A video proposing that a Soulslike game makes sense for Diana.
A Soulslike (also spelled Souls-like) is a subgenre of action role-playing games known for high levels of difficulty and emphasis on environmental storytelling, typically in a dark fantasy setting.

Soulslike games typically have a high level of difficulty where repeated player character death is expected and incorporated as part of the gameplay and also losing all progress if certain checkpoints have not been reached. Soulslike games usually have means to permanently improve the player character's abilities as to be able to progress further, often by a type of currency that can be earned and spent, but may be lost or abandoned between deaths if not appropriately managed, similar to the souls in the Souls series.[1][2][3] The need for repeated playthroughs can be viewed as a type of self-improvement for the player, either through gradual improvement of their character, or improving their own skills and strategies within the game.[4]
I love Souls-like games and have played all of them, but I do not think the first Wonder Woman game should be a Souls-like.

Any particular reason why?

"soulslike" would be a great combat style for a WW themed game TBH. But not all bad guys would be someone like Deva where winning is a matter of outfighting her in a hyper-fast melee.
Any particular reason why?
- A key ingredient in Souls-like is using death as a mechanic, which I don't think sits well in a superhero game regardless if it's Wonder Woman.
- The combat of Souls games is based primarily on timed dodges and attacks (unless your going for a heavy mage build) I think a Wonder Woman game should focus on stringing together fun and exciting combos.
- Another thing is that Souls games rely on players closing the distance between them and the boss, a Wonder Woman game should have Diana close the distance by lassoing her opponents and bringing them to her or through some other methods.
See, the key difference in the innate shift in marketing. If you are making a Wonder Woman game, your core market is being Wonder Woman. It's been the same for Batman and Spider-man games (to the point its become a meme of sorts).
If I'm running around, chasing after my enemies to get a strike in or running away from them because they are too hard for me to fight at this level and I am worried about dying, do I feel like Wonder Woman? Then no, I don't feel like Wonder Woman.
Now, If the fun of the game comes from controlling the battle field and dishing out sick combos, that would make me feel like Wonder Woman.
-
Now I haven't watched the video you posed, but I'm going on a hunch and guessing the "Souls-like" desire in part comes from wanting the ultra-challenging, heart pumping boss battles that Souls-like is known for. A Wonder Woman game should have good boss battles, but they don't have to be in the same vein as Dark Souls. God of War (is a low-hanging fruit comparison, I know) but has very memorable boss battles without 20+ deaths needed for the player to defeat them.

Sure SOME bosses are immune, but not ALL. It's all about if your current game design uses that.

To be fair, death is a huge part of the Nemesis system as well. Curious to see how they rework it.
But yeah, otherwise agree. Even putting aside the fact that no competent studio would release a big superhero IP game that was in any way niche/inaccessible (even Marvel's very straightforward deck-building game flopped in spite of critical acclaim), people play superhero games for the power fantasy element and Monolith already proved that they could do a great job with that type of game with the Middle Earth series.
Not sure why anyone's speculating about the core gameplay loop though. We already know how it's gonna work just from the tiny sliver of info we have from the leaked synopsis, which says "you're going to be crazy powerful and rip through bad guys with exciting combos" pretty much verbatim.
Looks like Snyder on Absolute Batman was correct, so Thompson doing WW will probably be announced at Comic-Con.

I agree. Not every action game needs to be a Souls-like. I'm of the personal opinion it should be more DMC or Kingsom hearts inspired combat with difficulty selecting for more casual fans.

Would love for Nick Robles to be the artist but I don't know if this list is comprehensive. I'm pretty sure Ram V and Anand RK are working on an Absolute title and they aren't there (though maybe that's for Black Label, IDK).
But man, the Trinity definitely got the least interesting writers on this list, lol. Curious to see what Deniz Camp, Pornsak Pichetshote, and Al Ewing are working on and it's cool to see Che Grayson doing something high-profile.

Can she redeem herself after BoP?
Can she redeem herself after BoP?
Sure, Diana wasn’t a lead of BoP but she would be the lead of Absolute WW.

And Thompson won't have to deal with that pesky mythos :p.
(I'm just kidding, I don't think that's a problem).

Beyond the fact that I didn't like the Amazons or Diana in BoP, I don't really like the series either, so I don't have many expectations if she is the author of Absolute WW.
Eh, I don't know enough about the writer to have a strong opinion assuming this is even true which it very well might not be. I just hope we get an origin that is legit interesting. If the writing isn't great they can fix that with a new writer. But I doubt they will change the origin for this ultimate universe.
So long as we don't get
1. daughter of zeus or some other dude god
2. archeologist blessed by zeus or some other dude god
3. archeologist who picks up a magic sword of the extinct amazons and decides cultural appropriation
4. One of those dumbass "man haterz is the entire personality" takes
Im not to worried.
I was really hoping it would be someone like Busiek or Ewing who are continuity nerds that really pour over all the continuity and deliver radical reinventions
I think you can get a better sense of Kelly Thompson's deal from her creator-owned work tbh. My impression is that she's a consistent, reliable writer whose bag is low-risk crowd pleasers. If she's doing Absolute WW (which all signs are pointing to at this point) I think she'll write a decently entertaining story that's respectful to the character, uses the popular takes on her/her lore, and satisfies the Twitter masses.
In other words, I think she'd do a very popular run on the main title that would make a lot of fans very happy.
But a memorable, sticky reimagining of a character? That needs someone with huge ideas and a willingness to take big swings and I just don't think she's that writer.
I'd take her over a juiceless, empty-headed Grant Morrison wannabe like Scott Snyder, but a delusional part of me is still REALLY hoping the Al Ewing rumors were right all along and she's doing a different title. And honestly I'd like to see Thompson try her hand at title that isn't female-led, she's REAAALLY deep in the "you write lady books" hole and unlike Gail Simone, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Mariko Tamaki, etc. she hasn't gotten any big-time chances to break out of that.
Her BoP run thus far isnt even BAD, just isnt that interesting of a story when you're heroes are always jumping dimensions, islands, art work...with little breathing room. Going from "Sin is going to die and the world is doomed!" to "Barbara is going to die and we'll be doomed!" just..yeah.
Will be at least interesting to compare how the King book to whatever Thompson does.
I hope Diana is still an Amazon in the Absolute universe. Making her an ordinary woman from Man's World would be too much of a departure for my taste.

huh, my guess was they were just gonna pull out that other elseworld victorian era Wonder Woman
They used to be on the same Earth, but I guess DC couldn't help themselves with more Warrior Woman :p

I'm not familiar, but is it possible the one from Kryptonian Age will eventually adopt that costume?
Wonder Woman and Cheetah are in the DC version of Marvel United. It's possible more WW characters will be added, since this is similar to their Marvel United Kickstarters (though now the company uses Gamefound).
Marvel United is such a fun game, my group loves it. So I'm definitely going to get this DC version.
