The tv show never had to worry about any team member's solo series though. And while it was fun for a tv show, in a comic it could end up just feeling like an anthology book. I think in a cartoon you could get away with it more than a comic where you want to be able to follow a specific set of characters.
Adding to my comment, the cartoon had the benefit of also being on once a week - and for free. If there's an episode featuring characters you don't like, no biggie - you spent no money and just wait a week until the next ep. Waiting another month then paying for a chance to see a character you like, on the other hand...

Would it be legal for a group to have a satellite above the earth? I mean there are regulations that cover flying drones so I’d figure a satellite would be in issue for world governments. Maybe that was addressed in the original stories and I just don’t know because it’s before my time. Just seems if you don’t bring “real world” into the premise, the stories end up lacking depth.
The tv show was very episodic and had some stand alone arcs with different characters teaming up iirc. It's been a while since I seen it.
The two JL toon seasons were highly episodic. However, the JLU seasons each built arcs that concluded with the season's end.The first teased a couple of episodes in, but the second was on display from episode one.

I’m actually glad that not everything has to be bound to hard reality.
Otherwise, we’d have no powers, vampires, aliens, mutants, reliable magic or advanced AI.
I'd recommend checking out All-Star Squadron by Roy Thomas.
A huge cast, much larger than the Satellite-era League, with relationships developing among the core members.
Where JLU's core cast was Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Martian Manhunter, John Stewart and Hawkgirl, All-Star Squadron's core was made up of mainly Commander Steel, Firebrand, Liberty Belle, Johnny Quick and Robotman.
What about the featured villains? Which ones are there?

Sorry, I meant for Roy Thomas' story. Which villains did he use?

Thomas was at a bit of a handicap because supervillains had a tendency to be a bit sparse back in 1942. Heroes normally beat up on more ordinary gangsters and the like in those days. His roster of WW2 originals included:

The Ultra-Humanite (probably his Number 1 Big Bad)
Oom
Mister Mind
Mister Who
Kulak
Fairy Tales Fenton
Wotan
Ian Karkull
Lightning Master
Dr. Droog
Brainwave (the story treated BW's scheme in such a way that it didn't contradict his first [later] appearance)
Tarantula (not John Law, the other one)
Alexander The Great
Catwoman
Sieure Satan
The Dummy
He also incorporated some villains that were created after the Golden Age, but retroactively set in the WW2 era:

Baron Blitzkreig (the other contender for Number 1 Big Bad)
Kung
Thomas employed time-travel stories to import some baddies that wouldn't show up until later in the Golden Age:

Per Degaton
Solomon Grundy
Professor Zodiak
King Bee
The Monster (no kidding; that's it)
Finally, Thomas created a few villains just for the series:

Deathbolt
Zyklon
Nuclear, The Magnetic Man
Kukulkan
The Dragon King
Tsunami
I'm sure that I've overlooked a lot, but it was a respectable line-up for what Thomas had to work with.

This would be my founding team choice for a new Satellite League.
