The issue is not about being "worried" about this cover. Like you my concern is how Marvel ultimately portrays him. But you can't let bullshit like this off the hook. These things need to be called out when they happen. I'm not suggesting a march here. This is a comment on a message board. A message board is a place where people comment. What I find fascinating are the people who seemingly get exasperated because others comment on seemingly offensive material. If don't have a problem with it, why do you take offense to others' reactions? <--the answer is simple but outside of the scope of this thread
Yaw, I have to take my hat off to you for keeping it thorough and uncompromisingly real on this subject.
Your last few posts have been a pure joy to read.
As far as the EW cover controversy goes, some folks can choose to defend the indefensible as much as they like, but nothing changes the fact that the "joke" was in very poor taste and actually seems to have struck something of a very negative nerve.
At least with discerning individuals who have a clear understanding of the power of negative word association and how same can skew perspectives.

Of the three EW covers I've posted here, only one has any appropriate jokes pertaining to the character on display.
No prizes for guessing which.

Don't be. You should relish the opportunity to witness a bunch of people online and in the real world exposing their "intellectual" selves.
Expect a lot of "how is Wakanda so advanced? That's unrealistic!" And the like.
It's bound to happen. Can't wait.

Well said. Good post.
No you don't get to blame your problem with people commenting on this on being "halfblack." There are plenty of non-Black people who completely get it. Race shouldn't prevent you from understanding how white supremacy influences how the media portrays Black people. Simply put, the comments were emasculating and denigrating to the character. There is a tradition in the United States where Black men are treated in such a manner when paired with next to their White counterparts.
The same cultural core that influences this cover, influences the previous depiction and marginalization of Black heroes in the MCU and even portrayal of Black characters in "The Walking Dead" TV show. (I'm bringing up Walking Dead only because it is so fresh on my mind and fits so well in with this narrative).
The cover is the cover. Fuckery in all its forms should be called out only so we are aware of it but as others have stated the real issue is how he is portrayed in the movie. Considering the current trend, I'm not optimistic.
So far it seems MCU Black Panther has lost:
Creating and giving Falcon his wings
Creating and giving Avengers the Quinjet
Kimoyo Card won't be that unique after Iron Man 2, cuz Starks enhanced PDA
Severing/destroying Klaws arm
(For a second Stark even "discovered" vibranium because the novelization of IRon Man made the new element he discovered to power the Arc Reactor, vibranium.)
All of these can be rectified and are not game-breaking but the trend is the trend. Couple that with how Black sidekick superheroes are portrayed and I'm cautiously pessimistic. The flashes of BP in the trailer looked OK but they were flashes. I'm not convinced that fuckery won't ensue.
And not to get off-topic, what the hell is up with the showing an unnamed African city in A:AOU? PEople still think that was Wakanda. I assumed South Africa because that is where they filmed it but I looked back on it and the movie subtitles says something like "near the coast of africa." Why does every other city get named but in Africa we don't every get a named country? LOL. I don't really need answer
Bruh TWD's black characters on that show are one step away from being slaves. Totally agree.
The meow thing is stupid and indicative of how "smart" people that write these BS magazines think they are (look at us ironically poking fun at our livelyhood!), but I'm more worried about what Marvel does with BP and so far it seems like he'll be handled well. What if they were told or knew what they were doing?
In another thread they said other stories on BP have popped up since that cover came out. Including the new book. So how does all that get tossed out that quick unless you already wrote it out?
You knew SOMEONE would have an issue with cover. You just didn't know the size of the reaction.

Fuck the fuckery. That is what I believe T'Challa on the big screen will do. Inspire and galvanize people to even higher levels of pointing out the fuckery. And hopefully inspire even more people to write black characters and societies in even more science fiction and fantasy. To draw more of them. And to really take a look at a medium and genre that stokes the imagination. And in the reading of, and digestion of, and wondering of, makes more dreamers capable of seeing through and fucking the fuckery on their own terms.
I don't have a problem with people being upset at all, I get it. It's just not something I'm as worried about. I think the eventual Superbowl commercial will show people what BP is really all about.
One little detail. Who is cutting and making the trailer?
Remember most of the trailers you see are NOT done by folks who worked on the film nor who cuts it.
So if you have folks that don't care for BP-they can make him look like the biggest chump in that trailer.

Indeed!
To clarify (just in case), when I say "can't wait" I'm referring to the fact that there will be soooo much bs spewed, especially towards T'Challa, his movie, and his mythos. I just can't wait to call it out:cool:

Hypothetically speaking if it was intentional I'd be moderately impressed as their ability to push the right buttons to achieve the desired effect.
But as I said earlier, I think that's giving Entertainment Weekly too much credit. I think its just them doing what they always do... making jokey covers.

Feige is on record saying Wakanda is technologically advanced so that shouldn't be an issue.
Are you worried about how they approach Wakandas unique culture?

Indeed as I said jokes like that fine for Deadpool or GOTG it fits the tone.....for Black Panther not acceptable and not equivalent to WW, Apocylypse, Etc....The cover can have a cringe line without being offensive. The housewives is BS. Long Live The King, Black Panther Roars, Black Panther Joins The Hunt, Etc....plenty of cringe worthy lines they can use without being offensive and toss the "Meow".....if it needs a line which I dont think it does either give Cap and Iron Man stupid lines or better yet something like its Good To Be The King or nothing at all.
As for where Black Panther is standing just put the trio on the same line or Black Panther in front.
What is annoying is people pretending that would ever happen for a White Character.
