So if we're gonna go by the cover and Cap Hulk we will see Iron Namor then?
Hahaha ... no wonder Namor banished the memory of this incident. ;p
There was an amalgamation cover later in the mini-series, but for some reason, it looked like Namor was merged with Daimon Hellstrom ... who isn't even part of this era in the Defenders. It would be kind of sad, but prophetic, if Jim Hammond gets merged with Iron Man.

Okay.
Often when I'm trying to find images or information about Namor, I get sucked down a giant whirlpool of weird stuff. Sometimes good weird, but ....
I saw IW posted on her twitter another page from Spider Ham that explains what Namor is supposed to be.

So, I'm thinking, okay. Marsupial. Like a Kangaroo? He doesn't LOOK like a kangaroo. Wait. A Koala? So, of course I google, and I get this:
Sub-Marsupial was an anthropomorphic Opossum who used to do battle against the Asinine Torch.
OMG. That has to be one of the funniest lines I've ever read about a version of Namor. A OPOSSUM? LOL! And Asinine Torch. hahahahaha
Oh, but it gets better. You can actually buy a tee shirt with the REAL Sub-Marsupial on it!

LMAO. I was sitting here thinking that it was a kind of monkey/koala type character but I didn't think about it more than that. I will have to post a bit more from the comic soon! I recall the other animal type Namor was a dog, but what struck me as weird or coincidence was that he was called Kay-mar and how later Namor's son was Kamar.

Ok that has to be a misprint or something because Namor towers above other normal humans. He is a solid 6'2'' from everywhere else I've seen list his height.

Ok I don't know if this theory has been put out there but as we all know, Hickman loves to play the long game when it comes to his writing and I for one think he will be bringing in Namor, the first mutant, at some point in the comics. Another thing I noticed is how similar the Krakoan alphabet is to the Atlantean Tattoos that began appearing on the Atlanteans designs back in the 2000's. Now it could be a coincidence but its just really similar imo.
(Also small side rant here but: WHY DO MUTANTS HAVE THEIR OWN LANGUAGE/ALPHABET BUT WE NEVER GET ANYTHING FOR ATLANTEANS! who unlike the mutants have had their own language for decades in the comics but it's never explained other than a few random words here and there.)

Huhn. Didn't notice that before, but I'm going with coincidence. Though, I do agree with you, I think Hickman will be bringing Namor back into his story at some far off point.
The only reason there is a mutant language is because of Hickman. If Hickman were writing a Namor book, we'd probably get an Atlantean alphabet or some other great world building stuff done in graphics.

The height listing isn't the only thing weird going on in that handbook entry! Look at the side view picture--specifically the speed-covered areas. Look at the where the waistband is...and then compare to where his butt seems to be. Is Namor pulling a Steve Urkel with hiked up waistband, or did someone deflate his ass?
Then there's the way the front side of him seems to curve inward there. I realize most comics artists (particularly during the era where the Comics Code was still in effect) would not actively be drawing a bulge on the male characters in their tights. But even with that it mind, this still looks weird.

Oh, there's alot wrong with that listing. But we've had the Power Grid / Specs conversation before. Plus, this was written during Byrne's run, so it's stripped Namor of a lot of stuff, IMO.
LOL! First it was Namor in his 'grandma panties' and not it's the Urkel Pulled Up Trunks. Poor Namor. Absolutely NO respect for his glorious speedo. However, I bet if we saw the pictures for the other heroes in this book, they'd have similar clothing and body proportion problems. It was the 90s.

Reposting these images because McNiven's IMPERIUS REX! never gets old. But also ....
I may have asked this before, but what do folks think about these tattoos for Atlanteans? I'm not entirely sure I like them, especially as uniform as they are. Plus WHO actually wears them? We never see any of the nobles of Atlantis wearing them, with one exception. Plus it is something relatively new, as we hadn't seen them for like 60 years previous. It brings up a lot of questions of WHY and WHO and NOW?
Boy, do I miss Comicbook Database. Anyway, I'm thinking that they first appeared in the 2002 Tsunami Namor, but they were black tattoos. Has anyone seen them before this? This New Warriors from 2005, is the first time we've seen the white tattoos, with their more "Krakoan" style.

I think the tattoos are a terrible idea. First I would have expected Namor to be wearing them too if this was well executed as he is part of this culture. But how terrible, look how Namor looks like a white man that is leading a tribe of aborigines, and like a modern Tarzan they are all following after him.
To me the best Atlanteans are the silver age look where they all wear capes, chi tons, tunics and greco-roman uniforms and helmets adorned with ocean motifs where all Atlanteans look more clothed and civilized than Namor who would only wear his speedo, cape and a crown like a young savage barbarian king ready to spring into action - the avenging son, the savage sub-mariner.
-
Didn't the tattoos start with Namorita in her blue-skinned Kymaera persona? Because that's the earliest I can recall of any Atlantean having tattoos. Since the Abraxas story in the Fantastic Four in 2001 showed a blue Nita, that means she already had them in the past.

I think you are right about when these appeared Rev, I certainly most remember them first coming out around this era but if I have enough time I will try to look back further. I'm fine with the Tattoos since it's not on every character that we see, for instance Andromeda doesn't have them, and if we had someone on a Namor book perhaps they could explain them as being something that is culturally important to the Atlanteans/followers of Neptune.
I also miss comicbookdatabase, however before it went down I managed to save Namor, Namora, and Namorita's 616 comic appearance lists. I certainly hope that CBD will be back someday but until then I made the choice to try and keep updating the main 3 submariners character appearances as I buy/read their comics. I have plans to do a major overhaul to the Namor tumblr blog in the new year including making it more desktop computer friendly with separate pages for information, better and updating tags and links, maybe a portrait gallery, FAQ's etc.
As well as a link to the google docs where I have the ComicBook Database appearances saved after I make them a bit better for reading since the small text always annoyed me, also as time goes on I will be going back into back issues to comment on whether Namor has a major role or just a small cameo to make it easier for newer fans looking to buy his comics however new comics are taking the priority. This will be an ongoing project for now but I will drop an comment here when I'm done with the updates. I really did look into making a whole website for Namor like some others I've seen but I simply don't have the resources or time to dedicate to it but I hope someday to have something like that, besides I have more traction and interactions with the twitter and tumblr stuff from fans.

Except Namor is biracial and is only half white and if he did suddenly start wearing tattoos then he is most certainly not a Tarzan where he is a lone outsider white man in my opinion, he is half atlantean and is tied to his Atlantean side far more closely than he is to the surface humans/his white father's people.
An example of tattoos suddenly being used by a white character when they never have before and its was actually tied to an indigenous POC culture is Dc's Aquaman suddenly being modeled after Momoa. Aquaman is white on both sides as shown in the comics where the Atlanteans there have never been coded as anything close to POC as Namor's Sub-Mariners have in the past. So this new look and also the glowing tattoos that I saw on a few scans is being used by DC. Of course Aquamomoa was basically DC trying to make Aquaman more like Namor imo.

Also I do recall Namor had a set of tattoos in the Order (2007) #7, so he definitely embraced his Atlantean culture with them but perhaps they are in fact some kind of paint for ceremonies or something since he didn't stick with them.

However I will point out that this is the comic where Namor lies and claims that Fen was r*ped by Leonard, so unless Thakorr was telling Namor lies since this never appears in any other comic, I tend not to take that particular claim as canon, but I would not put it past Thakorr who hated surfacers to have tried to spread those kind of tales. Namor always knew that his mother loved his father very much. Yet the tattoos have not appeared on Namor since iirc.

Of course, if Namor was wearing his speedo, he'd fit in fine with the rest of the Atlanteans. ;p

IW is right. Kymaera Namorita didn't have any tattoos when she first appeared. I believe, though I could be wrong, that she didn't have the white tattoos until Skottie Young's New Warriors book in 2005. Plus, as IW pointed out, Namorita had shed her blue skin and was back to her normal white skin (and wearing a white costume) before that Skottie Young book. Yes, as Ray mentioned, Namorita was blue (but without tattoos) in the encounter with Abraxas in FF 2001, but that was something Abraxas did, and she was back to normal by the end of that storyline in FF. So, when did Namorita turn back to blue between 2001 and 2005?

I think if they were culturally / religiously important, Namor and the nobles would be wearing them. Or we'd see them consistently on the Atlaneans, which we haven't, even in the last 20 years since their appearance. And yes, if we had a Namor book, we maybe could get an explanation. As it is, fans are left to figure it out, when I suspect editorial or artists actually care. :(
Also I do recall Namor had a set of tattoos in the Order (2007) #7, so he definitely embraced his Atlantean culture with them but perhaps they are in fact some kind of paint for ceremonies or something since he didn't stick with them.

Hmmm. I'd forgotten about that panel. But I'm not getting the feeling that panel was about Namor embracing his Atlantean culture, so much as Tha-Korr trying to humiliate him again. Besides, Atlantean was the only culture he knew.
I agree. That issue of the Order was full of an awful lot of lying from Namor, which is highly unusual. I'm not sure exactly what Fraction was trying to do there.
That's right, we don't even know if they are actually tattoos or paint. That panel would indicate they are some sort of paint.
Plus, why do they appear now, when they weren't around for most of Atlantean history as we know it?
And I can't help but think there is some caste or class distinction at work, if we don't see them on any of the nobles. Hmmm. Now I have to go back and take a look at Sub-Mariner Revolution. Trying to remember if anyone there had the markings?
In case it isn't clear, I'm a bit torn about the tattoos. I think the lack of thought behind them makes me less than happy with them. Well, that and them suddenly appearing without explanation. They make it look like a fashion choice, like torn jeans or bell bottoms.
That's part of my question. Why doesn't Namor have tattoos? Why are those other Atlanteans wearing them?
Of course, if Namor was wearing his speedo, he'd fit in fine with the rest of the Atlanteans. ;p
Interesting ... Whereas, for me, it always struck me as odd that the other Atlanteans were wearing more clothes than Namor in those Silver Age books. And don't get me started on the capes. LOL!
I think the white tattoos first appeared on blue skinned Namorita, but at a later date, circa 2005 New Warriors. There Atlanteans with black tattoos in the 2002 Tsunami Namor book, though.
Namor wearing less than the regular Atlantean strikes me as natural, as heroes in sword and sandals always do. Its not only consistent with the Silver Age but the Golden Age too. As for the origin of the white tattoos I always thought they were copying the Disney movie Atlantis. At least that's the first time I saw those tattoos in media. Which made me think how unoriginal that they were leaving the greco-roman culture behind in favor of an indigenous Atlantis flavor like the Disney animated movie.

Because I've got a cold this past weekend and even though I feel miserable I got some time to flex my creative juices before the new year. Hope everybody has a a happy new year!!!

Sorry to hear you have a cold, but this looks awesome! I love seeing Namor take on Roxxon and the polluting corporations.

Didn't make that connection, but the timing is right, I think. The movie came out in 2001. Is she Atlantean? I guess I need to watch this.
I don't mind if it is going for an indigenous motif, which makes sense to me, but they certainly need to explain it and the parameters. Cause it wasn't around until relatively recently. Though it is awful geometric. I think it would be cooler and more unique, if they were more like the sea life around.
In the Golden Age, I think Namor actually wore more clothes. And some weird ones at that. But I guess I don't see Namor so much in the Sword and Sandal / Conan mode, though I can see where some story arcs were going for that vibe.

Thank you, Rev. Its always nice to get your seal of approval as one of Namor's most dedicated and knowledgeable fans around.

Yes, she is Atlantean. I saw the movie once, when it came out so I don't remember much but I recall there were more natives and if I remember well they all had those symbols in their bodies. I also think they followed up with a Disney channel series or a direct to video sequels.
I always understood Atlantis as this part of the Roman or Greek empire that sunk into the oceans, hence the Father Neptune worship. This indigenous modern take seems so alien to me as I always thought they were Roman/Greek from origin. Of course until I read the golden age as those look more like man-seals or aquatic beings.

Namor didn't show up in Marvel's latest $10 book Incoming, which apparently is a giant ad for future events / books. However, apparently the Defenders of the Deep did. I can't find the whole page online right now. Will keep looking. However, here's what I did fine.

This decree from Namor really doesn't sound like Namor ... but I'm guessing these villains are ... improvising. It results in a great face palm from Black Panther. However, it is confusing, since ... didn't we just spend a whole year with Atlantis attacking ... with that red, white and blue costumed character standing next to BP participating in it? And didn't Cap and the Invaders already "talk sense" into Namor???

I have a WHOLE rant about this panel, besides the WTF with Cap. But it is too late to start right now. I do want to say I like this artists work. I believe it is Andrea Sorrentino, but in a completely different style from his usual Jae Lee look.
This scan is also from Incoming, but it refers to the upcoming Agents of Atlas engagements with Namor. I love Ares reaction. LOL!

Awww. I'm but one of many on our thread here. :) But I've no where near your talent with the computer or cosplay, and definitely appreciate you spending your time on my favorite character.

I'll definitely check it out. I'm reading a lot of different takes on Atlantis for research. Which reminds me, I read Mera Tidebreaker ... More on that, as the looting of Namor continues.
I think in some of the various movies and stuff, they use the Greek style, because the only mention of it we get is from the Greek Plato. Allegedly it existed some time in the classical era. However, it is described as outside of that world, also, i.e. more exotic and unknown. It's location sits firmly in the unknown, past the Pillars of Hercules, past the known world. Though, they do borrow Poseidon ... however, that could just be the Greek conception of an Atlantean sea god.
Of course, with Marvel, Atlantis isn't Greek / Roman. It's pre-Hyborian, and belongs in the REH universe of Kull and Conan -- though that wasn't Stan Lee's original intent.

Not that this really matters. But in Advnetures into Fear #15, Steve Gerber has the Man-Thing go back in time to a pre-sunk Atlantis. You get just a couple pages of its city and the people that lived there. I'm sure this has nothing to do with the rest of the Marvel universe. I just thought it was interesting.

Thank you for that heads up! I'm interested, as I'm trying to piece together some sense of Marvel's Atlanetan history, such as it is. I vaguely remember that issue. Didn't it have an Atlantean sorceress? It's also interesting, because Man-Thing AND Namor travel back in time to Atlantis before it sank again in ... I think it was Strange Tales, back in the 1990s. It was a great couple of issues with Liam Sharp doing the art.

One of the women who live near Man-Thing's swamp ends up being the descendant of an Atlantean sorceress who tries to warn them about the cities doom. I don't remember the specifics to be honest.

Hmmm. Maybe I'm remembering her telling someone about that Atlantean sorceress? That's cool. I'll find the issue and read it. Thanks again!

ARRRRGH!
Excuse me while I rant.
WHY??? WHO????
I'd really like to know what mod hates our thread. They've freaking changed the title AGAIN, and this time they've just taken out Namor's battle cry entirely! And yes, I do think someone has it out for us, because I'm pretty sure we're the only one whose thread title keeps getting messed with. What does this make? The fourth time? Or the fifth? I just counted and there's like a dozen other appreciation threads with capitalization in the first ten pages. Heck, there's one other on this first page!
WTF???
Deep breath and end of rant.
We're going to get a new thread for 2020, so I'm not going to ask the mods to change it back. However, I AM going to write them and ask that they quit f%@#ing with our thread title when I put the new one up. I'll add a link here for the new thread, once I start it.
