Didn't Namor have limited shape-shifting powers by imitating any marine animal's form? I know he once blew himself up like a puffer fish fighting Johnny Storm. Maybe he tried to imitate a hammerhead shark and was only partly successful.

Solicitations are up! Here's the two new covers with Namor.
Oh wow, Namor's head in 1946's All Winners Comics #18.
OMG. Nooooooo!
I think we may need to put this in the horrifying Maleev category where it has to be behind a cut to save us and our eyesight.
That was an interesting look. Namor REALLY looked like a mutant. I always thought his face looked like a Manta Ray in this artist's style.
Interesting? Thor-El you are the soul of tact. LOL!
Arrgghh my eyes! stop posting alien head namor!!! (just kidding, but wow that was sure something, lol)
Nope, nope. I'll vote for not posting Alien Head Namor. LOL!
Yeah, Roy Thomas had this to say:
"When Bill Everett joined the army in 1942, his major successor as Sub-Mariner artist was Carl Pfeufer. Pfeufer soon evolved Namor's musculature and vaguely triangular head to almost grotesque proportions, but basically filled Bill's shoes admirably.
Grotesque is right.
I have no idea what that artist was thinking when pushing Namor's design to such a weird, almost abstract level, while keeping everything else in the comic at the comic book norm. Some of the Golden Age artists liked to exaggerate the elvish look of Namor, but no one as mush as that artist.
Now you've got me thinking I need to go find some info on this guy. There's got to be a reason WHY he went to such extremes.
Kill it! Kill it with fire!!!!
He looks like he was blasted with some mad scientist's ray that turned his head into a funhouse mirror version of itself!
QFT!

Stan Lee tried that power out for Namor in the Silver Age, but thankfully, it went away almost immediately.
Rev you missed variant for Tarot #2 by Alan Davis with a very savage Sub-mariner on the foreground! How I wish it was Alan Davis doing the interior artwork!!

Those covers look great. The artwork seems to be covered that it is good, let us hope that the story is as well. I need me some new-old Avengers-Defenders stories!!

OMG. Was that with the solicitations? I must be going blind to have missed that one.
I do love Namor up front and angry. :)
Reminds me, I finally got my Byrne and Jae Lee Namor omnibus. It is gorgeous. But the back says something like "Suave, Sophisticated ...SAVAGE!" And I thought, this is actually true, especially for this book. Only Namor can pull off that dichotomy.

Me too! Everything is still packed up. May have to check with the library for a copy of Avengers Defenders War, because I'm definitely reading it again before this comes out.
I started another Namor blog on the new site Pillowfort, the site there is still small and not many people are on the site since it's still in beta however they say it will soon be out of beta. Either way I thought it would be good to have a Namor focused blog there.

Agreeing with Thor-El again. That Pillowfort blog is looking great! I like the format you are choosing for your reviews. And your support of our beloved Prince is awesome! I've only one question. When do you sleep? :)
So that awesome Alex Ross poster we had at the beginning of the year for Invaders 2019 had a classic Invaders comic artwork for inspiration showing the cannon blast going into Namor's chest and the swastika in the middle.
I just love Alex Ross's Namor, he always does him right and also gives him the most beautiful wings. Marvels is classic and any cover by him is gorgeous. Remember those Avengers/Invaders covers? I really wish we could get an ongoing Namor series like Immortal Hulk and have Ross doing all the cover art.
The Avengers Invaders covers were pretty amazing. I think it's interesting how Ross draws / paints Namor as both as a young man and as a mature man. His Golden Age Namor is leaner, while his present day Namor is heavier and far more muscular. Not many artists take his physical age into consideration.
My wish art team for a Namor ongoing would be Alex Ross on covers and Ed McGuinness and Ariel Olivetti as rotating art team. A Defenders by Mc Guinness would be awesome too.
I'm not surprised that McGuinness and Olivetti are some of your favorite Namors, Thor-El. They do draw the MUSCLES!
Speaking of Alex Ross ... this news about a new mini-series he's 'curating' was on Bleeding Cool.
Marvel Anthology, a new six-issue series co-written and curated by Alex Ross, with the first issue drawn by him as well. Just left my message to Ross in twitter.
"Any chance you will do some justice to the Sub-mariner and figure him prominently in these series? For being the most prevalent and the oldest Marvel Hero from all Marvel characters staple sure Marvel hasn't done enough to celebrate his 80 years."
Bleeding Cool needs to hire new writers, how the hell would Namor ever be in "Climate Change denial" ? Seriously? Namor never even said anything like that! He only said that he didn't have time to clean up human messes because his people are fighting.

This is kinda ridiculous. Namor has had countless "attack the world because of toxic pollution" stories. If I were writing Sub-Mariner it would be more of a challenge to find new ways for Namor to confront human pollution and destruction, not for him to just confront it at all, he's done that many times. Namor needs new villains, particularly in the pacific and the asian nations, like India, China, Indonesia and Japan. India and China are the world's biggest polluters in terms of river and ocean waste. Imagine Namor responding to Chinese waste and the CCP unveiling a new deterrent in the form of some kind of super powered agent of their own. Or Namor violently confronting Japan over wild tuna and whale depletion and Japan having to send out Sunfire or some other deterrent. There could be lots of international tension and high stakes over issues like this.

That's just lazy stupid writing, Namor should be a symbol of fight against pollution and climate change when written correctly. These days if the character is a strong male and a figure of authority he has to be made a buffoon that will be put in his place and proven wrong by the smaller weaker looking but much more stronger and heroic character. Marvel is letting these writers assassinate all their strong male characters. Who is left untouched, Black Panther and Captain America?
Since I'm anxiously waiting for Tarot and I know many Namor fans from the board are as well interested in this mini series I thought it would be cool to revisit that first Avengers/Defenders crossover. Interestingly everything starts in Fantastic Four # 54 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby with the introduction of the Evil Eye. A powerful weapon created in medieval times by the wizards of Avalon and guarded by The Wanderer, a knight that has been in suspended animation for centuries. Johnny Storm and Wyatt Wingfoot head back from Wakanda into the desert heading towards the imprisoned Attilan where Johnny wants to try his flame against the barrier once more to try to liberate his beloved Crystal. They stumble into a crypt and awaken the Wanderer who explains them that the Evil Eye is the last surviving weapon from Avalon. Wanting to use the weapon to try it against Attilan's barrier Johnny steals it from the Wanderer but ignorant of how to operate the weapon it overcharges and seemingly explodes by the end of the story and before Johnny can try it against the barrier.

Thanks for this, Thor-El. We must be on the same mental wavelength, because just last night, I started to read the Avengers-Defenders War!
It started by mentioning the Human Torch and the Evil Eye, with the theory that the Evil Eye was destroyed as reported by Johnny. But Dormammu was sure it survived, now smaller in multiple sections that could be linked together.
I never saw that FF issue so it fills in missing Info. I am interested to see more of that issue's details.

That's the beautiful thing about the silver age, everything connected so well and made you want to read every interlaced title, plus characters were perfectly written back then. Another title that connects to the Avengers/Defenders crossover is Thor #207. This is a Halloween issue were the Marvel Bullpen gets drawn into the story as characters taking part of a costume parade, some are even dressed up as DC characters. Loki takes the essence of these people into his sword and attacks Thor. In the fight Thor summons the lightning and destroys the sword releasing the captive souls and Loki ends up blind and seemingly falling down a cliff. The crossover starts immediately after this Thor scene in Avengers #115 with a blind Loki falling down the cliff.

Classic art by Mike Mignola from Marvel Fanfare #45 (August, 1989):

I love Mignola (Triumph & Torment is one of my favorite Marvel comics) but his proportions are too far off for me.

lol, who needs sleep? XD
So much to catch up on! those previews look great!
As to the subject of namor vs pollution, I really think that Roxxon needs to become the major big bad of Namor's comics for his surface world interactions. Not just as a touch and go thing but really show them as the evil corporation that they are. I've had an idea that if Namor got another solo then Llyra would be the a major villain, taking over Roxxon in an effort to hurt Namor, and using Lemuria then Namor would have to fight her on two fronts, both on the land and sea and perhaps even reopen Oracle to do so.

I like your thoughts about Roxxon, and your idea about LLyra as a major threat and part of Roxxon is good too.
I'm glad Paul Renaud gets to draw classic Namor in these series. His artwork is much better than what I've seen lately but it makes me realize no one has drawn a better Namor in comic pages than Big John Buscema.

I have to agree with both of you. Big John early run on Namor makes him my favorite Namor artist. His later Namor wasn't as striking, IMO, especially when he started drawing him with the flat top. And yes, even over Everett, who I didn't appreciate as much as I do now. Especially Everett's 1950s Atlas run and his last work on Namor.
Marie Severin and Sal Buscema are also favorite Namor artists. Both are sadly underappreciated.

Yes, Marie Severian, Sal Busceme, Gene Colan and of course Bill Everett, all contributed their beautiful artwork to the awesome silver age run of Namor. I think I liked Gene Colan's Tales to Astonish work more than his run in the Sub-mariner title that seemed a bit rushed. Everett was doing incredible work in the Sub-mariner title before he died.
Oh very good tastes in artists, I have to say that Marie's Namor is very dear to my heart, loved her work a lot.
Also just dropping this here, not sure if I left a link here before or not but a while back I started making and collecting some Namor gifs, I will keep searching and adding more gifs as time goes by but I thought it best to keep them all in one place.

These are some of my favorites. i like that Colan keeps Namor's head round and doesn't do the weird elongated head with a flat top some artists do. Also even though he breaks the anatomy many times the energy in Colan's Namor poses when wrestling and fighting is great!

Aaaah. How could I forget Gene Colan?! He did a great job on Namor, especially in the underwater stuff. His work was so dynamic. You really got the sense that Namor and the Atlanteans were underwater. I do like the Tales to Astonish work, but moreso the ones that Vince Colletta did NOT ink. He really didn't do Colan's work justice -- it needs a lot of solid darks, and Colletta didn't do that.
The Doctor Doom arc in Sub-Mariner 47-49 was gorgeous too.

Welcome! Glad to see new fans of our Prince!
Much like Jae Lee's Namor was a shock after John Byrne, I think Everett's Namor was a bit of art shock after Gene Colan and Sal Buscema's runs. Plus, his writing style was completely different from the angst of Gerry Conway. As a kid, I didn't appreciate Everett's last run, but now, seeing it, I definitely appreciate his style and how much love he put on those pages.
Namor appears in Fantastic Four Grand Design (2019) #1 quite a bit.

You're welcome Thor-El!

Happy Halloween, friends! Excellent, choice, IW!! Here's hoping there are ALOT of Namor Halloween costumes donned tonight. ;p
Still looking for interiors, but here's the Halloween issue where Namor and the Defenders save the infamous Rutland, VT Halloween Parade ... and the world too.

Great picks for Halloween images! Happy Halloween everyone! I'm gonna go with the Defenders too! That Defenders #1 story was pretty Halloweenee, as most of the Defenders stories were!

Plus, the Nameless Ones! And Necrodamus too! (yeah, even from that one pic, I know 'em when I see him)

A little late, but it was 80 years ago in October, 1939 in Marvel Mystery Comics #2 when the Sub-Mariner emerged in the middle of Fifth Avenue in New York.

Very cool sculpture. I had seen it before but not in so much detail as these pictures show.

Those Bill Everett issues are so great! The entire Golden Age Sub-mariner is pretty fantastic!
