With things like Guardians of the Galaxy making the transition from Superhero Films to Space Opera, could Space Opera become the new popular subgenre of sci-fi to be the crop for Hollywood?

^^Perhaps. Disney certainly will have Star Wars highly saturated into the pop culture landscape with a new film ('Episodes' and 'Anthology' installments) every year for the next few years, in addition to Guardians of the Galaxy sequels. With Infinity War we'll most likely see all the Marvel heroes enter space opera territory. Meanwhile, Paramount is still trying to crack the Star Trek code. Jupiter Ascending came out earlier this year, and while it was a box office bomb, it was a very expensive old-fashioned space opera.
I always read that some studio is trying to revive either Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers.

Between Disney's Star Wars plans, the Star Trek films, and the coming Babylon 5 reboot? I'd say there's a very good chance that space opera is about to come back in a big way.
This delights me to no end. :D
Everything I just read says this Babylon 5 reboot ain't happening. Is there some other information you have?

I don't know that I'd want a B5 reboot. The effects could be improved, certainly, and maybe even some of the dialogue, but I don't know that the story can be improved.
Its Earth-coup story manages to scare the **** out of me more each time I watch it. Rewatching it currently, and the backdrop of the last four years has me shivering more than ever as I watch people blindly going along while the heroes rage in disbelief at what's happening.
Jupiter Ascending is the most underrated space opera in history.
