BoP plot is rumored to be about the team protecting the little Cassandra Cain from a mob boss chasing her or something. Think about the basic premise of movie like Logan or Deadpool 2 with a young in peril and a group of people try to save her/him. I guess SS2 had a similar plot.
Well, it could work, but it feels like a waste of the Suicide Squad premise, at least as Ostrander set it up.
On Gunn, I agree with Clark_Kent and byrd156. Unlike Whedon, Gunn doesn't feel like he has placed his best work behind him. He has his weak spots, but Suicide Squad would fit his strengths well and not expose his weaknesses.
Also, the only reason his old tweets became an issue was because Disney fired him the way they did. If they had said that they intended to discuss it with Gunn and waited a month, this would be long forgotten by now and Gunn would still have been directing GotG3.

It's not as if WB gave Whedon a realistic chance to do something.

Bronze Tiger, Vixen, and Nightshade please. If we're going to get a new take hopefully it follow Ostrander.

Bronze Tiger and Vixen are a must. I would also love to see El Diablo come back somehow. He is host to an Aztec god after all, so cheating death could be possible.
Dave Bautista stated that he would want to be a part of the movie if Gunn does indeed write/direct. Trying to think of what big man villain he’d be right for. Bane? Grundy? King Shark?!?

Bautista could be a good Bane. Don't know about the cold and calculating Bane but a brutish Bane could work. I always forget about El Diablo. I wouldn't want anyone from the first movie back but he was cool. He needs a costume though.

It really isn't. Whedon was brought in to "fix" a movie that had already been mostly shot and which probably wasn't going to be good anyway. Gunn would be handling Suicide Squad 2 from scratch rather than trying to stop a train wreck that's already going off the tracks.
Gunn's 10-year old twitter history aside, this would be a massive get for WB/DC. A lot of people have short memories and only remember the MCU work, but Gunn has been a talented filmmaker & writer longer than he worked on GotG. I was actually hoping they'd nab him for The Flash, which is currently looking for a director again if Kiersey Clemons is to be believed. But Gunn could be a great fit for the Squad.
We need talented filmmakers working on DC stuff. Anyone who knows me knows I'm a big defender of the DCEU we've gotten so far, but the truth is it didn't click with most people no matter how much it all clicked with me; we need talented directors that will put out crowd pleasing blockbusters and not just superhero arthouse flicks (god, I will miss the arthouse style....but it is what it is). Gunn can do that. And here comes the part where everyone gets out the tar and feathers...Whedon could have done it, too, if he'd have been given Justice League at the jump. It's the short memories again, but this guy made the MCU something like $2.8 Billion between his 2 Avengers flicks...Whedon knew what he was doing when he was given full control. Nobody could have been given JL with a list of things to change and a 6-month countdown to do it & come out with a winner. Nobody. Not Nolan, not Spielberg, nobody. (ok, maaayyyybe Spielberg....)
Getting Gunn in any capacity is a huge win for a few reasons...he'll make a movie that brings in bucks and critics. Those two things will ensure MORE films get made from DC. The DCEU is in shambles right now, with only a flicker left with Aquaman, Shazam, and WW1984...we need to start racking up wins here. I was offended by Gunn's tweets like a lot of people were, but let's be honest - making bad jokes about things and actually doing them are two entirely different things. Gunn's never touched a kid, his tweets are a decade old. I think it's best to save our outrage for important things, but ymmv.
Yeah I basically agree with this. He makes good successful films and can handle team dynamics. I don't want SS2 to have the same exact flavor as Guardians but he probably won't want to do that anyway.

New rumor has it that Gunn’s Suicide Squad would not be a direct sequel but it’s own thing. This just keeps getting better and better. Start fresh and distance themselves from the first one as much as possible.

Gunn doesn't really do well with characters who specialize in hand-to-hand, and I wasn't crazy about how he handled Gamora or Mantis in the movies, so I'm not sure if I'd want to see him take a crack at those characters.

Ethnicity-wise I think he'd be more accurate to Bane then Hardy was. Anything past that would be dependent on Gunn.

I wonder if they'd just call it "Suicide Squad" again or give it a subtitle. Maybe call it Task Force X?

I'd bet they go with Suicide Squad: <insert subtitle here>. The last one bombed with critics, but it definitely overperformed with audiences so there is some brand recognition there. I find (anecdotally, of course) that the majority of people who hated it are comic fans, but the general filmgoer had a lot of fun with it. We can assume WB will make Gunn at least include Harley, because she's never been more popular and she's portrayed by an extremely in demand Oscar nominated actress. As for the rest of the cast, I think they are expendable (pun intended), Will Smith included.

Dave Bautista’s ethnicity is Greek and Filipino, so he wouldn’t be ethnically closer to Bane. But I guess he would physically look the part much more than Hardy.
Suicide Squad is a marketable and now well known name so they will definitely use that as the title, but a subtitle would work. I would love to see a whole new team. Bronze Tiger as the former criminal trying to find redemption, Vixen as the one actual good guy on the team, Nightshade the mystic. If they give Gunn a lot of freedom they may just let him have his choice of DC villains to add to his roster.
I liked Robbie as Harley and WB may want one DC’s most popular characters to be involved, so having her be the only original member to return would be ok.

Guess Leto really is done cause if not... that interaction while filming gonna be awkward as hell
The difference here is that Whedon was brought in to fix an already sinking ship plus Whedon just came off of Age of Ultron which I think is better than everyone gives credit for but it was still a misstep that a lot of people were meh about or disliked.
Gunn has basically revitalized the Guardians franchise with one movie and topped it with the sequel. James' only misstep are old tweets from before these movies. He's done nothing but knockout these superhero movies.
I am sure if Whedon were directing Justice League from the beginning we would have gotten a better movie. There were some at WB who wanted to fire Zack Snyder anyway. WB would have been better off if they prevailed.

Eh he doesn’t have to show up in Suicide Squad. But I really doubt there’s any plans to use him right now.
