When I played this I made it through the woods at the start of the game. but when I got out of the woods and into the ice cave all my characters were level 99. This really takes the challenge out of the game and makes it no fun.
Is there a way to avoid this?
There are different "boosters" you can activate in the Config menu. Make sure they're deactivated.
