I think this was discussed a while back but I wanted to revisit the subject for myself.
I have a few OOP omnibuses that are available in other formats (complete collections or partly in epics) and I am considering selling them off for the profit and just replacing them. I am having a hard time talking myself into parting with them though. Honestly I'm not even sure that the omnibus format is my favorite format to read comics. I like that they have the over-sized art and its all in one place and I like the hardcover, but the fact that weigh too much to hold comfortably in my lap and I probably don't want to read 25-50 issues of something at a given time means that they tend to stay on my shelf more than smaller sized books. I wonder if I collect and covet these omnibuses because of the mystique and the perceived prestige of them more than the actual content or enjoy-ability of them. Does anyone else share in this conundrum and/or have any advice on the subject?
Yes!!! I have to keep telling myself to only buy what i will read. I used to buy everything that was going OOP just so i wouldn't miss out. I soon realized it was and endless cycle that would never end, Then i would be stuck with Omnibus that i wouldn't even read.
Just buy what you want That way you won't burn yourself out.

At the end of the day, they're just books. Sell them off to some fool when prices spike. If you really like the content, just re-buy it in a more affordable format and put the cash you get for the difference in your wallet and sleep easy at night.
Did this not happen to Annihilation: Conquest? It disappeared about 2 weeks after release, then a month later, loads of them appeared?
That's what I was thinking, but I certainly bow to your knowledge (especially seen as I use your website for pretty much everything!)
Side note, quick question, the Bucky Barnes: The Winter Solider series - if that was to be collected, what filler stuff would you include? I know an 11 issue OHC is possible, but is there anything else that could or should go in that book to just make it a bit bigger?
I don't recall the Annihilation: Conquest situation too well since I already had the OHCs, but that sounds right. Again, these need to get to our shores by boat, it takes a fixed amount of time! ;)
I don't know that the Winter Solider series would be of much utility standing alone. So much of his arc of growth is embedded in Captain America, and he only becomes Winter Soldier again as of Fear Itself 7.1 in 2011, at which point everyone but Cap and Natasha presumed him dead. All of that Brubaker Return-to-WS material is already in his final Cap Omnibus and goes to Winter Solider #14, plus the "and Bucky" series (#620-628) is in that book as well.
Basically, all that's left that's significant to Winter Soldier (because, again, he wasn't appearing anywhere else due to his presumed death) are #15-19 of his series (which weren't amazing), Original Sin (which was VERY significant and also AWESOME but isn't going to get put into a Complete Collection), All-New Invaders (which he departs with #12), and the subsequent Ales Kot series #1-11 (which was super weird, weirder than normal Kot weirdness).
Winter Soldier: The Bitter March was a story set during his time as a brainwashed Soviet assassin which I think was 4 or 5 issues? Also the Original Sin Annual, which was NOT included in the O.S. OHC and also the best part of O.S. should be collected in the deluxe format.
Plus that material (notably, Bitter March was by Remender), but as WinterSoldier76 says, that's in flashback.
So, maybe you could argue for a post-Brubaker collection of Winter Solider #15-19, All-New Invaders #1-12, and Bucky Barnes #1-11, but that would be too big for a single Complete Collection, wouldn't sell as an omnibus, and would be missing the major change in status quo from the end of Original Sin.

For mew the Omnibus edition ticks a few boxes. The art will be oversized and look great, the paper stock used to be good and I knew I'd get the whole story and I wouldn't be left with orphaned content coupled with the fact that price per issue was usually good I ended up buying most of my comics this way. In the ideal world I would go for the OHC as the preferred format as I still get the oversized art and used to get the paper stock, but I wasn't always sure I'd get the whole story. Now there haven't been a lot of orphaned series but enough to annoy me.

Every time someone complains they can't hold an omnibus I picture them as a 70 year old or someone with spaghetti arms who keeps an inhaler on a string around their neck.

HAHA. I never said I couldn't hold it, but its not as comfortable to read over a long stretch of time.
I guess you could qualify that by saying the Simonson Thor omnibus is a chore, but something like Fantastic Four by Hickman is just fine.
Any thoughts on avengers standoff? Was gonna hold off on post secret wars marvel for a while, but I figured I'd ask
I'm also curious, as I was thinking of purchasing it alongside the JLA Vol. 2 Omnibus from IST at 50%. Any thoughts on Standoff would be appreciated.

Thank you Wintersoldier76 and Krisis. Some good possible maps there.....

It took me a while to decide to do it but once I made up my mind to sell off all my marvel omnis it was like a weight had been lifted, I had all these heavy, rare, expensive books sitting on my shelf gathering dust, I do most of my reading at work and it was too much of a hassle to take these into work, have pretty much sold them all now (just Bendis DD and Cap America stuff left) I replaced pretty much everything with those complete/ultimate trades (apart from Ennis punisher) and had enough money left to pay the deposit on a new car, I say do it, life is too short to have all these books sitting on your shelf, they may be worth a fair bit more than when you got them, but they are never going to be worth a fortune

If a hobby is causing someone stress, that person needs to reevaluate their priorities. These are leisure items; if they start to consume more time and thought than real word issues, something seems wrong with that.
For me, these books are a nice way to unload all the job stress I bring home. I only buy what I like, and try to read what I buy. If I start to pile up unread books then I back off for a few weeks to catch up.
All the thought people here seem to put into a book's "value" and all the wasted energy and money selling and re buying the SAME CONTENT THEY ALREADY OWN is baffling to me.

I'm barely into my thirties and was a swimmer in college, and I struggle to hold most Omnibuses without discomfort.

Man, this hits so close to home. I've been collecting since 2012 and pretty much have everything i want (or can buy later since they are available) except a few white whales (Bendis/Brubaker DDs, infinite crisis). But I don't see an end point, books keep coming out and I have shelf after shelf filling up. I don't even have a permanent house (recent graduate) so my books are all not even in one place. I keep thinking of one day getting it altogether in one shelf and sending it to CBR shelf porn column (also the forum here) but it seems the collecting will never end. But I also think about selling all off it off and going on a euro trip or something. But I know when I do actually do part with them i won't be totally happy. Such a big part of my life for the past few years was reading this forum, bidding on ebay, building complete runs, enjoying clearout prices and making wish lists. Its a very weird place to be in. On one hand selling them off would take a huge (literal) load off my back and sometimes I wonder if these will even hold up in the future, but at the same time it seems all these years of collecting would have been for nothing (since I have 60% of the collection yet to be read).
They look so nice on the shelf though!

I'm 19. I love omnibuses but admit, they can make for some uncomfortable reads.

Agreed. I love omnis but prefer reading OHC or HC's because of that reason.
