Unpopular opinions
We have opinions on everything and everyone. Some of those line up with everyone else's, while there are those that differ greatly. However, a lot of the time we feel that we are not allowed to express those thoughts for fear of rejection and/or ridicule. But here, we can say whatever we want.
Unpopular opinion: The Boys was a terrible comic. Full of bad writing and awful characterizations. Also, Empyre was pretty boring.
-
Ive said this before and I will say it again. I bring it up today because my dad has been watching this movie like crazy the last three days. Christopher Reeves Superman was one of the most boring movies I have ever seen and it is way over hyped. I am going nuts because every time I go to my dads room to help him out of his chair, or bring him dinner or meds he has been watching this movie.
I agree with you on the Boys. Edgy for the sake of being edgy with out any real substance.

It wasn't when it was made. Context matters.

The Sega Genesis had a better game lineup than the Super Nintendo. It's also the better console of the two.
Fighting games need some variety again. The 90s had plenty of bad games but there were also unique ones like Fighter's Destiny, Bushido Blade, and Elan Doree.
The people who say Sonic was never good are usually the same ones who sucked at playing Sonic and never got over it.
The line between an unpopular opinion and a hot take is a thin one.

I wasnt alive when it came out. I am sure it may have been great back then. but even today I hear people who were not alive when it came out saying how great it is. I just dont get it. I dont care how great people thought it was when it came out. For me today it is boring as Hell. If people like it more power to them. Just dont get the hype.

I already was well into my adult years when Superman debuted in 1978, so I have a different attitude about it. When it was made, the very concept of a big-budget movie based on a comic book was hard to fathom. "Superman??? The guy who flies around with his underwear on the outside, they're making a movie about that??? I used to watch the TV show, back in the 50s, and it was strictly for kids! I can't imagine that anyone over the age of ten would go to see a movie about Superman. Those folks paying all that money to make that movie must be crazy!!!" Then the movie came out, people were stunned by the spectacle, and they were floored that Christopher Reeve played the title character like an actual leaning man, not a cardboard cutout. So yeah, it basically has to do with the expectations of the day. Had that movie been as big a turkey as most people thought it surely would be, then the whole modern movie industry would now likely be quite different.

That's interesting to hear that people thought Superman the movie would fail. I thought he was still popular back then. Even as a kid Superman was one of the few superheroes that people around me didn't immediately crap on. There were jokes much like with Batman but that was more due to the X-Men and Spider-Man being more popular at the time. This was in the early 90s.

Superman was certainly a part of popular culture, but the whole concept of superheroes in general was considered to be "kid stuff". It was hard to believe that there would be a big-budget movie about Superman that would appeal to adults.

I wouldn't go that far, but imo, his Clark Kent was almost the opposite of what Clark should be, imo.

I wasn't alive when it came out, but I grew up watching it. It wasn't until 1989 that we got anything close to what Superman The Movie did. It was an important movie. It definitely isn't overhyped for what it was at it's time.
-
Being the first big scene Superhero movie is great. it did make it possible for other superhero movies. I will respect it for that. It was not overhyped back then. i get that. But people who go on today about how it is one of the most enjoyable superhero movies is overhype for today. But that does not change the fact that it is boring.
I get back then it was enjoyable for people. It will always have a spot and well deserved spot for kicking off the super hero movie craze. But as an enjoyable movie it does not hold up like many other great movies from decades ago.
-
Most wince inducing scene in the first Superman movie...when random black dude dressed like a TV pimp walks up to Chris Reeves and says, "Damn, Jim! That suit is fly!!"

I am all in for your opinions...so they are not unpopular anymore
Nintendo fans just couldn't accept that Sonic were way cooler than their mascot.

I think the controversial and universal hated clone saga is one of the best Spider-Man saga ever. When in my country the comic publications stopped, and we were about two years behind the American publications, I stepped foot in a comic book shop and bought ALL of the Spider-man and spidey related books at once. About 200-300 books in englisch. And it was the time of the clone saga. I read them in a month or so and was flashed about so much happening, so many twists and turns, surprises here and there. I think my heart stopped once or twice while reading...great times.
-
The only good Thor movie is the first one.
-
Jack Kirby is vastly overrated, and just about everyone he draws looks like a doughy caveman.
-
Superman fans are ridiculously insecure about other characters being more potentially more powerful or popular than him.
What's So Funny About Truth, Justice and The American Way is a morally confused story in which Superman beats up a team of racial and foreign caricatures and fails to actually make a convincing argument for the point it's in favor of.
While manga is doing much better than American comics, it still has just as many if not more problems when it comes to women and racial minorities.
Superhero fans have some weird ideas of morality when it comes to lethal force and relationships. No, Superman does not belong to the world and him marrying Lois is not being selfish.

Wow. You are a more patient person than I am. The minute they revealed Peter was a clone I laughed and just ignored the comic from that point on till JMS came on when I was in high school. That, the first Spider-Man film, and Ultimate Spider-Man got me back into the character for a time.
I never finished reading the Clone Saga but I found out how it ended from the old The Life of Reily blog.
Ben Reily and Kaine were the best things about the Clone Saga and they got too much hate.

I have to agree with this. I really loved the Clone Saga. It was one of my favorite story lines. Glad to see I am not alone. We should start a support group and help others who feel like us come out of hiding.
Jack Kirby is vastly overrated, and just about everyone he draws looks like a doughy caveman.
I don't think people give Kirby credit for his figure work. It's literally everything else.
-
On Kirby, I first encountered him as an 8-year-old in an old collection of Fantastic Four comics at my school library. I can't speak to his technical skill (still not a good judge of that, generally just know what I like when I see it), but I'll say as a kid the way he drew motion/movement and emphasized big moments and facial expressions grabbed my attention in a way comics I would buy individually at local gas stations/grocery stores didn't. And considering I was the age group he was drawing for (young kids), maybe that's what he was going for. Also, many of the folks we grew up loving grew up loving his work. Also also, think of everything he helped create and try to imagine the comics world (or Hollywood, for that matter) without him. Bold stance, I know, defending Jack Kirby.
-
If you look at the early work of Pablo Picasso and Jack Kirby, you can see that they were both very skilled artists who had learned the basic rules of drawing. Becoming a great artist is breaking those rules.

Honestly guys, you don't have to try to convert me. I knew my opinion most not popular when I posted it. That's why I posted it in the Unpopular Opinions thread. ;)
But you can proselytize till you're blue in the face. No matter how much you sing Kirby's virtues, or lecture on his influence on the medium, you cannot change what I see when I look at Kirby: which is visually unappealing artwork.
Just accept that some of us don't drink the Kirby kool-aid.
-
I hate it when women are called girls and men are called boys. To me, that's the equivalent of calling a 20-year-old cat a kitten and a 20-year-old dog a puppy.

You see this is the problem. I can accept that you don't care for Kirby's art. But this kind of statement discredits him as one of the top creative forces in comics history. You can personally not like his style, but you are saying the rest of us are delusional to hold him in such high regard.
The truth is he was underrated when he died and reality has caught up with his genius.

No. I am not saying you are delusional. But, in my experience, Kirby seems to have a following whose devotion borders on the cult-like. Any attempt to criticize any aspect of his work is meet with a barrage of vehement defence, telling the critic why they are wrong.
Surely if Kirby's genius is so obvious and undeniable, my single dissenting voice cannot harm his reputation. So why, on a thread called Unpopular Opinions, feel to need to tell me why I am wrong, and why Kirby is identical to Picasso?
-
I to start this by saying I am not attacking artists like Kirby.
I do wonder how much the popularity of an artist like Kirby have to with with this art over the time he was in. Like are newer fans looking back with a sense of nostalgia when looking at him because he did the first Marvel Books and ones that were very popular. I am not saying this of every fan. There are the ones who like him because of his art and I get and respect that. But other artist like Steranko and Romita Sr were so much better then then him in my opinion.
Kirby is good and have talent and I respect what he did in the industry I just dont understand why people get attacked or belittled because they say he is not the best.
-
Unpopular opinions?
The best Star Wars movies were the prequels. Whiny Darth Vader was the best. Or maybe horrible little kid Vader. Thor Darkworld was the best Marvel movie, followed closely by Iron Man 2. Captain Terrell was the best captain in any Star Trek movie. But the first movie was the best. Lance Armstrong was a cycling god and honest man. Chocolate is disgusting. So is beer.
Do those work?

Unpopular opinions.
Brats are better than hot dogs.
The internet cannot shame people into changing.
Rey wasn't a Mary Sue. She was just badly written.
The Big Bang Theory wasn't that bad of a show. People don't like it because of social media groupthink and Youtube video essays.
Archie's New/Mighty Crusaders are actually interesting, but they barely get a chance.
Monster Hunter Stories was the best pokemon game on the 3DS, and I'm glad its getting a sequel.
Speaking of which, Pokemon has been stale since Gen 5.
Productive hobbies that aren't just consumption of media need to come back into style.

Talk to Romita and Steranko, they will tell you they learned everything about comis storytelling from Kirby. Who is being belittled? I have only seen foxley claim Kirby fans have "drunk to kool ade". Is disagreeing with a negative assessment of Kirby belittling?

I never said you were belittling him. I should have made that celar that is my fault. But I have seen many Kirby fans belittle those who dont like Kirby. Adn thats fine that they learned from Kirby. But I still think they are better.

Not sure it's unpopular. Hot dogs are just cheap and nostalgic childhood attachments and knockoffs of brats.

Vader is best when he's a 2-dimensional cardboard fist-shaker. Trying to make him "faux deep" was just a mistake. And that was worse than anything about Jar Jar. Star Wars is Luke's story. Period.

The Boys kind of feels like it doesn't really have a message, but plenty of people claim it does.

I don't think this is unpopular. It is in fact far more the popular opinion according to the ratings this show put up, even in its waning years, and the huge cultural touchstone it was. There's just loud communities of comedy snobs that are easy to find that **** on it. But they're the minority in all reality.

I LOVED BBT and consider it a documentary. Some people in fandom don't care for it because it picks on some of the lack of social graces some fans have. But so many of the events in that show have been situations my friends and I have been in. Even the wilder plots are situations that we would have done, if we could. In school I was Sheldon. I freely admit it and although many of them say things like "you weren't that bad", the people in my HS graduating class see it.
