The Previous Thor Appreciation thread was closed but had two things I wanted to comment on.
1. Gerry Conway's run on Thor was indeed impressive. I had read his run on FF and was very disappointed, but I was pleasently surprised by his run on Thor. He played up the fantasy level in a different way than Lee/Kirby, but was still consistent with their vision. Conway even gave Thor a "Conan" feel, I am referring to the "Kartag" story line circa issues 194 or so. Conway also brought back the Absorbing Man to the book. Which brings up the other thing I want to comment on:
2. Top Ten Thor villains
1. Loki
2. Thanos (Hickman wrote an epic fight between the two in Infinity, but even before that Jurgans and Romita had Thor face him....I can't comment on Blood and Thunder yet cause I haven't read it yet.)
3. Man Gog
4. Ultron (reference the Busiek/Perez Avengers)
5. The Absorbing Man
6. The Wrecker
7. Doctor Dooms Destroyer (Gage I think, post JMS Thor)
8. Hela, if you count her as a villain
9. Ego Prime
10.
I am going to leave 10 blank because I need to think about it some more, plus, I still have more reading to do.
And it looks like that's Thor's normal hand in the previews art, so lets hope the one arm thing goes away.
So Thor will fight Captain Glory in Empyre from what i heard? Well hopefully that fight ends as soon as it starts... personally dunno if Ronan is still around but i would like to see a fight between him and Thor more so.

That wasn't the real Thanos but one of his Thanosi clones. The Thanosi were introduced by Jim Starlin in Infinity Abyss (2002) in order to retcon the appearances of Thanos in Ka-Zar Vol 4, Thor Vol 2, X-Man Annual #1998 and Avengers: Celestial Quest, as those stories didn't follow Thanos' character development at the end of the Infinity Gauntlet (Mark Waid, Dan Jurgens and Steve Englehart ignored that Thanos forsook nihilism at the end of Infinity Gauntlet #6 and helped Adam Warlock and other heroes save the universe on more than one occasion). Thanos realized that the most disturbing flaw to his clones was there intellectual deficiency, which usually ended with them settling for the most destructive answer to any problem. Sometimes there are characters that need a definitive ending with no more appearances. like manga characters, and Starlin's Thanos is one of them.
I'm also not a fan of Hickman's Thanos. Hickman, Lemire and Cates take on the character has for the most part, rung particularly shallow as far a I'm concerned with Thanos being protrayed as a barbaric cosmic potentate and more or less reliant on brute force to get his points across as opposed to using his cunning and scientific resources, and we know that the brutish, rampaging villain is Mangog and Juggernaut's shtick, not Thanos. And Bendis use of him as a saturday morning cartoon villain with guns who can be punched by anyone, including Street level vigilantes, was pretty infuriating. The less said about Jason Aaron's regrettable goth-tinged Thanos Rising story the better.

Ronan was mercy killed by Black Bolt in Death of the Inhumans after a rogue legion of Kree soldiers led by Vox turned him into a agonizing cyborg. Also i have no idea how would you make Ronan fight Thor since he hasn't being a villain since Annihilation.
I appreciate the long hair. Very nordic! Plus I was sick of the Hemsworth look. Now...someone tell me he ditched the ridiculous Destroyer arm that Aaron has him in! :p

That sucks, probably should have brought him back in time for Empyre. I mean that really wouldn't be hard, we have hero fighting heroes all the time and from what we can tell this whole Empyre stuff can make up any excuse it wants to pit them against one another, pretty much all of the Kree and Skrulls are seemingly ok with attacking Earth from what we saw at the end of Incoming.

But why would Hulkling help the Kree/Skrull alliance invade Earth?
But why would Hulkling help the Kree/Skrull alliance invade Earth?
I have no idea, they have yet to reveal the reason behind it, we just know that he is leading them to attack Earth at the moment and the Avengers and F4 will be resisting them.

Well, Ronan may not be a cliche villain, but he's not exactly a hero ;)
He'll be back, and you can just have him and Thor clashing over a fugitive
SO pumped for the new series!!!! Glad my shop is open today.

I think the new issue is going to go over very well with fans.
Hope you enjoy it!

616 Ronan struck me as a Lawful Neutral enforcer, like Judge Dredd, who puts his homeworld at the top of his priorities, so it's easy to see him clashing with a Earth hero over a misunderstanding.
Although i don't think Ronan is powerful enough to be a threat to Thor in a duel. Unless he has some backup and a plan.
So we finally find out the reason behind Thors new look. Not entirely sure how to feel about it. Wont spoil it until others have read it
[spoil]so heavily weakened Galactus can regrow Thor's arm but Odin and Thor with full Odinforce can't????[/spoil]
I am gonna give this time but what i personally did not like was [spoil]Thor being a herald, that can work as a short mini-series but being the main driving force behind a new series is kinda sketchy to me, it basically makes everything Thor does void if he is gonna get the power cosmic now, Thor doesn't need it he is powerful enough on his own... i guess anything beats him jobbing so i guess i will give it time.[/spoil]
The book was a good read.
but i dislike what galactus did. it was unnecessary amd thor does not need external amps.
Then theres the stuff with the hammer that just brings Aaron vibes.
plus i was looking for ward to seeing more of sif, Balder and Volstagg, a cosmic adventure will most likely leave them out of the picture again.
lets see how issue 2 plays out, but i already feel my hope slip away.

I think everyone at Marvel is unaware of the Odinforce at this point.
Also is anyone else getting Fraction Thor vibes from this? I felt like Thor was a bit of a jerk towards Loki and to those heralds who didn't appear hostile to him at all.

Fraction started the trend of writing Thor like a boorish barbarian. Gillen was the last good Thor writer. I never had great expectation for Cates take on Thor to be honest.

LoL true.
it seems the only thing OF does this days is to increase your lightning attacks LMAO.

They days of Odin being a walking deus Ex machina are long gone.
Happy New Year to the God of Thunder .
I loved it.
I’m glad Thor has gone in a slightly different direction than normal. Yes, Thor is a herald level character and has power on a level that most characters don’t have but seeing him as _____________________________________ is interesting. I thought his characterisation was fine. Yes, he was a bit harsh on Loki but it’s part of their love-hate relationship to interact as they do.
Also, as much as I love Thor, Odin etc I’d always put the big G above Odin in terms of sheer power. G is a fundamental force of the entire universe which means he should be far above Sky Gods. Of course Odin can compete with him at full power but G should be depicted as a few levels above Earth Gods.
As for Thor’s new look I watched the trailer to Empyre earlier and there is a picture of Thor with a slight different look to this costume. Maybe it’s the artists interpretation but there are too many changes for it to be error prone to this costume.
It’s been a great start to the New Year and decade for Thor imo.
Cates has done it again! Really liked that twist at the end and look forward to seeing where issue two goes.
Did guys see the preview pages for the next issue?
Looks like Thor is getting a major power up. At least for now.
I wonder if the arm and the eye growing back is permanent or he will go back to his previous look once he loses the cosmic power.
Now thor should be stronger than Galactus or at least as powerful as Cosmic ghost rider.

He got the power cosmic from Galactus.

I bought the director’s cut and it had a preview page as you said. Looked good.

Yep, I think it’ll only be for this 5 issue arc. But I’m wondering if this Black Winter story will continue beyond this 5 issue arc, because if it doesn’t then it will seem a bit short.
Also, if you watch the Empyre trailer you’ll see Thor wearing a tweaked version of this costume.

i hope they do this. i like the new look, but i dont like the power cosmic aspect. its unnecessary. and with the way writers dont know how to scale things, its a matter of time till another writer on another book has this Thor show up to get knocked out by Namor or colossus or something silly like that.

Which reminds me, is Thor still in Aaron's Avengers?

yes Brood Thor in the Space

Hmm, will Thor stay with his classic look, or will he return to having an indestructible arm and one eye?
Brain teaser, that ;)

Well it was thanos in the original run, it was retconned later
For no real good reason as I understand it
I do think thanos since the gauntlet trilogy has been badly written and really shud be put to bed by marvel
Not keen on what I've heard as to the cosmic power up nor to his new situation at all

After infinity Gauntlet, Thanos was no longer a nihilist villain obsessed with magic macguffins and he became a lonely farmer who would occasionally help Adam Warlock and other heroes save the universe. The Ka-zar and Thor stories that got retconned in Infinity Abyss by Starlin regressed Thanos into a mustache twirling villain. So i have no issues with retconning writers that ignore genuine character development.
First issue was good I thought. I plan on reading along with Cates for now.
Not keen on what I've heard as to the cosmic power up nor to his new situation at all
I feel the same way. I haven't read the actual issue yet, so maybe it reads better than it sounds.
Very interesting story. (Slightly disturbed by the apparently huge death toll that only got a passing mention.)
The writing is very tight, so much so that by the time I was a third of the way through I may as well have read it all because everything just played out in the only way it could. Which felt a little like Gillen. I suspect the final reveal will have an abrupt twist in the next issue, and things will not be as they are being ‘heralded’.
Loving the art.
I feel the same way. I haven't read the actual issue yet, so maybe it reads better than it sounds.
Yes me either, and I'll be happy if I'm wrong
