The Mandalorian
Man, I'd say this show alone was worth the price of admission for Disney+ that was an utterly fantastic first episode. With out spoiling it, with the reveal of just what the bounty was on at the end I'm hoping the rest of the series will sort of play off of Lone Wolf and Cub which would definitely fit in with the spaghetti western feel the show has going for it.
My only real gripe comes down to just how dark a couple of the scenes were, not tonally mind you but literally. I don' t know if those few interior scenes were just shot with low light and that's how they were supposed to look similar to the night episodes in the last season of Game of Thrones or if its an issue with my tv. I have a pretty good samsung tv and have never had an issue with brightness or contrast with anything else in the past but I've never changed the settings from where they were out of the box so perhaps this is a case where settings are important. Anyone else have that issue?
-
A-
-Some FX work is off
-Some dialogue doesn't totally work
-Overacting in some scenes
Overall it's worth the price of admission or the free trial. It's a great start for Disney+
-
Is it weird that I liked that some of the VFX wasn't perfect? It made it feel throwback in all the best ways.
Fantastic episode though.

I absolutely loved the first episode of this. The costuming and set direction are perfect for the universe, and easily capture that lived in feeling of the original trilogy. The main character has a great look, is clearly a badass, and I was impressed how much Pascal was able to bring to the role with just the small amount of lines here. He manages to give a bit of character without a whole lot to work with.
Hints at the backstory, world building possibilities galore and largely solid FX (I only really noticed one legit poor scene, and there were several excellent FX shots). As hyped as I was for this, it lived up to it in spades. And I genuinely don't know what to make of that ending. I really hope the rest of the series can maintain this level of quality.
-
What fx shots looked bad to you guys? I can't say I noticed anything.

The one I mentioned catching in my post is the last shot of the Blurg (spelling? I have no idea) ride. The Mando and Nick Nolte's guide alien ride away from the camera into a setting sun. And the cg, in just this one shot, is terrible. Pre-Phantom Menace terrible. It was the one shot in the entire episode that stood out as just poorly done to me. I didn't have any problems with any of the rest of the FX.
-
We look forward watching it one day too!
I'm glad the first episode was good!
Does anyone think this will ever be released to DVD/Blu-Ray?
Or is Disney going to stop allowing physical media be sold since they have a streaming service now?
-
I didn't realize this show was going to have a [spoil]Lone Wolf and Cub[/spoil] set up. I love that kind of ####!

Herzog did say he gave purpose to the lead so I'm guessing it's definitely going to be a play on Lone Wolf. The Mandolorian won't be able to complete the bounty so he'll be hunted by everyone else in the Galaxy until he finds out what to do with the package.

-- I thought the carbonite scene was lacking - minor quibble, but a bunch of gas then encased? Again, a small deal, but it took me out of it a bit.
-- I kept hearing Jeffrey Combs' voice. Are we sure this isn't a Darth Vader situation where one guy wears the suit, another guy does the voice??
-- I thought the M and the IG robot had great chemistry. I really thought they were going to be buddies...

No, actually. Though it was definitely Pedro Pascal doing the voice.

There were scenes in the trailer with a IG droid that weren't in this episode so I'm guessing we'll see another or maybe he repairs this one.

I haven't seen the show yet but I think that was the purpose of Carbonite in Bespin. As Han notes, Cloud City was a "Tibanna gas mine".

That's how it's always worked.

I was 99% joking. I am not very familiar with his voice, but he definitely sounds like Combs to me. :)

But they had to construct a whole chamber - it just made it seem more of an impressive procedure. We couldn't see what actually happened when Han was lowered. Again, it was a minor quibble.

Well, the Bespin carbon freezing facility was industrial grade, and made to capture the gaseous tibanna mined there for transport. It makes sense that it would involve some sort of flash freeze, especially since tibanna has typically been associated with blasters and other energy weapons in the expanded universe and is therefor understood to be potentially volatile. This unit was presumably designed for the express purpose we see it put to here, and as such wouldn't need to be anywhere near as large. And, even when Luke escapes Vader's trap, the effect used is the same, with the spray of gas.

I enjoyed the western motifs in songs and theme.
I loved the look and feel of how everything felt lived in.
I liked the world building and references from new monies and even Life Day.
-
Was the client wearing some kind of Imperial medal? It would explain some things if here were former Empire.
I'm guessing "Foundling" = orphan?
I don't recall anyone referring to the "backpipe" before - was this the first toilet we've seen in this universe?
I'm sure there are a million references and easter eggs that are totally going over my head (Afterbuzz did reveal that the "Life Day" thing the bounty referenced was from the old "Star Wars Christmas Special"!)
Overall great start to the show!!
-
Not a big Star Wars fan but really enjoyed the first episode.
Couple questions for the Experts.
When does this take place? From context clues I'd say shortly after episode 6 since they say the Empire is done but there are still remnants. But Iono
Yodas race, are they suppose to be rare or nearly extinct?
What is a Signet? Sounds like a family Crest or House Banner. For Mandalorians does each individual get theyre own that they have to earn or how does that work within their culture. If any of this is new stuff they havent covered in previous star wars Lore I apologize.
Anyway enjoyed it alot, love how there is even this video game leveling up vibe to It. I assume as the show goes on he will earn more Of that Steel and his armor will keep getting upgraded. The Alien design were really impressive, especially for a TV show. Score was great aswell.

From what I recall reading, it's supposed to be 5 or 6 years after Return of the Jedi, yes.
We've only ever seen two of them before. Yoda and another Jedi. So yeah, rare. Really, really rare. So far anyway.
The sigil stuff appears to be new. Love that we're getting more Mando lore.
-
Damn if they only had shoot outs like that in the movies. Only in SWS do you have bar doors that kill lol.
-
This was cool. A Star Wars western.
-
Okay...
1. John Favreau and Filoni should make the next Star Wars movies. It's a much better choice than D&D and Rian Johnson. This Star Wars show was so good poor Rise Of The Skywalker will fail to clear the high bar this show sets. :(
2. Brace yourself, the "I have spoken" memes are coming.
3. I...don't really want to know more about Yoda's race. I'm still trying to forget Yadda.

Ok thanks for the info.

There's actually a female Yoda, Yaddle briefly seen on the council in The Phantom Menace (Strangely, she doesn't show up at the Naboo celebration at the end of the film with the rest, but given how the Yoda puppet looked, maybe that's for the best).
She didn't show up in the later prequels though.
Even in the old EU, his species seemed mainly limited to the Knights of the Old Republic games. Some have speculated that Yoda's species are the Whills, the mysterious chroniclers of Star Wars lore.

Perhaps someone more versed in the lore knows, but the way the guy in the bar used the term, are we to pick up that "Mando" is a really disrespectful derogatory term?

Yeah, I'm cool with Yoda being the only one, but I'm willing to trust the creative team.

The space western aspect has always been baked into the franchise. You see it with the the outlaw character type characters such as Han, Boba Fett or Cad Bane (from The Clone Wars).
The Mandalorian is a show that just dials it up to 11 like how the Prequels/Clone Wars emphasized the Jedi aspects of the franchise or how Rogue One emphasized the Rebel aspect. In many ways because of that, it feels more ambitious than the Sequel Trilogy in what it attempts to do.

Everything after TFA has been ambitious from Disney, IMHO. Some of it has been a homer, some of it fizzled.

I certainly hope they plan on putting it out on DVD or BluRay since I have no intention of subscribing to a streaming service just for one show. I know that DCU is putting theirs out on DVDs. I just bought the first season of Titans last week.

There were apparently 42 Star Wars curse words in the first episode, a new record.
Also, new episode this Friday and every Friday after that.

My husband and I watched the first episode during dinner last night and loved it!
No political message or agendas.
Just a good, interesting story. We can't wait to see the next episode!
And I definitely want it on Blu-Ray too!

Yes, I saw that and still have to grab Titans S1. Also need to get Krypton S1 and S2 in January.
Well, I did the free week of D+ and we like the show enough, plus my husband and I saw several movies we want to watch, so I'm sticking around until the Mandalorian is done at least.

Baring any SNAFUs, the final episode is slated to release end of December.

I love how meme worthy this has become already.
Though it actually is a swear, I think. Sebulba uses it during the pod race scene in Phantom Menace, and it sure didn't sound friendly.

seeing cute cgi yoda baby after this cool, gritty tour de force felt kinda weird. so i am not in the lone wolf and cub club yet.
damn these tough guys have a weak spot with these brats

watched it on the phone so i might not have got all the details.
also it felt weird that the mandalorian was ripped of by carl weathers (can only pay half?) and then take the next job from him.
the trade federation should have considered buying some IG droids...
jabba´s creature (species) being roasted and another one watching got me the most though. i will never rewatch ROTJ and not think of it...
+first toilet in star wars. 40 years of mystery solved. i kid you not, i thought about that back in the day!

The Magnaguards used be General Greivous actually are IG droids. Specifically they're IG-100 models. The Banking Clan also made usage of IG-Lancer droids which got used as scouts and cavalry.

really? the magnaguards look nothing like the IG droids. what is a cavalry droid?
