Courtesy of a Torres post on Twitter tagged Superman78, we got our first new villain:

Cool, is that actually confirmed to be for this project? Guess we’ll be getting Brainiac as well since I can’t see Venditti passing on writing that Rogue for Superman.

A retro comic movie version of Brainiac in the Donner-verse could be really interesting.
I wonder if it was a royalties thing.
The Salkins were notorious for screwing over people (just ask Donner), so it's possible it was an attempt by Puzo to prevent them from exploiting his work without paying him, but that's just a guess.
None that I've heard, but it's the reason why DC has never capitalized on what several creators over the years have wanted to do. Byrne was originally slated to do it for the Superman Returns Prequel comics, but then pulled out when Didio found out about Puzo's contract.
I've read that Byrne originally wanted to base Krypton in his reboot on the Donner version but couldn't due to legal issues...could it be for the same reason?
Anyway, whatever it is, it didn't stick, given that we basically had the Donner Krypton in comics canon after IC, and I think the current take on Krypton in the comics and in other media as well is heavily inspired by this version.

I guess not officially, but Torres tagged the post #Superman78 rather than just #Superman, so it stands to reason.

The look of Krypton in Donner's film came about because of the work of production designer John Barry. I think Puzo's vision of Krypton's asthetic was non specific and such things were left somewhat vague in the script to allow the original director Guy Hamilton and his people leeway on how it was to be interpreted on screen. Thus, DC and Warners are free to use the visual elements of Krypton without violating Puzo's stipulation.

Got it!
I guess the stipulation only covered adapting specific scenes from the movie then? Because a lot of elements from the movie have ended up replicated in the comics and other media - the Fortress grown from a kryptonian crystal, the Jor-El hologram etc. Probably a few more things I'm missing.

Fantastic; Here's hoping we get to see Donner-esque versions of other great Superman Villains (in my case, I'd like to see Brainiac, Metallo, Parasite, Ultra-Humanite, Toyman and Prankster)

Yeah it looks like this will straight up be regular pre-marriage Superman for those who want that.

Who would've thought Superman met Darkseid in-between Superman 1 and 2 :p.

I don’t know why they’re doing that instead of setting it after Superman 2. Maybe because like I said, this is meant to be the pre-marriage status quo and they don’t want people pressuring them to get Clark & Lois married?

I guess it hits that sweet spot where Superman has just started out and is in his "prime" as far status quo is concerned.
