 90s - and a nice comeback for a singer who had a couple of big hits in the 60s and then dropped out of sight because her club foot prevented her from touring and promoting her music.

(I like this lyric a lot better than "Another Man" - it shows a better understanding of gay men in denial who marry women IMHO)
