Manga Collected Editions
Welcome to the Manga Collected Editions thread! I've wanted to make this for a while and I'd love to help anyone get hooked on manga. I don't really have much to else say but I will try my best to keep this thread going and update it with more info. Any and all criticism is welcome (I really could use the help and advice). I will be post about new licenses as they come (with extra links about each series). I also will try to add the Japanese Publishers each Publisher is able to license from (eventually I want to add the individual magazines each Publisher tends to License from).
Rules:
1. Discussion of ongoing series: As this is a Collected Edition thread, try to keep detailed discussion of the weekly & monthly releases of series to a minimum. The New Manga/Anime Lounge Thread (http://community.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?3902-The-New-Manga-Anime-Lounge) would be a better place for that.

If you don't find a series listed there check baka-updates (http://mangaupdates.com). (Google the name of the series + baka updates and the series listing should be the first link you see).

Was waiting for a thread like this to pop up.
-
So should we begin by not listing the big 3/or so of Shounen? How about manga that hits the double digits but doesn't go past 40?
-
finally someone since I couldn't muster up the energy for it. Cheers!
Also, I think it would be nice to have recommendations for manga newbies, essential readings and what's the current state of their english translations.

I'm currently reading this and it's very good. I need vol 2. soon.

VIZ introduction:
The Perfect Edition
Everyone faces uncertainty at some point in their lives. Even a brilliant surgeon like Kenzo Tenma is no exception. But there’s no way he could have known that his decision to stop chasing professional success and instead concentrate on his oath to save peoples’ lives would result in the birth of an abomination. The questions of good and evil now take on a terrifyingly real dimension.
Years later, in Germany during the tumultuous post-reunification period, middle-aged childless couples are being killed one after another. The serial killer’s identity is known. The reasons why he kills are not. Dr. Tenma sets out on a journey to find the killer’s twin sister, who may hold some clues to solving the enigma of the “Monster.”
Just ordered the HC complete editions of Gyo and Uzumaki from Junji Ito! I saw some pictures of them the other day and they look like really nice collections. Only read a few short stories from Ito so I'm excited for these.

My favorite anime of all the time, but I have no doubt the manga is as good if not better. Urasawa is a manga god.

I just got them as well, only a couple chapters into Uzumaki and I love it (I find it funny more than creepy, so maybe that says a lot about me).

Depends, Bleach tanked after Aizen was defeated but I feel up until then it is worth reading, and I've loved all of One Piece and the 700 or so chapters of Case Closed I've read (I haven't purchased the volumes yet, because I hate the Americanized versions of the character names).

I'll do this but I'll need some input from others. A lot of series I loved or started with like the Shounen Jump Big 3, I wouldn't recommend as starting points. Some others like Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin I've only watched or haven't read since I was a kid.
-
Negima is a personal favorite of mine and like One piece, Naruto, Fairy Tail, and Bleach (I think), its gotten the 3-in-1 collection right now.
-
You should read Slam Dunk. It's a great basketball manga and it's very funny too. The main character is an idiot who doesn't know anything about basketball, but learns along the way and teaches us in the process and he has an imaginary feud with the best player in the team.

Great thread. I would like to know more about "oversized" manga collections.
So far I have the Naussica 2 volume oversize slip case (I got a great deal for 35- new).
I am also getting the Gundam Origins books, so far I have books 1 and 2.
I would love to know what other oversized collections are out there.
I am also currently reading Mushishi, one of my favorites, but I only have it digital. I recently sold my physical volumes when I found out that volumes 6-8 are basically un-findable for less than 80 bucks each.
-
Great idea! Too bad I buy most of my mangas in Spanish...
I'm currently buying Prison School (I know, I know... :D ), Naruto (still unfinished in Spain), and the awesome Billy Bat. Other than that, I get short mangas like Satoshi Kon's body work or anthology volumes. I buy too many comics to afford more ongoing stories.

I did not know..... now I can never unsee some of those things from the Google Image Search. If they ever release this in any form of hardcover I may have to pick up a copy to go along side Highschool of the Dead as my "look at the weird **** the japanese publish" books.
Personally I've never really read Manga but I've blown through the first two hardcover volumes of Gundam Origins , they've been absolutely brilliant so far.

I own Uzumaki and I have to say the art is incredible, but the story isn't scary at all. It's just weird.

Don't if this qualifies as oversized, but the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure hardcovers VIZ has been putting out are really well built and well designed.
-
Just got the new Planetes omnibus vol 1.
The binding isn't that bad for a 500+ manga, but I feel that the slightest tug could wreck it.
I'm enjoying the idea of space garabage collectors. I was expecting a manga that just delved into what it was like to be garabage collector in space--and it does to an extent--but it sidetracks that and delves into the personal lives of the garabage astronauts, the world around the and the people they interact with.

Prison School is probably in my top 3 Comedy series. I really love it and I was so glad Yen Press did larger 2-in-1s for it.

Are you only interested in oversized collections that are also hardcovers? The OHCs I'd recommend that I own are Vinland Saga (https://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=1568) and A Bride's Story (https://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=37308).
If it's just oversized Ubel Blatt (https://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=2291) is one I enjoy.

Drawn & Quarterly publishes quite a lot of manga as well.
-
PictureBox used too to.
I highly recommend the ten cents/alt mangas that PictureBox published.
ALSO ALSO ALSO!!!!
I am a Hero, Goodnight Punpun, A Girl on the Shore, & Otherworld Barbara are going to published in English.
-
I almost mentioned PictureBox but that's dead now (coincidentally ordered Yokoyama's Garden a while ago).
I think there might be a chance of Fantagraphics re-printing their stuff or at least some of PB's catalog since they're going to publish C.F.'s Powr Mastrs and Nadel's working at The Journal.
-
I didn't know that.
I think it would be wonderful if Fanta re-printed some of Powr Mastr; they're great comics that shouldn't be OOP
-
Book 4 and the reprint of book 1 are scheduled for March/April.
Getting a bit off-topic here.

Can you tell if any of the manga they have published is missing from this list?(https://www.mangaupdates.com/publishers.html?id=388).
I guess I add a section with the smaller publishers. I just wasn't sure if using space in the main post for ones that don't publish a decent number of titles made sense. Some like One Peace books and Udon only have 2 or 3 books at the moment (That I'm aware of).

Great recommendations, I think I will definitely check out Vinland Saga.
I just am looking for sort of collections, oversized or not, hardcover or not. I prefer not to buy individual books if possible, also SUPER long running series I would prefer digitally I guess, I don't really have room for 30+ volumes of Berserk or anything.
Similarly how I collect comics in OHC/Omni/Absolute etc I would like Manga that falls into the same kind of category/presentation.
-
Not read much manga, the first few issues if Battle Royal and the odd book here and there, would be interested in some recommendations.

It seems Lone Wolf And Cub omnibus volume 3 has gone from amazon, speedyhen, wordery etc. Have I missed out just as I've started to get in to it or will it be replenished?
The first two have been equalled all my favourite books in story and art so far.

New manga Tuesday. Trying out Animal Land for the author (Makoto Raiku did Zatch Bell) and Die Wergelder for the art (Hiroaki Samura). Might give Blade of the Immortal I try if I really like Die.

Its still in stock on us amazon, B&N and others, so I'd say just wait for a restock or pick an amazon seller that has a decent price.

Did you like Battle Royal and what were some of those odd books? Bakuman, Full Metal Alchemist, Vinland Saga, and Death Note (Black Edition, cheap slightly larger 2-in-1s) are all really great.
-
It's gone on amazon and the only sellers that have it are from the US, I'm in the UK. Are these things kept in print generally? I'll continue without volume 3 if I have to but what a kick in the shin that'd be lol

I'm not really sure how Dark Horse does with keeping manga in print. Is the 3rd option on this list overpriced? It ships from the UK.http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/161655200X/ref=olp_f_new?ie=UTF8&f_new=true&qid=1451447956&sr=8-6

if you only want it from the UK, one UK seller at abebooks.co.uk has a couple of copies (allegedly new) but the price is about 16 quid, i'm not sure if that's reasonable. if you decide on it anyway, here's a 10% off voucher - E99KH5 (saves up to £10, expires tomorrow). not much, but better than nothing i guess.
-
Cheers guys. I got the first two for about a tenner so I'll wait another couple of days and see what happens. I can't go spending an extra £6-8 on each volume when there's going to be about 14 in total ha ha

i hear you :)
by the way, i know it's not the UK, but all ten volumes of it are available on TFAW for 11.99 bucks (except for 9 and 10, which are 17.99), and there are also nick & dent copies of volumes 3 and 5 there for 9.99.

I just finished reading Akira. For Manga fans or even fans of Sci fi this is a must read. The set up is incredible and the last 2 volumes are seriously non stop action, I've never read anything like it.
Even if you have seen the anime you really have to read these books I can't recommend them highly enough.
