To play Devil's advocate, Johnny's powers come from Cosmic Radiation, generated by a solar flare overcharging the Van Allen radiation belts. So Johnny's are technically derived from the sun too.
Not that it would make much of a difference, mind.
But in the Avatar verse the moon is a fish. They are simply not on the same wavelengths, and Marvel distinguishes between Torch's psuedo science techno babble derived powers, and Zuko's mystical mumbo jumbo derived powers. There's no reason to think that Torch would act like the Avatar sun.

Isn't the fish just a representation of the moon? Not the moon itself.

the fish was the physical manifestation of the moon spirit and thus the moon itself. that why when zhao killed the fish, the moon died with it and thus, the waterbenders lost their powers.
Yeah, I mean, killing the fish essentially plunged the world into darkness as the moon vanished. The moon might also be a moon, but it was also definitely a fish.

Zhao: So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Haven't seen the anime in awhile but wasn't the moon still there, but just lost its mystical properties? It seems the moon is a regular moon but with magic added on top.
In any case, the sun has no magic powers to it. It just seems to be a regular sun.

Not really, it seems to literally disappear from the sky when it gets killed.

like munchy showed, when zhao killed the fish, he killed the moon since the fish was the physical manifestation of the moon.

Sounds good. But in this fight we were talking about the sun, not the moon. Which just seems to be a regular sun.

I don't get what you're arguing here?
That proximity to Torch will make Zuko stronger because... solar radiation?
Bending is magic, one could just as easily argue that Zuko should have reduced powers in the arena because he's not under his own sun.
Like, what do you even want out of this?

the point is that benders have spiritual connections to the moon and the sun. if zuko could be powered up by just being near johnny because he's like a sun, then almost any source of fire would power him up.

Ok, makes sense.
