So the smile is one of the optimistic aspects of the character that has stood the test of time. How important do you think it is for the Ip and superman as a character?

Same here, definitely...!
Its important that he usually wears a smile for the people. Environments of strife notwithstanding. Not because he has to but because he genuinely enjoys their presence. At the same time, its not the end of the world if Superman doesn't have a smile plastered on his face 24/7. But he should generally be a fun-loving guy, he's just serious when he's doing work.
Superman's smile can make miracles happen :).

Yeah I've heard that when Superman smiles while in orbit, the sun rises (or sets) behind him and the whole world bends over. :)
Not all the time, but if you neglect the smile are you even trying?
There are times when his smile is a definite must but others where I'd prefer to his red eyes so to speak. I guess the trick is knowing when to use and how much.
I mean... I feel like Superman having a big, sexy, charming-as-heck smile wasn't really a big deal for a lot of his history. When I think of the Golden Age Superman's smile, I think of a thin, wry smirk. In the Silver Age, Curt Swan [I]rarely[/I] draws Superman with a big smile, and Wayne Boring neither. Kurt Schaffenberger's Superman has the best smile of the Silver Age, I think, but the Lois Lane stories he often drew tend to be more humorous anyway. When I think of the Bronze Age Superman's smile, the first thing I thought of was him struggling to contain a grin while he chowed down on some green K in [i]Kryptonite Nevermore[/i] - not exactly a big bright Chris Reeve grin, though it [i]is[/i] a very [I]infectious[/I] smile!
Of course, in Maggin's [i]The Last Son of Krypton[/i], he says that Superman has a really charming smile, like Robert Redford, and Clark Kent's smile [I]doesn't[/I] have that same level, so that's pretty interesting to me, I always liked that idea.
Of course, George Reeves and Chris Reeve both have those stellar smiles, and so does Henry Cavill. I think a lot of this issue came from folks wishing that Cavill's Superman smiled more frequently. Maybe some of the "Superman smile" thing just plain old comes from the actors.
