DC Africana Appreciation

I really dig how well constructed the Latino appreciation thread is so I decided to revamp the thread for DC's black characters. This is a thread dedicated to DC's characters from across the Afro-Diaspora, however utilized or underutilized they may be and regardless of alignment. I will try to keep this up to date so feel free to post anyone I missed and I will add them to the list.

It's was a tough choice for me between Black Lightning and Vixen but ultimately, Vixen won out as I think she's better developed. After these two, Bumblebee comes next for me. Others I really like are Mr. Terrific, Steel(John), Amanda Waller, The Signal, Aqaualad, Static, and Black Manta(best Black Villain!).
-
It's kinda funny how Jacques Foccart predated Gambit as a French speaking hero.
-
A shame we don't get to see much of Vixen right now.

Thanks. I try to keep the Latino thread updated. It gets hard at times though. Cool thread by the way.
I voted for Black Lightning, but I'm curious if the results will be the same as the other thread (that had 130 votes).

Are you referring to the thread I had created? I'm not a 100% sure but I think Vixen had emerged victorious in that one. So not surprising to see her take an early lead here too.
It's really time to give her the epic, fantastical Aquaman/Wonder Woman meets Black Panther treatment that she deserves.

Thanks man! You're doing a great job over on the Latinx thread; much respect. I actually was meaning to ask over there, do you know of any Afro-Latino characters that I missed? I could only think of Fuerza but I'm not sure if there are any more in DC.

I didn't realize Vixen was so popular. I definitely would be down for an African fantasy epic starring Vixen. After the success of Black Panther, I don't doubt there are a wealth of creators inspired to capitalize on that; black ones especially but not excluding anyone if they handle the property with care and diligence. Throw Bronze Tiger in there too and DC could boost two profiles in one go.

To elaborate a little further, there's so much potential here with Vixen and the mythology of African gods and especially goddesses. There could be a way of making her an Avatar of the Red but tying the concept to deities like the Yoruba goddesses, Bast and Aset.
It's definitely a part of rich Africana culture that would lend itself very effectively to the superhero landscape. Even Black Panther's All The Stars video used the aforementioned goddesses prominently even if they aren't directly connected to BP. Imagine if Mari's story directly reconnected her roots to these rich traditions.

It was a really tough call, but I got to stick with The Signal. Duke Thomas resonated to me since a long time, and he's a little guy still. He deserves all the support he can get.
-
Hard to choose just one. I love Cyborg (the Walker/Reis version is the best!), Mr. Terrific (better than ever in The Terrifics), Vixen, and Bronze Tiger (both are criminally underused by DC).
I would love to see Michael Cray/Deathblow make his way to Earth 0.
-
Ended up going with Vixen

oh man, i was REALLY torn between John Stewart and Duke Thomas (and Static too to a lesser extent) ultimately John won out just due to how much more material he's got to work with and how artsy and trippy his run on Mosaic was. Duke holds special place in my heart though, he really resonated with me from the moment i saw him and I hope DC gets there act together with him. Love that boy!

I agree on all counts. I'm currently working my way through the Walker/Reis Cyborg run, it is criminally overlooked. I only just recently heard about how good it was.

I don't remember who created it, I just remember it had a ton of replies and John Stewart led the poll followed by Vixen and Black Lightning.
I also second that notion for a Vixen film.

That feels kinda disingenuous. Just a little. While I appreciate the sentiment, DC's been taking a pretty "color-blind" approach to their black character by which I mean their "blackness" (so to speak) is incidental. It's odd to say "honor our heroes willing to stand tall in the face of adversity" for Black History Month, when their black heroes rarely touch on social and racial adversity. Iunno, I think it would've been better if they just said Happy Black History Month with collage of their black heroes. That's just me tho.
-
Honestly. They are all either great or have the potential to be great. I love them all in different ways. John Stewart and Cyborg were the first black superheroes i've seen on television as a child. So i have special attachment to them. Vixen is really a superstar in the making. I want to see her grow. I love the ones you named. But i also like Thunder, Crimson Avenger, Tanya Spears, Jakeem Thunder, Batwing and Voodoo.
I need to see more black villains though.
Can i use that picture as my background? lol it's beautiful.

How did I forget Crimson Avenger and Jakeem Thunder smh. I agree, we definitely could use some more prominent black villains; ideally some that are more complex than Black Manta. I LOVE Manta but he's kinda devolved into a one-dimensional petty rage machine in recent years. It's been fun to play with and it really let's him explore his ruthless side but I would love for something more complex from him or another black villain.
Also, yeah you can use the picture, i can't stop your or nothing; feel free!

By the way, shouldn't we add Gnomon to the list of Black Villains ?

Oof this poll is hard. But if I had to ultimately choose one it would have to be Bronze Tiger. Second would be a tie between John and Mari.

Man, what I wouldn't give for a book where we could explore Tyroc, the Marzal, and the full range of his reality warping screams. He could be one of DC's most powerful black heroes.
-
Vixen gets my vote with John, Cyborg and Black Lightning coming in a three way tie for second place.
If DC wanted to make a Vixen movie, I think they should go with the magical side of her abilities. Give her magic beings to fight. I was thinking she should fight a high level magic users like Blaze or Satanus...which could tie into the Captain Marvel/Shazam franchise. I could also go with her fighting the tribes of Onini the Python, Osebo the Leopard, and the Mboro Hornets, the enemies of Anansi the Spiders.

If I where making a Vixen movie, I'd have her be from Ghana since that's the country of origin for her mythology.
Vixen gets my vote with John, Cyborg and Black Lightning coming in a three way tie for second place.

I think it would be best to create or develop her own villains and leave Shazam villains to Shazam.
Oof this poll is hard. But if I had to ultimately choose one it would have to be Bronze Tiger. Second would be a tie between John and Mari.
Haha ya I was going to put him but then I based my vote on everything from comics to the media stuff and Bronze Tiger wins for me. I mainly love Aqualad from YJ and no where else. If his comic version gets better than he would be number 1.

Did anyone read the newest Scooby-Doo Team-Up?

Man, what I wouldn't give for a book where we could explore Tyroc, the Marzal, and the full range of his reality warping screams. He could be one of DC's most powerful black heroes.
I never knew this much about Tyroc. Unfortunately, the Legion books I read never featured him, but I knew of him and what he looked like. This costume is a lot better than his first one.

With his real name being Troy Stewart i'm surprised they have not made him a descendant of Green Lantern John Stewart.

Thats exactly I didn't pick him, I wish they would put more effort into the comic version. He's way too good a character to be wasted.
