Hmmmm. I never thought of them that way, but I guess All Winners WAS Marvel's JSA.
Look at Namor in that corner. Arms crossed and unhappy, even back then! LOL!

Haha, to have fun with this, it is one of three things:
1) Namor is mad Toro is also shirtless
2) Namor is cold
3) Young Namor does not want to show off his body with a girl (woman) present

I'm going to have to go with a definite NO to #2, and a "heck NO" to #3. In fact, I'm surprised he didn't shove Whizzer out of his seat so he could sit next to Madeline. LOL!
Namor does seem to be giving someone an eye roll / side eye ... or maybe the coloring is just bad. ;p So, I'd go with #1.
I love TigerShark, he doesn't need adamantium teeth, it feels like a gimmick to me, making everything adamantium always makes me eye-roll. Leave it for Ultron and Wolverine. TigerShark just needs to be ridiculously sharp and powerful, plus being a shark man, even if you smash him in the face hard enough (like by Namor or Hulk) his teeth would easily regrow and be replaced. That's more interesting than metal teeth, at least to me. I both love and hate the classic Buscema design. I love the silhouette of the design, I love the fin, the aggressive look of him. I HATE the Kirbyesque orange and black zigzag, and I genuinely feel it's one of the reasons he's never crossed over to a big hitter villain. You can tell Marvel and artists have struggled trying to get away from the zigzag over the years, but can never quite do it. They go in one extreme or another, never really succeeding and ultimately TirgerShark goes back to the orange. He needs to keep the powerful Buscema silhouette and general look, but lose the orange and zigzag. He needs his suit to become more organic looking, a living skin, more part of him but still keep the classic look. I've tried myself to work this out in sketches, maybe I'll post some here at some point.
I do like Tiger Shark's old look. I don't really care for the trend of making him more bestial and dumb muscle. I have long thought he _should_ have been one of Namor's major threat villains, his dark side mirror. Namor is literally part of him ... as well as the tiger shark. There's a world of stuff that could have been done with that, but everyone went with dumb henchman. The only person who picked up on this was Bob Harras in his post Byrne run -- when Tiger Shark and Tamara were a couple. Of course, he and Jae Lee also may have started that bestial look, so it wasn't all good. ;p
I do think people Tiger Shark / his look should inspire primal FEAR in people, just like a shark does. He should be scary.
Yeah, I'm kind of with you there Doombot, on the adamantium. It, and vibranium, are overused and have become miracle, do everything metals. What I'd love to see is Marvel make orichalcum a magical Atlantean metal, with specific, limited properties -- then do stuff with that, though not put it in Tiger Shark's mouth. LOL! Plus, don't sharks constantly lose their teeth and grow them back?
You know, I never really considered Tiger Shark's suit orange ... but I guess it is a dull orange color. It reminds me more of Wolverine's "brown" suit." I've NO idea why it is orange, cause tiger sharks aren't orange ... unless they got confused about the tiger part of his name. I'm fine with the zigzags, and love the fin, but I don't care much for all those spikes running down his legs. Ouch.

Well, I loved the adamantium teeth, Namor skin should be impervious to anything else so giving him adamantium teeth was great and the way he tested them against Namor's traps was just awesome! One of the most shocking panels I've ever seen in a comic book. But Ed McGuinness is a genius when it comes to this kind of stuff. I was at a comic convention where they invited him to a wrestling panel to discuss the wrestling and comic connection and it was great just to see him acknowledge there is such a connection cause his battle poses are so visceral and explosive, I wish he could do a Namor, Defenders or Invaders book, IMO anything that has classic Namor by McGuinness will be pure gold.
And here's something I did this morning.

It was pretty shocking. I remember wincing in sympathetic pain the first time I saw it.
Didn't know that about Ed McGuinness and wrestling. I do know he loves John Buscema's Namor ... as evidenced by his interpretation of Namor. Sadly, until we get a movie / TV show, I don't think we'll get McGuiness on anything with Namor, except as a guest star. : (

Hey, Thor-El!
These are so great!! I always enjoy looking at your work and new ones.
Namor looks sooooo powerful here. If they drew him like that in the comics, his enemies would run (and swim) away!
The one with Namor breaking the water reminds me of Phoenix (Jean Grey) emerging from the waters of Jamaica Bay.
SPOILERS FOR SWORD MASTER #6! It seems that we have a small glimpse into why Atlantis is so angry this time around! I posted a few panels here from the issue!

It was seems to be a second story of a shared comic, the first part I skimmed over seemed very manga by the art style, I haven't bought the rest of the series, only this one when someone told me Namor kinda shows up in it. Basically Ares came to free his son the dragon and then you have those scenes along with some fighting panels etc.

Good to see Namora. It was a safe bet that she would be what drags the original AoA into the story, but it's nice to have confirmation.

I didn't look at that issue at the store this week! Thanks for the heads up. Of course, I'm trying to remember if there's any sea serpent guardian in previous books.

I don't think so, though Pak has written Ares in some hilarious bits from his Herc run with Van Lente. But remember you are only seeing 1/6th of the story.

I think alot of the Agents of Atlas books have back up stories, and I think they all will lead to Atlantis Attacks. The first issue of the first Greg Pak mini had a back up with the original AoA team, and had an open ending. Aero has a back story with Wave and mermaids that ties in with her origins and Atlantis, I think.

Yep! And about time we see them back together. Now if we can only get Namorita in the mix! Oh, and Loa wouldn't hurt either.
Found this while looking for Alex Ross info tonight.

Thor-El! I found another body builder Namor cosplayer! You probably already know him, but this is the first I've seen of him. He goes FULL Namor eyebrows! I think the scales on his trunks need to be trimmed up a bit, but otherwise, most impressive.

I just saw a Nathan Jones WWE interview that makes me wonder if McGuinness took the inspiration for that famous panel from this real life experience in jail that Nathan narrates. Warning, the interview's narration is pretty graphic.
The fight description starts at the 8:17 mark in the video. For some reason the forum is not taking the time command.

So the latest rumor is that Steven Yeun, the pizza delivery boy turned hero from The Walking Dead is being cast as Namor.

Why would Marvel want to cast an oriental actor as rumored in the first place when Namor's only oriental culture link is his eyes. Atlantis was never linked to the oriental culture, more to the Roman/Greek culture than anything else and I believe Everett was just mixing it up giving Namor slanted eyes but also red hair for a race you couldn't specifically pinpoint to anyone on the surface. Namor has also often been portrayed with blue eyes and big and tall so a white guy would be closer to that archetype than an oriental one. I don't mind Namor being cast as a mixed actor like The Rock or Jason Momoa but the physicality that the character requires doesn't matches most oriental actors, at least not anyone I've seen rumored.
Everett's Namor is influenced by elves and sprites or even older illustrations of Loki in storybooks of the late 1800s and early 1900s. It was to give him a slightly strange, otherworldly, mythological look. His winged feet also add to this look, as many mythic heroes have winged shoes, most famously Perseus. Over the years people have taken Namor's look to being a sort of coded view or stand in of an asian character, particularly an asian person living and dealing with life in a western society. I don't agree with this view at all, but people see characters through their own lenses and that's fine with me. Sort of how the X-man can be a stand in for issues dealing with gay people or african americans, depending on the decade or story.
Namor is definitely a mixed race hero, and it's one of the things that make him interesting, but the races that are mixed and not asian races. I've seen people on twitter/tumblr be outraged at even the idea of Namor not being portrayed as an asian man, and huge arguments about race and white washing and all kinds of things. It's definitely a can of worms and can cause all kinds of toxic behaviour online.
It can come down to whether you believe Namor is or isn't technically a certain race in universe, or whether you view him as a stand in or "coded" as a certain race in storytelling.
Technically, in universe, his father was a white European, and his mother (and all Atlanteans) are descendants of ancient European, vaguely Mediterranean, or indo-European stock. Whichever they are, they are not east asian.
I have zero issue with Namor being played by and asian actor, but I have yet to see an example of an actor that fits Namor's look imo. Steven Yeun certainly doesn't.
I say Namor and Northstar are related due to temperament, head shape and pointed ears! :p
After reading some pages of Aero series, do you have some opinion about the fact they paint atlanteans as opresors that tried to exterminate all the other subacuatic species ?

What are the other species? I'm unfamiliar with Aero, so I'm not sure which species they are using or have introduced.
Atlanteans are human, so any natural human interaction between nation, tribes and ethnicities is going to rear it's head, especially war, as it does between Atlanteans, Lemurians and the Barbarian hordes.

Sirenas, they had to hide because they were under constant attacks by the Atlanteants. I haven´t access to all the story arc but I saw a few pages.
Ah okay. I'm not sure what their part in the story is, but in my own headcanon I have Namor and Atlantis forever at odds with mermaids, merfolk, sirens etc as they are all bastard children of the god Triton and a true Siren (and/or multiple sirens). They are all beautiful but inherently vicious and predatory. In a story idea I had, Namor would hunt them, as he sees them as an ocean scourge. Now for what Marvel has officially done, I'm not sure, but I can see Atlanteans at the very least, not liking Sirenas/Merfolk.

I don't have any issue with it either. The MCU is set on an Earth different from that of Earth 616 first of all, so inevitably there will be differences. At the same time though, if someone were to ask me "Is Namor meant to be an Asian character?" I'm not sure how to respond to that. I mean, from what I recall, he wasn't born in or near Asia, and I don't think either of his parents could definitively identified as having an Asian background either. I know that a few people have said that his eyes and general expression "look Asian," but honestly, at least if you ask me, Namor is pretty too far removed from a "traditional" human background to be called any human label that applies to real life humans, being the Atlatean/human/mutant hybrid he is. I'm not saying he can't count as a human or person, though I guess I'm trying to say that, respectfully, his case is more... complex to just be simply labelled "Asian," if you know what I mean.

I agree with you. Namor and his lineage are complex, which is part of what makes him interesting.
Over the years, his eyes always come up as a reason he must be asian or of asian descent, which only betrays ignorance of the fact the character's design was meant to look more elvish than anything. If people choose to see Namor as an analogue for an asian man, or asian hero, that's their right and it's fine. But sometimes the argument gets nasty, which is just a byproduct of the online world.
I personally feel Namor is the first biracial superhero, and the Atlanteans are POC coded, more like Inuit or other Indigenous people who have a connection to the oceans like pacific islanders, etc. The influence of the Roman stuff definitely came from the the myth of Atlantis. However even in the early comics Namor speaks of returning to his tribe, the ice palace, all would be subtle references to the people who lived near the northern poles. It would not be too far to think that Everett came up with his own southern tribe of people. Also the references that they were making war on the "white people" not just surface men, were all there. Namor may be "white passing" because of his father but to say he is a white hero is once again ignoring the Atlanteans are their own people, yes they are blue but even when they are out of the ocean they are a mix of races. As for Namor being Asian, I feel that Daniel Henney would make a great Namor but that's just my fancast. Not to mention as recent as 2019 he was mistaken for being Asian because the American soldiers did not recognize him in Marvel Comics Presents #1. That being said, if I could have chosen Namor, Momoa was him, but it's too late because Aquaman did take alot from Namor, including changing their comic character to an actor who seriously if he was in Namor's outfit with pointed ears and wings, would have looked like Namor.

Then again, this was from the same era which had Namor do this (Sub-Mariner Comics #6, Summer 1942):

Superman also did stuff like that too, yet he isn't constantly mistaken for being Asian because of his features until this day, also Namor's features are remarked on in later day comics as well. Defenders #1 (1975)

Namor didn't start out as war time propaganda but was drawn with features that were not typical of the other heroes around.

I personally still don't really buy it, but fair enough point of view nonetheless of course.
I recently rediscovered a Namor story I had forgot existed, a two issue story in the short lived Man-Thing series from the 90s. Anyone read this? It has some really fun scenes of ancient Atlantis, the fabled lost "City of the Golden Gate" which was the greatest city of pre-cataclysm Atlantis. While in the city which is in the deep past, Namor encounters Cleito, the mother goddess of Atlantis and the wife of Neptune. Namor weeps as he witnesses first hand the fate of the great city and of Atlantis. He even meets Howard the Duck lol

I wouldn't say he is constantly mistaken for an asian. Only a couple of times if not more in what? 8 decades of publication? And the golden age example like you said even Superman would do stuff like that. The slanted eyes description means nothing because there are people of all races with slanted eyes, not only oriental.
This from an asian youtuber: Asian Eyes' Are More Common Than You Think

The Atlanteans are a worshipers of King Neptune, the king of the sea, that right there says Roman/Greek culture. The asian culture never worshiped Nepture. I recently bought one of these comics and the art is great! I love how he draws Namor and all the details in those pages.
Just to be clear, I'm not opposing an oriental/asian actor for the role, maybe Daniel Henney or another asian actor will be cast and he will be a great Namor. If it was me I would go opposite of what DC did with Momoa and have a white guy like Henry Cavill play Namor.

I love these two issues, I asked the writer on twitter once if he would ever consider writing more Namor and he gave a vague reply. We really need more world building about Atlantis like this.

Namor imo should be played by a Biracial actor, just like how Aquaman was. The reason I pointed out that Superman parallels is to say that unlike Superman, Namor has been shown with these features even years after and he looked east asian and people have noticed. Benedict Wong, who plays Wong in Doctor Strange, spoke about it in an article briefly.

Also as I said, the Atlanteans in my opinion are a mix of fantasy, myths, Roman influence, and POC coded characters, there's more than a few references throughout the years that hint at this so it's not a one off thing that people have latched onto. Aquaman was never anything but a white guy yet Momoa played him and everyone loved it, and it made a lot of money, and no one was trying prove that it wasn't comic accurate. If Marvel does Namor well, then he could be bigger than Aquaman.
