I reread Zdarsky and Brubaker's runs recently. Brubaker's was good till the the Hand pops up. Although Lady Bullseye was cool.
See, I thought the arc where Mr. Fear returned was the lowpoint for that run. It just ran far too long and almost just seemed like emotional torture porn for poor Matt. For me, it picked back up with that arc involving Big Ben Donovan.

I bought the omnibus collections so it's not a long read to me. But I could see that angle.

I mean, I generally prefer an emotionally tormented Matt, but man, that was a lot even for me.
Devil’s Reign 2 was quite disappointing. Aside from Ben’s part which was was quite well done, it did not carry the momentum from the previous issue. I think someone commented somewhere that this was more like issue 1.5. No wonder they shipped it the same month as issue 1. Not much happened to advance the overall story. A particular scene that didn’t really work was Tony seeming to take offense at everyone proposing Luke run for mayor was very odd. I wouldn’t think Tony would care and would even join in the support considering Luke’s speech in issue one was well received. Very uncharacteristic of Tony and I’m not quite sure I’m interested in where that may be going. I’m sure there will be more to that but it feels like needless conflict if anything. Otherwise the art absolutely carried this issue. And other Elektra vs Kraven, I couldn’t care less about any of the tie-ins else this issue sets up. The Doc Ocks stuff at the end is just ridiculous. What happened with Kingpin and Purple Man was also kind of disappointing but fine. Hopefully and I would expect the next issue to actually advance the story and give much more page time to DD. This event is supposed to be substituting his ongoing after all.
What was it you didn't like in Bendis's run? Was it the dialogue? I quite like it but it's not my favourite run. Frank Miller comes first.
I would definitely say start with Frank Miller's run and his second mini-run "Born Again" with David Mazzucchelli. Those are great starting points to see the evolution of Matt's and Fisk's relationship as well as Elektra and The Hand. They say that Bendis followed suit after Miller's run, that his run wouldn't have happened if not for Miller but I would say they differ in many ways. Frank Miller's run was groundbreaking at the time and still reads really well today. If you can, definitely read the Frank Miller issues. Brubaker's run following Bendis is quite good although I have certain reservations. I would say it's quite similar in style to Zdarsky in certain ways.
My second favourite run after Miller is Soule's run which takes place before the current Zdarsky run and well worth reading.
Btw, if you have Daredevil (1998) #9 with Echo's first appearance, that comic should be worth quite a bit now ;)
Glad to know someone else really likes Soule’s run! I’ve come to realize it’s woefully under-appreciated.
I didn't think of that. I thought they were just ominously appearing in the background.
Yea this was my take away from that scene, too. Luke was convincing enough that I didn’t think the kids were being manipulated.

You put it perfectly.

I think we're a couple of the biggest advocates of Soule's run. As I've said before, my only real qualms with Soule's run was the last arc and some of the fill-in artists.

Yeah, the Doc Ock stuff was just eye rolling. Not what I wanted to see.

It is very under appreciated. I quite enjoyed it. To me, it holds its own against the pantheon of Daredevil writers and artists.
After recently receiving the Charles Soule Omnibus, I thought I'd post a few pics of my Daredevil Collected Editions. Once the Daredevil Dead Man's Hands Epic Collection TPB arrives, it will slot in after the Last Rites Epic Collection:

Yesterday, my wife and I finally took the kids to see Spider-Man: No Way Home. Probably my favourite of the Tom Holland Spidey movies and possibly my 3rd favourite Spidey movie. Spider-Man is number two and my favourite is Spider-Man 2 - a true masterpiece [SPOIL] Great little scene with Matt. I was really hoping for more but this is such a positive step in getting Charlie Cox's Daredevil into the MCU. Btw, apparently Vincent D'Onofrio stated that his Fisk from DD is the same as the one in Hawkeye. I wonder how this will all play out? [/SPOIL]

My own little theory(s):
[SPOIL]Fisk clearly survived the snap if he was running the Trenchcoat Draculas while Barton was the Ronin. The first question that comes to mind is after the finale of season 3 of the Netflix show, why did Fisk return to crime after saying he wouldn't so long as Matt wouldn't come after Vanessa for ordering Agent Nadeem's death? The most likely answer is she died, either before the snap or some time after the snap. Karen even mentioned that that was a concern of hers in the finale as well. I suspect the snap and then the sudden return of half the world's population (including his criminal rivals) contributed to his having to fight his way back to the top of the criminal underworld. And TBH, a lot of my favorite Kingpin stories usually involve him fighting his way back to the top. Stories where he has to actually get his hands dirty and use his criminal cunning are generally more interesting stories than him simply ordering his underlings around.
The second is why now does he seem to be a superhuman, displaying superhuman strength and resistance to injury? The latter can be explained by the body armor he wore in the Netflix series. He primarily wore it in the lining of his jackets, but after the fight with Bullseye where Bullseye drew a lot of blood from him after Fisk gave his jacket to Vanessa for protection, he smartened up and now wears it beneath his shirts. As for the former...I doubt we'll get any real explanation of his new found strength other than they're really beginning to lean into his strength levels in the comics, where they might as well be superhuman. I mean, other that super senses, resurrected ninjas, and what might as well be superhuman aiming abilities, the show tried to be mostly realistic with the notable exception that Matt never seems to get tired parkouring all over the city. I suspect the next time we see Matt in the suit (probably a return of some sort of variation of the red one we saw on the Netflix show rather than the black one), he'll be swinging around in a much more fantastical way around NYC more akin to Spider-Man than what we have previously seen.[/SPOIL]
