Saying Titans’ Starfire “Looks Like a Hooker” Is Not Good Criticism
Finally, let’s get down to the nitty gritty of it all: race. Look, before we do anything, let’s get this out. If you don’t like Starfire in Titans so far because you don’t like the costume or styling then welcome, you have joined the majority of people on the internet, including this writer. Thinking Starfire’s costume is bad =/= racism. Making racist comments about the actress playing her and harassing her about it = racism.

Let’s not pretend that this “prostitute” thing doesn’t come from the Cookie Lyon-style fur coat they put her in and the dated wig, because there is nothing about this costume signals her being a sex worker unless you are literally thinking that Starfire came to Earth in the ’70s and was stuck in that fashion. Plus, it’s already been explained that this outfit exists because the character is coming out of a disco.
People seem to really be confusing having an actual criticism of a character and a costume design with being allowed to say whatever racist/sexist thing you want without any feedback. Sorry, the two are not the same, and if you don’t want to be lumped in with those kinds of people, then don’t prop up what they are saying just because you agree with the badness of the look.
The reality is that Anna Diop was being harassed, had to turn off her comments on Instagram because of that harassment, and her fellow cast members have already come out to support her. We didn’t create that issue; racists did.
I generally lovethemarrysue, but here...
Hollywood has made it part of film language that prostitutes wear fur coats. It's how you make somebody look like a prostitute in movies even today. And it doesn't seem like a racial thing either. Want to make a character of any ethnicity look like a hooker? Put a fur coat on her. It seems even more a signifier than any other part of the look.
If costume design didn't intend for her to look like a sex worker then they should be fired.
-
Yeah... sorry... she looks like a prostitute lol
-
It's the coat, just get rid of that coat and she'd look like she's some girl at a nightclub.

Hollywood shows a lot of things about prostitutes that aren't necessarily the reality.
Thus outfit wouldn't exactly be out of place on a show like Empire or Ugly Betty and I highly doubt we'd be saying this about her if she weren't played by a black woman.
And really if this look screams "prostitute" what the hell would you say about comic Kory's outfit?

That isn't what is being argued.
She looks like a stereotypical hollywood street prostitute

This is a different medium where outfits like that have been "normal" until relatively recently when they started phasing some out.

Comic Book Kory outfit looked like swimwear (the Pretzel specifically) that some lunatic added a pair of matching thigh high boots to.
But Superheroes and Aliens don't dress like normal folk, so it made sense for Starfire.
TV Starfire looked like she should be working for Bishop Don Magic Juan or as a member of Rick James girl group the Mary Jane Girls.
As its 2018, and not 1982 this isn't excusable in any way, P.C. be damned.
You can have either the dated short fur coat or the horrible pink wig but not both.
They chose to do both those things all by themselves.

Sounds like subscribing to the tradition of tropes over anything else to be honest. Critically, Comic Book Starfire looks way more provocative than her design in the tv show. But the brainwashing of the media has warped concepts to what we see above.
With that said, definitely agree with TheMarySue this rings as another case of slut shaming as well, but this is America where violence is encourage over sexuality so this is nothing new. I'm pretty sure the tv show will have folks getting stabbed, punched, shot and etc but you best believe you're only getting a shadow of a butt cheek if they do a Starfire shower scene.

That wig, I'm stuck on that over the top novelty wig, that looks like an over the top novelty. It also contrasts way too hard against her complexion. That said I haven't seen the actress talk or move as the character other than the trailer so mee-bee... I'm missing some VFX to match the wig?????? Prolly not though. I know this isn't doing the actress any favors at at all.

More like a dated stereotype of one.

And don't forget about Problem X, dude took home the street fighter championship being Tokido. This might be the first time in EVO history where black video game players took in the championship for the top two most popular fighting games in EVO.
