The first meeting for Namor and T'challa by publication date. Rise of the Black Panther's meeting obviously beats it by in Universe date.
This issue opens with the Black Panther fighting many foes in ritual combat. The caption says that the Black Panther has to fight any challenger once a year to ensure that he is the strongest and still fit to rule. After defeating many foes, he turns to fight a masked challenger. In the end, the masked challenger is victorious and reveals himself to be (hopefully to no surprise for anyone here) T'Challa! I would love if someone could chime in whether this story was ever previously told. To my recollection, this is the first time the idea of ritual combat for a challenge to the throne and T'Challa wearing a mask was introduced to the Black Panther mythos. These elements would persist in Black Panther in the future and would be re-told by Reginald Hudlin and drawn by John Romita Jr.

Kirby #8 is the first annual tournament shown in the mythos and is what Hudlin re-told in Who is the Black Panther which was later retold by Evan's in Rise.
However, the first "Tribal Challenge" was actually nearly 10 years earlier in Avengers, vol 1, #62 with the first appearance of M'baku. It gets missed frequently that it was actually a tribal challenge because it was in one page:

We see M'baku get mad because people interrupted "him who is challenged" and then T'challa say: "So I am challenged by Ancient Tribal Law"
and he is even getting ready to say something to the effect of "then let the tribal challenge begin" before he was interrupted by the minion.

It is kind of funny that a very "comic" concept of tribal challenges and annual tournaments has been done so haphazardly in the comics. It is a really really cool concept that Coogler actually explored fully and made it an actual ritual that feels tribal and feels fair and "important" instead of a WWE style fight with ring side announcers... lol.

People remember the King Solomon's Frogs arc the best of the Kirby run, but I actually think this part is stronger. It's still very Kirby, particularly with how he handles myth, legend, and science with the Vibranium, but it also seems to care about the characters he's writing. We see Wakanda, we see its past and we see its society today. We also see more of T'Challa as a King and the inherent commanding presence he brings. I also hate the Collectors, including Mr. Little, so I'm glad to see all of them are revealed to be terrible people and then we can move on from there. Mr. Little seems to redeem himself a little bit and, for once, not place greed above everything else.
Sorry, I've been out of town so I am catching up.
The King Solomon's Frog arc is one of the worst stories in the Black Panther mythos IMO.
The last two issues were better-ish, but can't save it from the dumpster fire which just say BP punching beings for Little to later knock out all while T'challa hangs out with less than noble company.
Right now, I am trying to rank every single BP story (my personal preference) and it is firmly at the very bottom (to be fair, I just started lol)

I was sort of impressed that the MCU version of the challenge went out of it's way to make it fair. Though in the same breathe the outcome of the MCU challenge sort of justifies the rationale of not making it fair.

I loved every minute of it. Coogler is a Bast reborn in my eyes.
The ritualistic nature, the ceremony, give each tribe a chance, depowered T'challa (which would actually put him at a a disadvantage... dudes been used to being enhanced for 10 years. But comic book logic), brutality of the fights, the scenery

Felt like an EVENT.

Thats the thing. It is an event we see this big ritual, tribe members and the Royal family are seen doing ceremonial dances while in ceremonies garments. Everyone is brightly colored, the chanting the energy.. it's an event, brutal one, but still a event and it was portrayed perfectly. There's a reason the tribal fight's are my absolute favorite MCU fights to date
Hey, been a while. Hope all is well.
I want to go ahead and call it now. I think the Ultimates MCU is happening. I have a feeling they'll be the rumored post Avengers 4/IW franchise. The rumors of Monica Rambeau debuting in Captain Marvel's film as well as those suggesting Black Panther will make a cameo have convinced me they'll be headlining their own team soon. Similar to what Captain America and Iron-Man were for the Avengers.
Something else has me convinced as well.... The MCU has strong ties to a mobile game titled Marvel Future fight. With every film the MCU releases, Future Fight receives an update to go along with it in the way of skills, uniforms, missions, etc. Well, a year to a year and a half before Ragnarok, Black Panther, and Infinity Wars were released, Future Fight dropped updates that featured a lot of the characters that eventually debuted in the aforementioned films: Hela, Surtur, Black Panther, Thanos, the Black Order, etc. Additionally, they added two chapters of story mode missions for the Asgardian characters, as well as a series of end game boss modes for Thanos and the Black Order. Why? Brand continuity would be my guess. To date, Future Fight has been downloaded 77 million times, making it an effective medium to familiarize unfamiliar persons with Marvel characters ahead of their MCU debut.
Keeping that in mind, at the beginning of December, shortly after Ragnarok, Future Fight dropped an "Ultimates Update" out of nowhere that included Blue Marvel, Anti-Man, America Chavez, Nova, and Quasar. I say "out of nowhere", because none of these characters were in high demand. Along with the characters came a series of story mode missions based on Ewings 2015 Ultimates arc that ended in you fighting Thanos. Now, There's a couple of things to note about this update. First, Blue Marvel, Anti-Man, and Nova are ridiculously overpowered. They continue to define the meta to this day along with IW characters, Jean Grey, Wolverine, and Black Panther. Secondly, this marked the first time you could effectively farm Captain Marvel & Black Panther biometrics(resource used to build characters). Sure enough, Black Panther's film released shortly after, with Captain Marvel's soon to follow.
I could be looking too far into all of this, but I have a pretty good feeling about it. I suspect we'll be given a hint post credits of Captain Marvel's film.
The MCU Avengers have had a bit of the Ultimates since their creation. I don't think it's something that's necessarily a bad thing(as long as we don't get Ultimate Black Panther). The similarities are there(Black Fury, Alien Invasion) but they still have old school Avengers mixed in as well. I think it's a good combination.
I sometimes get a Force Works feeling about this team.
I hope they would start looking at how other MCU gov'ts around the world are starting to create their own super-teams in response to the Avengers.

The tribal fight scenes are pretty well done. I'd rank the Cap vs Winter Soldier fights as number 1 H2H fight.
1. Cap vs Winter Soldier
2. BP vs Winter Soldier/Cap
3. Cap fight in the elevator
4. BP tribal fights
5. Okoye fight scene in the club

I think my favorite MCU fight scene is the air port scene in Civil War. That was a complete nerdgasm scene.
But it's almost unfair, since that's like a dozen fights all rolled up in one.

Generally speaking I think the Russo's are really good at making fights feel epic.
Still amazes me that prior to their marvel stuff, they biggest claim to fame was You, Me and Dupree. Marvel definitely knows how to find diamonds in the rough.

Cap vs WS is definitely up there. But there's something about two dudes stripped of any advantages (well T'Challa at a disadvantage both times) stripped of armor or tech, just a sword, or spear, or club, and a ceremonial helmet that represents your tribe. Stakes are high and it's brutal yet respectful (atleast the first one)

totally agree with ezyo! with my ancestors being scandinavian/vikings, i like the raw feel of the tribal fights above all. none of the previous mcu fights had so many different and wonderful tribe members chanting and dancing, plus, the musical score was wonderful for both tribal fights. so that pushes it over the top for me. tribal fight scenes, #1 in my book!

I wanted to buy this from my LCS, but it was $40 . I couldn't afford to get it right then. It really is an amazing cover.
