Nightmare on Elm Street (reboot?)

I loved this series when it came out. Such an original idea for a character, such a breath of fresh air in terms of storylines, SFX and villain for horror movies in a field that had been dominated by emotionless killers like Jason and Michael Meyers. On the heels of "It" being a box office hit, could this series see new life in this age? They tried rebooting it before, but it fell flat. I didn't see it, so I'm not sure why, but from the marketing it didn't really stoke my imagination -especially since the SFX these days mixed with the potential for dream imagery, and a darkly humorous villain should be able to create an exciting and fun experience. That reboot seemed like it was maybe too serious?

Can/should this franchise come back? I wonder if Elijah Wood wants to play Freddy. My one casting idea though if they want to raise some eyebrows: Johnny Depp! (full circle since he debuted in the first "Nightmare" and he's certainly no stranger to heavy makeup and creating weird, unique characters - it could be his Joker...)

I like Wood, but Wes Craven is the only one who knows how to make these

his efforts would be better utilized elsewhere.

I'd like to see it, if they corrected the mistake of the last attempt and knew that you need [I]some[/I] degree of camp. On the other hand, it'll remain difficult to find someone to fill Englund's glove.

Ummm.... Wes came up with the character, directed 2 of them and wrote (or helped write) 3 of them, but I'll contend that Wes actually gave us the weakest films of the franchise. The first was great for it's time, but it's dated horribly. He wrote a treatment for Dream Warriors, but his script was rewritten by several other writers. And then he gave us New Nightmare, which was a shit show.

Then again, he DIDN'T give us Freddy's Revenge, so maybe not the weakest of the series...

I heard a rumor that they originally wanted Kevin Bacon to play Freddy in the remake. That could be interesting...

And yeah, Kevin Bacon has always been Robert Englund's personal choice for the part. He's pointed out again that's who he would like in light of new remake rumors.

Oh god, they will never stop with the remakes/reboots...

The "classic" movies satisfy my 80s fetish and I hold them dear but I also would rather have new icons like Marvel's Morbius or Nightmare.

Let him try I say. He's a huge horror fan and his production company has actually been putting out some quite good work. Also it can't be any worse than that last film.

of course it can be. the last remake played it very safe. they just removed a lot of the (superior) practical effects and changed the acting roster. the concept was still the same. but what if they changed the actual concept of Nightmare on Elm Street like they did Child's Play?

not sure where to go with the storylines at this point. other than having "inventive" new murder scenarios, what's to get into besides attacking teens (many of whom may be sexually active)? the cover-up by the parents who killed him, etc., we've seen that.

Potentially, there's a whole dreamworld and maybe other denizens of Nightmares. I mean, those kids' parents burned Freddy to death so he comes back to kill their kids in their dreams.... and that just makes sense to everyone? I mean, this is just off the top of my head since you ask but perhaps there's some room to develop a mythos around how he came back, (did any of the films do this? I'm not sure I've seen them all) are there others like him haunting other people? etc... (tie it into the imaginary friends of "Drop Dead Fred" if you want to get really freaky...;))

Something was pointed out on a podcast I listen to recently, and I think it's relevant here. These remakes really aren't made for us. They are made for a new generation that either doesn't like to or doesn't want to go back and watch the originals. So remaking the movies, telling the same story again and again, while annoying to us is really meant to bring in new fans that had never seen or never even heard of these characters before.

And probably also where the SFX and writing just come across as lame to the new generation. Nothing becomes dated more quickly than anything with teens.

I feel that [I]Halloween 2018 [/I]already showed that you don't have to reinvent the wheel with the premise. You just have to update it in a way that both old and new fans can get behind.

Also his remake of [I]Maniac[/I] was awesome. As was [I]Mandy[/I], which was produced through his production company.

sure. but a lot uglier. we're talking about a burn victim here. i just think that gender isn't really a big deal when talking about a dream based killer. Freddy appeared in female form more than once. he was really about lewd sexuality and making people uncomfortable; kind of like Bugs Bunny. plus, his weapon of choice is basically long fingernails.

Also he's never been a super-big or physically imposing either, so that's not an issue either.

.. also with the joking aspect, "R-rated evil stand-up comic" Freddy, that's become something of a trope to the point of self-parody at this point. If there is a next one, maybe de-emphasize jokes, and make "krueger" more of an abstract monster/wraith, less about having a specific humanoid form..

and if the next one is to "set up" yet another movie, maybe make this an ongoing mystery with a semi-fixed group of people trying to solve it, rather than a completely new set of disposable teens who encounter this monster back-to-back with little or nothing done to educate one another on combating, etc...

I would love a straight faced horror freddy. But the remake tried that too, and people actually complained about it being "too dark" lol.

You take away the dark humor and you have 'It.'

Freddy was also a lot less comedic in the original film, and what humor he did have was for more dark and unnerving. And it worked. Remake Freddy was just, boring, that was the problem.

Agreed. Robert Englund is Freddy Krueger. It's like making a Star Trek movie with someone other than William Shatner as Kirk or a Sergeant Bilko movie with someone other than Phil Silvers. You just get someone playing a role
instead of what made the character interesting in the first place.

In addition to that being an issue, it is just a franchise that is in a corner when it comes to that particular aspect of the story.

On paper, a Freddy Krueger who is dead should never have aged a single day over the entire course of the franchise.

All of that being before you even get to how far you can take the series without some particularly inventive writing.

Robert Englund had a decent idea for a Freddy sequel/reboot.
