I mean, fair enough to not ask on the DC or Batman boards, but this is still a comics forum. You just have to imagine Batman would end up coming out ahead, given the crowd...
Lotta voting time left to go, but that's not the way it's shaping up so far. :D
My introduction to Holmes on the small screen came from watching Jeremy Brett episodes on A&E back in the early 2000’s and I was quickly hooked. I later found the series on DVD at Barnes & Noble and watched the heck out of those discs because it never got old for me. I’m a recent subscriber to Britbox which has a huge library of shows from the BBC and ITV, and the Brett series is there, and I’ve watched it all over again.
Ditto. Brett (God Keep His Memory) will always be Sherlock Holmes to me.
Nearly blew my circuit breakers, years later, when I rewatched My Fair Lady and saw a young Brett singing away as Liza's-smitten-but-had-no-chance-suitor.

It's definitely not "apples/oranges" because you're judging the same exact thing. I'd say Sherlock Holmes gets it for simple longevity.
-
If you read the OG Holmes stories, it reads like proto-Batman.
I am happy to see the weird ass Holmes rights are finally getting united because I would love to see a world where an actual Sherlock Holmes movie exists.
One where he is smart, emotional, capable, debonair, and very physical.

Come at me, bro!
FWIW I like Supes more than Batman ... ;) But that always gives me a hearty chuckle because he is not wrong.

I laughed out loud ... :D

More popular does not = more iconic. National Periodicals was built on Supermans back.
No matter what Will Arnett says. ;)

I have to go with Holmes. He's at a level that Batman simply can't quite match. You can say somebody is a regular Sherlock Holmes and people will know exactly what you mean.
If you say a character is like a modern day Sherlock Holmes, people get it.
You can't do the same thing with Batman.
Have you ever heard anyone say "no, s**t, Batman."?

That’s true.
But Batman will always smell at Christmas time!

Does “very physical” mean “built like a WWE wrestler” like Henry Cavill who played Sherlock in the recent Netflix film Enola Holmes? Has anyone seen that?

I did not realise there were so many fellow Sherlock Holmes fans on the board.
To avoid hijacking the thread any further, I've created a new thread for our mutual passion:

YES! But not just that. Holmes could fence, and box, and do whatever is needed to solve a case. Be a chemist. Etc. Kinda like Batman but without a utility belt.
He grows. It gets really light-hearted at times. Holmes does some very dark things. He evolves and changes drastically over the stories. His relationship with Watson grows and gets deeper at the story progresses. His rouges gallery! The rights are so screwy so we hardly have even scratched the surface to the depth of Sherlock.

The Enola Holmes' Sherlock is the closest we've had to a book Holmes! Well at least IMHO. I hope we get more of Henry.
Without Sherlock, I don't think there ever would've been a Batman. I wonder how much Holmes inspired Batman?

Touche. :)
But in modern times ... video games, movies, TV ... Batman DID put DC on the map.

And he took down Moriarty with a martial arts maneuver during their throwdown at Reichenbach Falls.

For me Batman and Holmes are equals.
