I have the same issue.
I believe one way is uploading to and having the image hosted in this site, rather than direct image linking, allows for more than three. (although that makes them smaller seen as thumbnails)
However I think that 4th smilie you are seeing above is in his [The Darknight Detective's] signature, which apparently doesn't count as one.?
Thanks for the help, everyone. I did realize it was in the signature after I posted, but I'm often in error.
As with a few ads I've posted before, you can see how the original plans for the comics changed between when the ads appeared and when the actual comics came out, as regards SUPERMAN No. 199 (August 1967). The Go-Go Checks were still going strong when the Superman-Flash race was first promoted in the Direct Currents.

But by the time the actual comic came out, on June 20th, 1967, the Checks had gone (sadly).

It didn't take long for a rematch, as the Man of Tomorrow and the Sultan of Speed had their next track meet in THE FLASH 175 (December 1967), on sale October 19th, 1967.
Ads like this
and this from 1977
that would appear individually in DC mags* and Marvel comics were all collected together in the SUPERHERO MERCHANDISE CATALOG. I used to get all the issues of this catalog (and multiple copies) in the mail, without asking for it. I seem to have ended up on their mailing list, on account of ordering stuff from DC. The ads were all done by the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art.

I had the opposite experience. I must have ordered those catalogs three or four times and never got even one.
Always had really bad luck ordering stuff as a kid in the 70's. Hardly ever got anything I ordered.

My first DC comics back in '73 were in a Super Pac (which was almost as good as a Comicpac by having 3 comics instead)!
