If that’s the case, then why didn’t he just stay with the Dodgers who already ARE a contender?
Oh, yeah, the money. Silly me.
Naw, the Dodgers are toast. No Scherzer, no Seager, likely no Kershaw, or if he is there, he's not what he once was, and who else have they lost? The Met's, weirdly seem to be the new Dodgers, trying to buy a Series. Their payroll must now be something to see.

And are the Rangers of all teams making moves? That was out of the blue...
The Braves are going to have to add at least one very good starter, and several top pen guys. And at least two more big bats, even if Acuna, Jr. makes it back in his usual future HOF form. And if Soroka can finally take a step and throw a pitch without breaking his foot or leg or whatever. They need moves!
Interestingly, Ozuna finally got his MLB punishment, something like a 20 to 30 game suspension without pay. No word on if that is for this season or the last. Wonder if the Braves will take him back?
Also, unless the Phils and Braves make major moves....the Mets will have them. On paper, at least.

Braves did just sign Kirby Yates to 2 years, he was the best closer in baseball two years ago although he struggled with injury last year

Braves need to move now if they are going to re-sign Freeman. Rumors have it the Dodgers are targeting Freeman as the replacement for the departed Seager. If someone is going to make a move, it needs to be tomorrow as everything screeches to a halt on the 1st when the CBA expires.

My Phillies need a boatload of help. Two outfielders, a third baseman, maybe a shortstop, another solid starter, a closer (after Neris left) and bullpen help. Will the team open the Brinks truck like the Mets had? I'm not sure.

Well, IIRC, Freeman lives in So Cal in the offseason, so that may be an upside for either the Dodgers or the Angels or Padres. If I were Atlanta, I'd start offering interesting numbers REAL soon. That Ozuna thing....was retroactive, so it's a slap on the wrist.
Here's a link to what he did.

Looks like the Tigers are signing Javier Baez to a 6 year $140 million deal.
Seems the big spenders this offseason are teams trying to change their trajectory rather than the traditional big spending contenders snapping up talent.

So then a year or so from now there will either be a bunch of greatful gm's or a bunch of teams that hate those big contracts that they now have to pay...

Somebody's bound to experience buyer's remorse. Teams like the Tigers and rangers, moribund and hapless for years can't change things overnight by throwing money at the problem.

The Tigers have been slowly restocking their system and their pocket book since Dombrowski left as GM. He left the cupboards bare trying to buy and trade for a winner while he was there, which is what he always does, sometimes with some success, but teams are always barren afterwards. The Tigers have had time to recover and I think they feel they have enough of a base now to start adding some big pieces and filling holes via free agency. I think they might be premature, but I think the impending end of the CBA is putting them in act now mode just in case. The Rangers, I have no clue what they are thinking except hey we need to look like we are doing SOMETHING to keep our season ticket holder base happy enough to keep renewing.

More small deals as the deadline approaches...
Cubs sign two-catcher Yan Gomes to a 2 year $13 million deal; and a one year deal with Clint Frazier (terms not disclosed).
Pirates sign catcher Roberto Perez to a 1 year $5 million deal
Braves exercise 2024 option for manager Brian Snitker.

The Dodgers might need a replacement for Max Muncy....his injury is worse than they originally thought and isn't healing properly.
-
More late moves before the deadline expires...
-Rays dealt All Star 3B Joey Wendle to the Miami Marlins for Kameron Misner an OF/3B prospect.
-Rougned Odor signs a 1 year deal with the Orioles.
Speaking of the CBA, reports are that after negotiating all day today, the sides are no closer to an agreement. They are scheduled ot meet again tomorrow, but all expectations are that a lockout will be set in place as of midnight tomorrow.
