One more before going to bed... Back in the late 80s I was fortunate enough to discover a few good college radio programs living in the greater Houston area, one was the Funhouse Show, which played a wide variety of underground punk and weirdo experimental music, and it's where I heard this "gem", which definitely made an impression and stuck in my memory for the last 30 years...

This is footage from 1979 for a film that was going to be called All Crazy Now starring The Runaways about an all girl band and their trials and tribulations as they move from Texas to LA. By the time this was filmed the Runaways had broken up but were still by contract obliged to appear and write songs for the movie. So "The Runaways" became Joan Jett and a few actresses. The movie was never completed, but in the early 80's when Joan became a star, someone took the old footage, shot a completely new film around it including lots a shocking sex and violence scenes to make a new wave/punk rock film called DuBeat-e-o.

The Screamers were an early punk rock/new wave band from the West Coast. I'm not an expert, but I do know that their logo was designed by Gary Panter ( Pee Wee's Playhouse) and was appropriated and used everywhere.

The Bus Boys had a pretty big hit with "The Boys Are Back In Town" from the 48hrs starring Eddie Murphy soundtrack. It's a little surprising though that they weren't more popular considering how catchy many of their songs were. Part of me thinks it was just the times and the record company not knowing how to promote them. Around 1980-ish people thought that young black guys playing rock n roll was weird.

Like the above clip, this is from Fridays which was ABC's version of SNL. It's interesting that a cast member holds up a sign stating that the Cats album hasn't been released in the US yet. The show was cancelled in '82 and I think "Built For Speed" came out late that year or early '83. I definitely remember these songs being all over the radio and especially MTV in 1983.
