That and their hair!
They all had distinctive haircut and you could tell who was who even in B/W!
It was a very good team with a lot of interesting interactions.
Wouldn’t the first “New X-Men” be the........All-New, All-Different X-Men?
Yeah, you're probably right but the word 'New X-Men' has been misused too many times.
First batch of X-Men:
Original five X-Men, Changeling, Mimic, Havok, Polaris
Second batch of 'New' X-Men:
Nightcrawler, Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Banshee, Rogue
Third batch of 'New' X-Men:
Original five New Mutants plus Magik, Magma, Cypher, Legion, Warlock.
Kitty should have been in New Mutants in X-Men 167 but she rebelled.

The title is awful. New X-men should be removed for obvious reasons

You are on point with these looks. The art was so simple, yet so telling. This one image alone has so much depth.

I first found out about the New Mutants from Excalibur. I didn't know what Excalibur was. All I knew was it has Nightcrawler in it. Then Kitty kept reminiscing on how X-Men died, because apparently that happened, and then she returned to the ruined Mansion site.

Lack of context made me knew nothing about them except the names Kitty mentioned. The most prominent one being Doug Ramsey, Kitty's former boyfriend who died, Illyana Rasputin, Colossus sister who apparently also was a mutant and died, because the last time I saw her she's just a farmer's daughter, and Wolfsbane, who I know nothing about except she can turn into a wolf.
That's it. I haven't read about them again since then. I'm interested mainly in Illyana, the one that was there since Classic X-Men beginnings. I know she's kinda nuts in Avengers vs X-Men, but I don't know how she came to be a mutant.

Her origin was introduced in Magik #1-#4 which is in New Mutants Epic collection volume 1
You might also want to pick up New Mutants Epic collection volume 2 for the story on how she joined the New Mutants.
The covers are in the first post in this thread.

Everyone else is dying so that the age of BOOM-BOOM may begin.
"Will she eventually burst out and star in her own stories? Only time will tell, true believers."
Do not tease me, big company man. This must become a reality so that we may be free from the SHACKLES AND CHAINS of team books. There must be a way to show the X-Office what the people really need. #BoomBoongoingSeries #TabbyTradePaperbacks #SaveDaredevil

Do X-Man and Blink count as New Mutants?
They were more or less official member of the team in the DnA run, after all.
Some people also count Bird Brain, or even Gosamyr, as New Mutants.
