Hmm. I could go on and on about all the things I didn't like about the trailer... I'm mostly just disappointed cause there was so much hype about it being closer to the comics. I'd say this looks about as close to the comics as the first Del Toro film. It's fine that this movie exists, I don't really have any interest in watching it though.
-
The justification for this movie was that it was darker, grittier, and closer to the original comic. Not only does this trailer not give an indication that this movie is darker tonally, but it also makes absolutely no attempt to replicate the visual style which is the comics most defining feature. Sadly, it looks rather cheap; like an action movie from over a decade ago.
After watching the trailer a few times on a big TV I figured out what's bothering me about the Hellboy makeup: it looks fixed and restrictive, like David Harbour is struggling to act from under a thick mask. Ron Perlman's makeup was very expressive.

The main appeal(for me) of Hellboy comics is Mignola’s gothic and atmospheric artwork. Victorian mansions, crypts, tombs, ancient ruins, misty black forests etc. but it looks like most of this movie will take place in a grey generic urban setting :(
-
I'm not crazy excited after this trailer. I feel like the Del Toro films are this rare entity that didn't really do all that faithful of an adaption of the comics, but I liked them as their own thing. Mostly because Guillermo Del Toro has an unmatched eye when it comes to horror and fantasy. His movies (at least the first one) toed the line as a generic comic book film, but had enough of his person vision bleed through that it's worthwhile, while the second was closer to full Del Toro and I can watch both as that seperate from my love of the comics.
But, when it was announced that a reboot was happening that would be closer to the comics, I was kind of looking forward to it. But frankly, this feels like the Del Toro movies without the vision. Not a great look for the powers that be. This just makes me want Hellboy III more than ever.

As a HB fan who's read all the comics and love Mignola's style...
I am really sad to say that trailer 100% missed the mark.
Not even close to being faithful to the comics - so much to point out, but I won't. I'll go watch the film for what it is, but I have the comics to follow HB's story.
-
The thing about Hellboy is its a Horror comic where the monster decided instead of killing everyone it'd join the Government and hold back the apocalypse. What they need is to use this framing, make it a horror movie first and a pulp/superhero movie second.

We need to keep in mind that the people who made the movie rarely make the trailer.
I dislike that trailer, but it doesn't have to be indicative of the actual movie. Let's all remember:

This is exactly what I thought about. I just watched the trailer with the sound muted, and enjoyed it much more. I think they’ve got the look, this particular song was just not a good choice
-
That's certainly true, Joker. And I'm definitely waiting to withhold judgment, but this trailer didn't get me in any way excited.
-
No, me either. They 100% blew showing the movie they'd been talking about for the last year.
I'll judge the film for what it is when it comes out, but that trailer was hot garbage.

Unfortunately as much as Mignola has been hyping the movie as a dark horror movie, it's hard to take him at his word after he also claimed Hellboy in Hell and BPRD had years left in their runs...only to announce they were ending with a handful of issues to resolve everything. I still love all the actual work he's put out this year, Koschei the Deathless was a masterpiece - but from now on I'm treating his press statements as sheer PR and nothing more.
My initial concern when Neil Marshall was announced as director would be that the film would turn out bland - Marshall isn't a bad director by any means but he's largely a very capable journeyman. Frankly this trailer makes me think that concern will be realized. It probably won't be an absolute trainwreck or anything of that sort, but I wouldn't be surprised if Hellboy 2019 winds up as a mediocre, quickly forgotten film.
I certainly HOPE it's better than this trailer because I'd love to have another strong Hellboy film and the potential for more Mignola adaptations, but it is what it is. And now that I've gotten criticisms out of the way, I'll repost my breakdown from reddit of Hellboy easter eggs, lore references, etc. I'm sure many of them were instantly obvious to all of you.
-Excalibur, https://youtu.be/dt5g5_1cKVk?t=13 is teased right off the bat, which Hellboy acquires during *The Wild Hunt* story arc. Obviously this film is based on that.
-Next up monsters are attacking London, https://youtu.be/dt5g5_1cKVk?t=15, this is vaguely similar to the final battle in *The Storm and the Fury* where Hellboy battles an Ogdru Jahad possessed Nimue. Their fight is so volatile it manifests a storm that begins tearing the city apart.
-The Wild Hunt, https://youtu.be/dt5g5_1cKVk?t=71 shows up for a quick shot, Britain's secret societies and nobility gather for a hunt whenever Trolls awaken from their graves. Professor Bruttenholm took part in a Wild Hunt when he was a young man.
-The Osiris Club, https://youtu.be/dt5g5_1cKVk?t=77 hosts the Wild Hunt and appear for a brief moment to ask Hellboy about his hand. They're a spinoff of the Heliopic Brotherhood of Ra, a secret society dedicated to amassing occult knowledge and items.
-A monstrous vampiric creature in a wrestling ring, https://youtu.be/dt5g5_1cKVk?t=88 is a reference to Hellboy in Mexico, a story where Hellboy gets drunk for a month and wanders Mexico with luchadors fighting vampires.
-BPRD's Colorado Mountain Base, https://youtu.be/dt5g5_1cKVk?t=96 originally the BPRD was based in Connecticut but moved west to a more secure location during the Plague of Frogs storyline. The base was a major scientific facility during WW2 and holds all sorts of occult experiments and history from a magic Iron Man-esque suit to dossiers on Daimio's grandmother...
-Quick flash of Rasputin summoning Hellboy with the masked scientist Kronen by his side, https://youtu.be/dt5g5_1cKVk?t=100 which takes place during *Seed of Destruction*
-Baba Yaga's Chicken Leg House, https://youtu.be/dt5g5_1cKVk?t=101 Baba Yaga is one of Hellboy's greatest villains and no, she doesn't look like Keanu Reeves
-Hellboy fighting giant Trolls, https://youtu.be/dt5g5_1cKVk?t=103 is straight out of a scene in *The Wild Hunt* story arc
-Grugrach, https://youtu.be/dt5g5_1cKVk?t=115 fights Hellboy, Grugrach is a major recurring villain with ties to Hellboy and Alice.

I don't like that Grugrach is huge in the movie. He's a sad little thing, not a bad ass monster.
-
I feel like this trailer breakdown by David Harbour helps clear up a few things. For one, he says that song is not actually in the movie. :)

I've heard that the people who saw the test screenings say the trailer provided an accurate tone of what the film is. Could be false information. That being said I don't think that the song is the only thing I have problems with in this trailer. I don't think there was a single thing I liked in it. Hellboys characterization seems to be even younger and angstier than Perlman, Hellboy's relationship with Broom is father and son again, and the dialogue is pretty damn clunky. Tbh it looks like they used the Del Films as reference about as much as they did the source material. The shot of Hellboy with Osiris club was pretty cool though.

Grom, the pig monster from the Corpse, was huge.
