This week’s issue is so, so, so good.
So we're chatting a bit about it over in the Yana thread, but just curious what people think the intent of Magik's behavior while written under Hickman? Is he trying to make her more "relatable" to the potential new readers the movie will give us? Is he taking Bendis's snarky Magik and turning up the volume? Is he tone deaf to what her core personality is "really" about?
But otherwise, I love this book so much. I just am so very sad any trade paperbacks will have the Glob issues crammed in throwing off the space opera's charm.

I'm definitely getting the sense he drew inspiration from Bendis, but overall I think New Mutants is supposed to be the fun book of the franchise. All of the characters are written pretty goofy/quirky and none of their baggage seems to show up in this post DOX world. We'll probably see the serious Illyana whenever we get the eventual meeting of the Captains issue of X-men.

I agree. I mean we could argue that Karma's "Magical Girl" celebration was off character too.
It is indeed a comedy book and honestly I have no complaints, just fostering discussion.
-
Issue #5 is great! I am glad that Karma was able to also use her telepathic power instead of just her traditional possessive power. We haven't really seen Cypher in using his body language power yet.
-
We've only seen like 2 issues of Hickman's Magik tho

I bet on that

can Karma possess more than one person at once? Have her powers been expanded or redefined at all since the 1980s?
who created her bionic leg? even after the resurrections...?

Yes, she can possess more than one person at once. In fact, she possessed the whole New Mutants team in Zeb Wells' run.

However, subsequent writers dumbed down her power so that other New Mutants members can shine.
Her powers were expanded to include telepathy and other mental powers under Emma's guidance because she always has that potential.
I'm glad that Hickman hasn't forgotten this aspect of her powers in ish #5.
Lawwwd o loooved this mini
Me too! It was my first real exposure to the New Mutants as New Mutants
-
I actually can't stand that mini and am glad it has basically been retconned out of continuity.
