Can someone briefly define each class, and describe the specific differences between them?
Rogue - sneaky git who gets ridiculous damage bonuses when backstabbing an enemy. Thieves, assassins, spies, or just plain any character that is good in a fight but not a really specialised warrior. Han Solo, Robin Hood, the Gray Mouser, Black Widow. My personal favourite.
Mage - guy whohas through years of study learned magic. Comes in many forms. You got your standard pyrotechnic damage dealer, subtle, controlling versions, dudes who are into creating armies of minions etcetera. Doctor Strange. Come to think of it, they're pretty rare in fiction.
Fighter - ye standard buff musclehead who likes to stab things. Captain America, Anakin Skywalker, Ben Grimm, Buffy Summers.
Tank - not a class but a combat type. A character of any class who can survive in melee and tie up the opponents while the mages and rogues can kill them.
Cleric - religious dude who is somewhat proficient in beating up people but is mostly a glorified combat medic. Oddball that does not really exist in non D&D related fantasy literature.
Paladin - cleric that is more religious than regular clerics, nd more proficient at killing people but less good at healing them.
Ranger - Fighter who put points in tracking and nature skills. Aragorn.
Monk - does magical kung fu. Kwai Chang Caine.
Warlock - different type of mage. Gets powers from demons or something like that instead of from study. Felix Faust, I think.
Sorcerer - different type of mage. Has innate magic for various reasons instead of having to have learned it. Any Harry Potter wizard, Scarlet witch, Gandalf, and really most fictional wizardly types fit into this cathegory.

Thanks all who replied! That's very informative. There is some overlap, and some are surprisingly specific. Also Anakin, Thing and Buffy in the same category really throws me? They seem like completley different types of characters?
I have to rethink the classification of that bootleg team I posted earlier.

Curious if you could apply it to the main Rogue One team? How would you classify them?
Rogue - Jyn Erso ? Besides the lead, from the descriptions seems it would be her when she's picked up, or living among Saw's guerrillas, but also the staby spy elements more Cassian Andor.
Ranger - Cassian Andor? Seems he's the long range "shooty" shooter and expert, although the wilderness survivor and natural skills is more Jyn, maybe switch the two?
Tank - K2S0 seems pretty straight forward?
Fighter - Baze Malbus stout, good with heavy weapons and muscle-head seems to fit?
Monk/Cleric/Paladin? - Chirrut Îmwe Martial arts and Ki/Chi guy, blind monk, protect with magic and shield, a holy warrior holy man, healing and protective purposes?
So that leaves:
Mage/Sorcerer ? - Bodhi Rook? His temperament seems right- magical things, usually in a utilitarian or combat capacity, magic artifact? That's a stretch? If you substitute magic here for technology? He brings the secret message, breaks the code to sneak past the shield? Really doesn't fit, substitute with Chirrut?

Does it work for that other Suicide-mission Team?

Rogue - Harley Quinn
Ranger - Dead-Shot
Tank - Croc
Fighter - Boomerang / Flag?
Paladin/Cleric - Diablo
Monk- Katana
Mage/Sorcerer - Enchantress
?

In any half-decent game there are enough options and choices and possible builds for any class that it'll fit a very wide variety of characters.
D&D Fighters have a gazillion hit points and superbly proficient at actual up close and personal asskicking. And often are also very good at leading people into battle.
Anakin also has levels in Space Sorcerer (characters can have more than one class) but what he really likes is just whacking stuff with a lightsaber or shooting stuff in his starfighter.

I was thinking that one would be a good fit!

Also, is there a D&D class for psychics?
Because Nic Cage in NEXT was really fun!
