Statements like this use to irk me, but after some thought i now can deal with this kind or assessment of Black Panther movie. I now look at it as the CW movie captures just dimensions of T'challa however those 2 dimensions were enough to sell him as a bad ass and the BP movie was made with final missing dimension which also was very strong. This gives us two very good but still different versions of T'challa. If this makes any sense.
I think my problem is coming to the movie with a pre-conceived mindset. I felt the same way about Spider-Man with Homecoming following his appearance in CW, too. Spidey in CW seemed reminded me of the Roger Stern/Jim Shooter version, but the solo film reminded me of Gerry Conway.
The great thing is that these characters have decades of continuity, and can be interpreted in different ways.
The main thing that I enjoyed about the BP film was T'Challa's nobility, and just being a decent human being. I just really took a liking to scheming & savage T'Challa.
The other thing is Killmonger. I'm just glad I finally saw a story where T'Challa defeated him with no outside interference.
Before Doomsday & Bane.....Killmonger was running around.
But all in all, I am very happy the film succeeded. I really hope this film sets the stage for more black sci-fi.
I had a lot of plans for the panther comic if they'd given it to me. Just as big in scope and, in some ways more controversial than what Coates has done. But we can't always get what we want. I like the book for what it is. Can't hate on somebody else's vision unless the vision is hateful. Coates isn't trying to hurt anybody. he's telling the story he wants to tell, just as I would have done. and I promise you some body would have been PISSED as hell with my version too.
but I do love the panther both pre and post Priest. I don't think it's hard to write such characters at all.
Now, ask me to write Magneto and we might have some trouble.
You're quite right. Somebody's going to be mad no matter what. But shouldn't you try to appeal to long time fans as well as draw in new readers instead of totally pissing off the fans who will make up the backbone of your readership?
These are the fans in it for the long haul, who've been with it through good and bad. You don't give them the middle finger.
I think new fans who would have read your BP would have been hooked.
What happens when somebody watches Avengers: Black Panther's Quest and goes dude is badass!
Then, if they decide to pick up a comic and sees a depiction of a highly advanced third world country with treehouse rape camps and entertaining dictators, they'll probably go wtf? Who is this guy and where's the dude from Black Panther's quest.
I know I would.
So in short, you are right, people are going to be pissed off, mad, etc. But you don't want to piss off the wrong group. New readers are iffy. Hardcore fans ride for life.
Give me your version all day.
My reaction to Gentles' part in Xmen Red requires a GIF but it's not working. Pretend like you can see one of something being thrown.
And Storm...Storm just stood there. Lol
So to recap the X office use of Wakanda Gentle:
- His name is Gentle
- He is hated because he is an outsider
- His dad is white abuser of his mom
- His mom is an abuser of Gentle
- everyone hates him
- He can't use his powers because it hurts
- Wakandan doctors tried to help him and couldn't
- So jean went ahead and [spoil]FIXED HIM IN ONE PANEL[/spoil]
so not only does wakanda society suck but wakandan medicine (a medicine that has a combinatio of tech, a super metal, one of the smartest men in the wrold, and sorcerers) sucks too

And people seriously wonder why I want anyone and anything from the X-Men to stay as far as possible from Black Panther.

Aren't there plenty of mutant bricks they could have used over there?
Hell, Namor is right there!
Why even take up 6? pages of the book to go over the background of a shitty character no one cares about?
Black Panther blows up and finally its "lets use Gentle again!"
Thing is, judging by the threads here, X fans love it. So maybe we are the werid ones...

I don't think the idea of adding Gentle is JUST to put a brick on the team.
I think he thematically fits with the theme of the story. The book is exploring the themes of humanity hating mutants, and Gentle is a pretty good example of that.
In the least, for those that want another viable black heavy hitter, they got one. He's still a pacifist, but he's probably one of the more physically powerful beings on earth.

Excerpt from a Shuri comic article. Still going with the multiverse angle. At least the writer says so. Not sure if he has inside information.
"T’Challa travels through the Multiverse in the main Black Panther series. Check out the first issue cover artwork here from artists Carlos Pacheco and Rafael Fonteriz"

The official Shuri cover is epic.
yea that was actually my only complaint too, especially with the first scene. I'm hoping the cgi is much better next to round especially with all the money the first one made.
The important thing is that Coogler and Marvel don't get comfortable with the success they've had when they decide to work on the sequel.
Right now Black Panther is both the best MCU film to me, but the one irks me the most. Not because it wasn't great. It's just that you could see the makings of an absolute classic if they handled a few things better. There was the dropping of the ball in several areas that I did not expect.
Black Panther is good enough in quality to be a legit oscar nominee (Despite the fact its going to receive a LOT of hate if that happens). What's disappointing is that it could be pretty much a lock for a nomination and maybe even favorite to win if this movie had more polish and care.
Black Panther
CGI
Action
Running Time
Filming Location
Those are areas that must be improved on in the sequel.
I thought Boseman was great, but it truly sucks to see so many people prefer his character in Civil War over his own movie. They needed to give him a few more wow moments. I believe they tried at the end, but the execution was mediocre. I just don't understand why you would limit the hand to hand combat skills and then made him look so CGI that he doesn't even look real at times.
CGI and Action....Man this is where it feels like Coogler made a mistake leaving the Creed team behind. Both Alberti and Castello's presence were missing in this film. Alberti just knew how to capture the action better and replacing Castello with Berman (Spider-Man Homecoming) was a dip in the editing of the action. Morrison still did a really good job, but lets hope she does better with the sequel.
I know this ties into BP as well, but how does he look much better in Infinity War than his own movie??

Also the non purple added BP suit looked much better in the June 2017 trailer than the actual movie.

Coogler and Feige should have given it a longer run time. The 3rd act is way too short. Embrace the Lord of the Rings type epic and add another 15 mins or so to the the conclusion.
I also think they made a mistake not filming certain segments of the movie in Africa. There are scenes that would have been more powerful if it was filmed in a more authentic setting. The CGI/soundstage can sort of take you out of it.
There is some amazing stuff in this great movie. I just truly hope they don't settle for such mediocre CGI, an average action set pieces.
The Waterfall fights/Casino scene were spectacular. However, I don't think they can use the challenge stuff again. So Coogler is going to have to figure out to make T'Challa within the suit look spectacular as well. The car chase was really good too, but there wasn't the same visceral nature to it like in the Civil War chase.
I really hope they go more practical, but also Coogler fights harder to transcend the genre like Nolan did on his sequel. Because Coogler is capable of doing, but will the MCU let him?
The film is going to get hate no matter what because black people are the leads.
I believe there is some validity to this. I liked Infinity War, but the 8.7 (IW) to 7.5 (BP) on IMDB is really suspect. Especially considering BP is more critically praised and actually attempts to push the MCU boundaries imo.
I just hope the movie is more polished on a technical level because the acting, story, performances, real world relevance are all exceptional.
My problem with the film is how jarring the some of the technical aspects compare to everything else. People are saying Ant-Man and The Wasp's CGI is better. That should never happen.
I also think shortening the run time did no favors to T'Challa imo. We needed more screen time before and after his "death" in the movie.
Still the fact that the audience % on RT is closer to the first two Thor movies is weird to me.

I think what bothers me the most, is that editorial has been ridiculous enough to let the x office be so petty when BP is blowing up.
"Hey BP just hit 1 billy on it's first movie! Let's add gentle to an x book and start shade throwing on the BP Mythos! That's how we will capitalize on the success!!"
