Thanks, so it comes from Red Hood and the Outlaws. Good to know. I'm probably never gonna read that book since I find the new 52 version of Jason Todd nauseating, but thanks non the less.
When Greg Rucka was writing Wonder Woman Rebirth he intended for Cheetah and Etta to get together, but that didn't happen.(probably due to editorial). Black Etta is shown to be with a woman in one of the latest Wonder Woman issues. I consider the original Etta and Black Etta to be to different characters. As for Cheetah, I don't see her as an LGBTQ character and don't like the CheetahxEtta pairing.
Well, this racebent, Sapphic Etta is still Etta Candy, and her being queer makes perfect sense thematically in a book where one of the title character's classic Golden Age exclamations was "Suffering Sappho!"; whether you like it or not, lesbian, black Etta Candy is still Etta Candy, period. I don't care about a Cheetah/Etta Candy romance not because I could not see Barbara as queer, but because I cannot imagine Etta falling in love or lust with a villainous woman who has given her bestie so much grief throughout the years.
-
There's Golden Age Etta Candy, and then there's every other version of Etta Candy.
Amy Reeder and Renae De Liz come close to the original, and Gail Simone's take does have some lesser qualities.
Etta Candy being gay makes a lot of sense, and her having dark brown skin is perfectly fine if she's written with care (because it kind of reaches the POC Alfred level of easily becoming offensive).
The main point is that Silver Age Etta Candy wasn't really Etta Candy,
Bronze Age Etta Candy wasn't really Etta Candy,
Post Crisis Etta Candy wasn't really Etta Candy
New 52 Etta Candy wasn't really Etta Candy
Rebirth Etta Candy wasn't really Etta Candy

I would have written Caucasian Etta and African-American Etta or simply Original and New 52/Rebirth Etta but I was in a hurry and I wrote original and black instead. That wasn't my intention and I wasn't trying to offend anybody. I usually use ethnicity or nationality when referring to characters (if the character's ethnic/national background is known).

In some fairness thats the Rebirth Outlaws book, which is agreed to be substantially better written than the New 52 one and quite good on its own merits (well before the Outlaws section at least)
Granted Scott Lobdell is still writing it so your mileage will vary on how willing you are to put up with a book with that guys name on it.

I encounter this often and it is an aspect of institutional racism, at the very least in the U.S., that’s prevalent. It can be an overt or unconscious form of bias that creates othering for identities that are minoritized and/or marginalized.
Anyway, back to Wonder Woman and Etta…
Something I loved about the Amazons when Perez reintroduced them after Crisis is that they included BIPOC characters. Yet not a lot was done with that as a storyline, especially when the Amazons revealed themselves to Patriarch’s World.
With Nubia as the Queen of the Amazons and Etta and her being Black, I’d like to see a storyline that addresses racism from the POVs of Diana, Etta and Nubia, and possibly other Amazons as well. There definitely has to be a clash of cultures over that when Themyscira and Patriarch’s World meet.
It’s always been odd to me too, when I think about Diana’s character, that she wouldn’t invite Vixen, Doctor Light, Black Lightning, Zatanna and other characters to the Justice League. I don’t see her settling for just herself and maybe Cyborg or John Stewart on the team. I think she’d think that’s messed up from the lived experiences POVs needed to inform and be a part of justice, whether with a capital J or a lower case j. But this is just my little bit of the Wisdom of Athena firing off.

You should have seen the anti-Etta Candy thread here where the poster who started it specifically said they didn't like the new version because she's black. They got some push back, but not a whole lot.
-
Which writer first introduced Etta Candy as a black queer woman? I am just curious (and yes, I love her regardless of her race or sexual orientation. She will always be Etta to me)...
-
A character named Etta Candy existed in the new 52 and had dark brown skin. But as stated before, just because they use the name, doesn't mean it's actually Etta Candy.
For one thing, Etta Candy would never be a secretary. She would never do Desk work at all.

Wasn’t post-crisis Etta literally Steve Trevor’s secretary?
And in the Bronze Age she was General Darnell’s secretary?
Wasn’t post-crisis Etta literally Steve Trevor’s secretary?
A character using the name of Etta Candy was the secretary of Steve Trevor in post crisis continuity yes. That character had nothing in common with Etta Candy.
It's like Zack Snyder's Jimmy Olsen. You remember him right? The CIA operative pretending to be a reporter on a mission somewhere in the African continent, who then is killed in his first scene

With Lodbell gone it makes me wish they could do a new Outlaws book.
Like the whole Dark Trinity dynamic proved to be popular and possesses staying power, so it be good to bring that back with a great also not skeevy writer behind it.

There's an Outlaws webtoon that's pretty much that for the most part.

Yeah I would really like that. Red Hood is basically only in minis now too so weird they haven't tried it, maybe because they have the webtoon.
I now a lot of people liked them together, but I never liked Artemis and Jason as a couple. I am annoyed editorial forced them together against Lobdell's wishes.

Ah, Bia!!! That little scene where she expressed how her soul had desired that moment for a long time made me cry. Literally. Yet another reminder of how much I wish Diana had a second book that explored untold/hidden/secret stories of her supporting cast and her multitude of peripheral characters (like Ferdinand, Atlantiades, Bia, Ed Indelicato, Trevor Barnes and Bobby Barnes, Mindy Mayer, Rama, Mayfly, and so many others, including so many obscure villains with so much potential)...

I agree, the WW mythos has a large and diverse cast of characters to play with, but most writers don't do much with them. Which is understandable considering Diana has one book of 20 pages and those should mostly feature her. Ferdinand really should be used much more. He adds the fantastical to her cast and a touch of humor and levity that is needed, particularly when Etta isn't written very Etta. As much as Wilson's run was a disappointment, her introduction and use of Atlantiades was a high point and I'd like to see them involved in storylines every now and then. Siggy has been great, but who knows if he'll go the way of non-Steve male support characters...
Bia is amazing and having a trans Amazon was so needed in the Amazon and WW mythos. Io finding a spot as Nubia's boo thang is also cool, but she had a cooler design back in the day. Reformed Medusa as an Amazon is pretty freaking cool, ngl, but I think she's off at Doom's Doorway now, or something? Idk but certainly an inspired choice considering her mythological maltreatment. I think post-Rebirth Barbara has a strong foundation to be a villainous lead a la Ms. Ivey, but who knows what DC wants to do with her.
Not to mention all the Wonder girls, two of which are without a home at the moment. Yara is particularly disadvantaged because she's so new but so little has been firmly established, and by the time it does (if it does) it will have squandered much of the goodwill she had at the onset. She really needs her book back or an arc in the main book alongside Diana establishing everything besides the most rudimentary blocks we've been given. How we haven't thoroughly explored the Esquecida or the cool Brazilian mythology/folklore creatures, gods, and settings is such a travesty. Why introduce some thing so juicy and then leave it out to dry?
And where the hell is Artemis? She killed Hippolyta at her request, got some magic or something, and now she's MIA. 20 pages is simply not enough for all these story threads. In my heart of hearts, I'd love a year long weekly Wonder Woman Eternal written by Rucka, DeConnick, Cloonrad, Simone, Jimenez, Scott, Orlando and Morrison. They're such a hodgepodge group of creators with their own styles and takes that it'd be fun to see what the synthesis of their ideas can create. Could suck, but it would at least be interesting.
-
I love that they included Bia. I wonder if Blue Snowman is in it since they're one of the few gender fluid characters at DC?
-
So how do you guys feel about Diana being a active hero I'm her teen years like how Clark was? Should she leave for Mans world when she's older or younger?

I'm not sure what qualifies as teen for an Amazon. According to Nubia and the Amazons, Diana is thousands of years old.

No she isn't. It says that the well of centuries has been inactive for centuries, and it says that was around the time when Diana waas born. I still say the idea of Diana being on the island for even 100 years is ridiculously out of character, but it certainly hasn't been 1000 years even in current mainstream comics

The WW cameo in The Flash leaked and was circulating around Twitter for a sec - looks like it's been taken down though. For those who are curious but don't want to actually see the movie (which was also my situation...):
[SPOIL]It's only, like, a minute long. She saves Bruce from falling off a bridge, there's yet another "someone accidentally spills their guts while touching the lasso" gag (Bruce says he dresses up as a bat to deal with his childhood trauma and would probably do more good using his resources to end poverty, Barry yells out that he's a virgin), she flies away. Pretty uneventful but hey, at least it finally establishes in canon that she can fly...[/spoil]
Curious to see when/if Gal announces that it was officially her last appearance.
