Hell yeah! Always felt like Routh got shafted, he had a really good Superman performance in him. Hope he gets to shine!
I'm super-excited to see Routh get another shot at Supes. All those Superman gags finally bore fruit :).
I like Brandon Routh, but I always thought he’d make a better Shazam than Superman or Atom. Not that I don’t enjoy him in Legends, but my understanding is that Arrowverse Ray isn’t very similar to comic Ray since he was supposed to be Ted Kord.
Routh had to work with an underwhelming movie from Singer. He had a good performance but the lack of action was appalling. Singer was a detriment to the Superman franchise.
The Superman Returns plane scene is seriously one of my favorite Superman scenes. Such a great action sequence. The rest of the movie is definitely flawed and underwhelming. But Routh was a great Superman/Clark Kent and he's done such an awesome job as Atom on LoT. Very excited for him to suit back up as Superman.
I wonder if they'll get a Lois to go along with him here. Durrance is already in the CW pool with her role on Supergirl last season. She'd actually make pretty great Lois to go along with Routh's Superman. The odds of Welling suiting up are probably slim to none, so it'd let them incorporate nods to Smallville and Superman Returns.
In the few times that I've actually watched Superman Returns it always felt to me like the sum total of Singer's on-set instructions and direction to Routh amounted to 'Do your best Christopher Reeve impression'. That was it.
I was very happy to see Routh given a second chance with DC and he's turned in a far better performance as Ray Palmer. Glad to see him put on the red cape again.
This and the simultaneously-announced return of Hoechlin felt like they HAD to be givens but at the same time I was afraid to believe. So glad Routh's getting a chance at vindication as a potential A+ Superman here; I'm seeing people on Twitter say 'sources' claim Routh is playing a Kingdom Come-esque take on Superman, and if that simply means him playing a seasoned, mournful take on the character (and of course wearing a version of that suit) I'd be all-in for that. Hell, he was already sorta playing that in Returns - experienced, weighed down by the world but still determine to do right, objectively a dick in ways that apparently didn't fully register to the creators but conveying that Superman vibe so powerfully you almost don't notice. And this time he'll get to play that type of Superman in something good! And without the involvement of multiple accused pedophiles, no less!
So if reports are right about Welling in the last season of Arrow, he's pretty much gotta be in this as Superman too, right? Will he finally cross that threshold? Either way gimmie that Rosenbaum/Cryer teamup, throw Shea in on top for good measure. Also have Tulloch come back and comfort Hatcher's Lois, who tearfully explains her Clark died taking a Kryptonite egg to the face.
Glad he has the chance to play Superman again.

I liked Superman Returns and happy he's getting another shot.

His world has probably been destroyed like 90s Barry was. Hopefully including that creep Kevin Spacey. So Clark is probably gonna be a little sulky, maybe changes his costume to a Black S.
When I read this news this morning, CW'S COIE went from being a highly anticipated TV event to one of the greatest events I've ever anticipated in any medium.
I really admire Brandon Routh. And when he talks about Superman at comic con panels or in interviews, he clearly takes the responsibility of being Superman seriously.
I wonder if he'll have cut his hair by then--or will he be the mullet Superman?
I liked Superman Returns and happy he's getting another shot.
Same, I'm kind of freaking out with joy because I loved him in the role. However, I'm nervous because the CW writers often let me down, especially how they write Superman.......
Also hope Jon Cryer returns as Lex!
(Head explodes from the sheer awesomeness) It's not likely but I hope he's playing the Returns version of Superman. Just to officially connect the movies with the TV show universes. I doubt they'll get Welling into the suit though. They couldn't even do that on his own show. But who knows. Returns Superman with no Spacey and no Singer sounds like a good redemption arc.

It wouldn't be KC Supes without his distinctive suit and gray sides.
Not that it'd be worth losing Hoechlin and the potential for him getting a show by a long shot, BUT if the constant theorizing that he'll die in Crisis pans out it'd be dope if Routh as Superman stuck around as an occasional senior figure/leader for the shared universe. He'd be off in his own corner so there'd be less worry of him 'outshining' anyone - especially Kara - the way they're clearly worried about, and less questions about why he doesn't show up. But as an isolated figure in the multiverse thoroughly apart from the regular proceedings, it might reinforce his status more than Hoechlin is able to get as a 'regular' Superman from not even the 'main' universe as the primal figure of this entire narrative cosmos. Much prefer if Routh heroically sacrifices himself alongside Shipp's Flash or something to save reality if one's gotta go though (and I feel like that's incredibly likely so they can kill off a Flash and somebody with an s-shield with history attached to them for this while sparing Flash and Supergirl). Or better yet he lives and is a recurring guest star on the Hoechlin Superman show that I demand spins out of this.
I kind of wonder if they aren't setting him up to be an E-2 Superman type figure. He's older than "mainstream" Supes and since Routh already has a role in Arrowverse, he's sacrificial. He can be the one to deliver the "killing" blow like in the book. I doubt he'll be returning after this. I'm more curious who Welling is playing.

Routh is actually younger than Tom Welling (39 vs 41) so it'd be funny for him to play the "old" Superman to Welling and Hoechlin (who's 31). I think the Earth 2 part is probably where this is going. That also would explain the Kingdom Come rumor as plenty of people would be see a gray templed version and assume it was that as it's the more prominent than the Earth 2 Superman from Crisis.
Good for him. Returns didn't give him a lot to work with and he deserves another shot.
In an interview at Comic Con, Routh said the Superman in the crossover is very much in the spirit of the character he played before, so I doubt the Kingdom Come thing is accurate.
This...this was unexpected!
I always felt poor Brandon got the short end of the Superman Returns stick. I'm very happy to see him get another shot. Basically they should go all in on the idea of Routh playing basically the Superman from the Reeve era movies. Not the Returns variation with little Jason White. Just have him be "classic" Superman. The seasoned veteran who fought Lex/Zod/the evil computer and nuclear man in the 70s and 80s. Give him grey temples to make him the "elder statesman" Man of Steel.
I'm sort of hoping Dean Cain and Welling get in on the Clark/Superman action here. Have Welling show up as the blur if you can't convince him to be Superman. Have Dean alongside Teri Hatcher as Lois. Go all out.
Hell I wouldn't be opposed to a cgi cameo by Adam West Batman and George Reeves Superman in a gigantic crowd scene of a hero gathering.

Agreed on Routh, this is very cool! It just made the crossover even more anticipated.
I'd like to see Cain as the "Kingdom Come-esque" Superman...he's the oldest, he's thicker in the midsection like Alex Ross always draws him, and he'd look great with the grey snd the Red/Black S (and, obviously, Teri Hatcher in tow!).
They established in the Smallville comic that Clark changed his suit after a few months, so maybe by now he's changed it again (if he doesn't want to wear the suit). Lots of ways to get his Superman in there without the suit. And Rosenbaum would be as exciting as getting Routh back!
Either way, regardless, Routh playing Superman again in this is plenty awesome even if they don't use the other guys...but here's hoping!
Btw....what's Gerard Christopher doing these days? :)
I’m pretty sure Kevin Spacey won’t be back as Lex Luthor....
But I could be WRONG!

It all depends, man. If there's land to be had, he & Hackman will both come sniffin' around.
Here's hoping he'll be given better material and a better looking suit with a bigger S shield than the on he got in SR.
Here's hoping he'll be given better material and a better looking suit with a bigger S shield than the on he got in SR.
I think it’s been confirmed that he’ll be getting a new suit.
Oh lovely, another Superman to get upstaged by Super-Kara and sing her endless praises.

Oh, so the same stalker-ish, mopey, creepy Superman that we got in Returns?
Yeah, Routh seems like a nice bloke who really got shafted during his career, even on CW, but I'll pass if that's the case.

I suspect you are correct and he is actually going to be playing an older Superman that embodies the role that the Golden Age Superman played in the crisis and it’s follow up stories.
This would likely put him in contrast with the younger Superman who is on the brink of a new life with his wife and son. As much as I don’t like it and think it’s an overused plot point, I fully expect the older Superman to be a widower.
I kind of doubt that they would get anyone else from the movie to appear--although the guy that played the son is probably available (he's been on YOUNG & THE RESTLESS)--and it's mainly because Routh is right there, so how could they pass up the chance to give him one last hurrah as Superman. But from what Brandon has said, it sounds like for him as an actor he'll be closing out the story of the Superman he played on the big screen.
It just shows how much WB is willing to give the CW for this big event. Looking at how they've vetoed so many stories and characters in the past, for them to let the CW use one of their motion picture properties is a big deal. It's one thing if it's Tyler Hoechlin playing an off-brand Superman, but it's quite another thing when it's Brandon Routh himself playing the Man of Tomorrow.
I expect to cry a lot before this event is over. I'm a pretty sentimental guy, unfortunately.
Welling seems a little more amiable to playing Superman these days then he was ten years ago. Part of that was that he got to the point where he hated the character after playing him for 18 hour days. So maybe he could play something like the Batman Beyond version of Superman or something. A super-suit but not THE super-suit. He's got the gray hair for it these days. I doubt that Routh will be playing his Returns version of the character. Or any previous version we've seen before. Either one would work as the "elder statesman" version of the character. But I think physically Welling fits it better. I doubt he'll be playing Superman though. I don't think either one would fit into the Returns suit at this point anyway.
I think Welling is more open to embrace his Superman history because he hasn't really done anything else that is memorable. Smallville is still his biggest gig. He should be grateful, that show got him set for life.
The news that Brandon Routh is back as Superman was SO unexpected honestly. I thought about it, but never thought it'd happen. I just hope the CW write him with respect, but I doubt it (they enjoy putting Superman down to favor Supergirl unfortunately).

Even 10 years ago, Welling did not “hate” Clark. That’s a vast misstatement of anything he’s ever said. He was tired and needed a break after 10 years of living in Vancouver separated from his friends and family but he did not hate the character. If anything, what he’s expressed is that Smallville ending was both necessary but difficult for him and he went through a period of grieving and personal reflection for awhile. Every interview he gave around the time the show was ending was emotional and kind. He did not hate Clark ever. If anything, what we know from the comments of writers and the producers was that he was extremely protective of Clark, often advocating for him and had very strong ideas about who he was and what he believed in by the end. He wasn’t just opinionated about not wearing the suit. He was also opinionated about things that he felt damaged Clark’s character and was very quick to express concern to writers if he felt they were portraying Clark as dishonest or attempting subterfuge.
Erica Durance and Tom Welling were both very involved and vocal about who they believed Lois and Clark were in the final seasons. A lot of the legitimately great stuff between them in the final seasons was because the actors cared so much and spoke up.
Welling is a father now and he’s been through some personal relationships failing in the last decade. He likely ::is:: more soft now towards Superman because he’s a parent and he has grown a lot. Much like Routh, he would likely have made a very convincing Rebirth Superman/father of Jon Kent as he’s a very devoted father much like Routh is. But Tom never hated Clark even in the final days of Smallville.
It’d be pretty interesting to see Smallville’s Lionel Luthor somehow meet Earth 38 Lillian.
I've watched 3 whole episodes of the Arrowverse but I now desperately want to watch this

To be fair to Welling most actors who play one character for a long time especially superheroes usually like to distance themselves from the roles for a period of time afterwards over fears of type casting.

I am pretty sure he will given that the Monitor showed up and did some sort of hand thing at Lex's corpse in the Supergirl season finale.

Would Lillian recognize him though, considering her Lionel was tall, handsome, and bald?
So 'sources' were actually for real sources, it seems.

I'm probably VERY alone in this, but I'm almost hoping he gets a shot at wearing a "Reeve"-like suit - especially since nearly everyone else in the Arrowverse is textures/etc, it'd be neat to see something unique from that.
But regardless, I'm really excited about this!
