Sarah Essen was a member of the Gotham City Police Department and the second wife of Police Commissioner James Gordon.
I thought she is a great character. I hated how her story ended.

I had a little bit about the introduction of Sarah Essen (not yet Essen-Gordon) in the Gotham Cops thread recently.
The "Year One" arc also was where Sarah Essen (later Sarah Essen-Gordon) was introduced, in Batman #405 (March 1987).

She's have a more active role in the story later on in that same issue, as well as in Jim Gordon's life before the end of that story arc.
She definitely was an interesting addition to the Gotham City police force.

You mean in NML?
It was heart wrenching especially reading it as a kid that was my Barbara getting shot in the spine by Joker.
All of it was very poetic, her trying to save the new generation of Gothamites without whom Gotham would lose all hope and then it would truly be a No Man's Land.
Sarah's and Gordon's love story was pretty amazing especially in the 90's.
I remember she was a red head when she was brought back in present day continuity.
Does Gordon have a thing for red heads? And has he talked to Dick about it?

is Batman Year One before or after Batman 89 because her overall look... blonde, cheek bones... reminds me of Claudia Schiffer Vicki Vale

D'oh, my mind still defaults to Dixon/Grant/Monech era as the 'present'
Isn't that more like back in the last century?
Well yes but I lived through it. Basically everything from Dixon/Grant/Monech to Rucka/Burbaker to Morrison/Dini to Snyder/Tynion to Tom King is just one big stretch of 'present' to me.
