I chalk it up to him being very depressed and not making sound decisions due to thinking his family was dead. Around this time he was also putting his life in jeapordy because of his depression.
The Medusa thing was bad and that entire relationship was based on him being sad and her on the rebound. It was a mess.

Sabretooth probably could or at least put up a tough as Hell battle. Sadly he's been dead for 17 years. Jobbertooth can't beat anyone. Lol If he's written properly he has very credible feats. Just sad we don't see them anymore...
