Aren't there plenty of mutant bricks they could have used over there?
Hell, Namor is right there!
Why even take up 6? pages of the book to go over the background of a shitty character no one cares about?
Black Panther blows up and finally its "lets use Gentle again!"
Thing is, judging by the threads here, X fans love it. So maybe we are the werid ones...
I don't think the idea of adding Gentle is JUST to put a brick on the team.
I think he thematically fits with the theme of the story. The book is exploring the themes of humanity hating mutants, and Gentle is a pretty good example of that.
In the least, for those that want another viable black heavy hitter, they got one. He's still a pacifist, but he's probably one of the more physically powerful beings on earth.

Excerpt from a Shuri comic article. Still going with the multiverse angle. At least the writer says so. Not sure if he has inside information.
"T’Challa travels through the Multiverse in the main Black Panther series. Check out the first issue cover artwork here from artists Carlos Pacheco and Rafael Fonteriz"

The official Shuri cover is epic.
yea that was actually my only complaint too, especially with the first scene. I'm hoping the cgi is much better next to round especially with all the money the first one made.
The important thing is that Coogler and Marvel don't get comfortable with the success they've had when they decide to work on the sequel.
Right now Black Panther is both the best MCU film to me, but the one irks me the most. Not because it wasn't great. It's just that you could see the makings of an absolute classic if they handled a few things better. There was the dropping of the ball in several areas that I did not expect.
Black Panther is good enough in quality to be a legit oscar nominee (Despite the fact its going to receive a LOT of hate if that happens). What's disappointing is that it could be pretty much a lock for a nomination and maybe even favorite to win if this movie had more polish and care.
Black Panther
CGI
Action
Running Time
Filming Location
Those are areas that must be improved on in the sequel.
I thought Boseman was great, but it truly sucks to see so many people prefer his character in Civil War over his own movie. They needed to give him a few more wow moments. I believe they tried at the end, but the execution was mediocre. I just don't understand why you would limit the hand to hand combat skills and then made him look so CGI that he doesn't even look real at times.
CGI and Action....Man this is where it feels like Coogler made a mistake leaving the Creed team behind. Both Alberti and Castello's presence were missing in this film. Alberti just knew how to capture the action better and replacing Castello with Berman (Spider-Man Homecoming) was a dip in the editing of the action. Morrison still did a really good job, but lets hope she does better with the sequel.
I know this ties into BP as well, but how does he look much better in Infinity War than his own movie??

Also the non purple added BP suit looked much better in the June 2017 trailer than the actual movie.

Coogler and Feige should have given it a longer run time. The 3rd act is way too short. Embrace the Lord of the Rings type epic and add another 15 mins or so to the the conclusion.
I also think they made a mistake not filming certain segments of the movie in Africa. There are scenes that would have been more powerful if it was filmed in a more authentic setting. The CGI/soundstage can sort of take you out of it.
There is some amazing stuff in this great movie. I just truly hope they don't settle for such mediocre CGI, an average action set pieces.
The Waterfall fights/Casino scene were spectacular. However, I don't think they can use the challenge stuff again. So Coogler is going to have to figure out to make T'Challa within the suit look spectacular as well. The car chase was really good too, but there wasn't the same visceral nature to it like in the Civil War chase.
I really hope they go more practical, but also Coogler fights harder to transcend the genre like Nolan did on his sequel. Because Coogler is capable of doing, but will the MCU let him?

I believe there is some validity to this. I liked Infinity War, but the 8.7 (IW) to 7.5 (BP) on IMDB is really suspect. Especially considering BP is more critically praised and actually attempts to push the MCU boundaries imo.
I just hope the movie is more polished on a technical level because the acting, story, performances, real world relevance are all exceptional.
My problem with the film is how jarring the some of the technical aspects compare to everything else. People are saying Ant-Man and The Wasp's CGI is better. That should never happen.
I also think shortening the run time did no favors to T'Challa imo. We needed more screen time before and after his "death" in the movie.
Still the fact that the audience % on RT is closer to the first two Thor movies is weird to me.
So to recap the X office use of Wakanda Gentle:
- His name is Gentle
- He is hated because he is an outsider
- His dad is white abuser of his mom
- His mom is an abuser of Gentle
- everyone hates him
- He can't use his powers because it hurts
- Wakandan doctors tried to help him and couldn't
- So jean went ahead and [spoil]FIXED HIM IN ONE PANEL[/spoil]
so not only does wakanda society suck but wakandan medicine (a medicine that has a combinatio of tech, a super metal, one of the smartest men in the wrold, and sorcerers) sucks too

I also hope that Ryan Coogler's energy level is maintained for the sequel as well. Black Panther having a shorter production schedule did him no favors I think. He needed more time to really craft that battle.
The fights in Creed are so detailed. You see examples of how detailed he is with fights during the Waterfall and Casino scene. The final battle? No so much. Everything looks rushed or they simply let the 2nd Unit director take over.

I don't think it is fair to compare a boxing movie action to a super hero comic book movie action set piece involving tech, rhinos, weapons, super suits, super humans, and a train....

The CGI was completely different. They just made stuff bigger or smaller and re-used quantum realm stuff.
Budget wise, AM's budget was tiny compared to Black Panther.

I câme up up with what I call MOORE'S LAW decades ago. Basically, a new writer on a franchise must consider everything that has happened previously to have actually happened (unless Editorial is bringing you in for a hard reboot/rework). No matter what your plans are, going forward, you can't break the toys and stories people already love.
If you look at Alan Moore taking over SWAMP THING and his story ANATOMY LESSON you'll see how he did this perfectly. It is a Law I live by when out comes to existing properties.
That said, there are always character loopholes to exploit or modify but EVENTS? They stay rock solid unless you're dealing with an event like the Crisis. So, I was very happy that MARVEL ANIMATION let us make our own show in our own way because there's really no way I can think of to do anything with the current Panther book that wouldn't shatter everything Coates has done. I'm not the guy for that.
What I hope is our show will give a third alternative for Panther fans to enjoy in the same way that the HELLBOY movies, comics and toons are not the same but are still all very much HELLBOY.
When I'm reading, I'm 100% fan. When I'm writing, it's more like 30%. 70% is making sure I tell the best story possible. I never think about the fans when I'm doing that. I'm just telling the best story. You won't like EVERYTHING we did on the show (or maybe you will. I LOVE it) but, if you liked how BATMAN: TAS got the ball started for DC ANIMATION, you will be down for what Marvel let us do with PANTHER'S QUEST. It's something new. Truly.

Far too many years ago, I interviewed Walt Simonson online for an old NEW GODS website. And he said something I've taken to heart all this time:
Continuity isn't the starting point for a story; it's one of the final considerations. I don't mean I throw out continuity on a whim. I don't. I don't think I've EVER deliberately thrown out old continuity although I'm sure I've screwed it up now and again accidently. And I've had some of my continuity discarded by other writers. But the STORY, its characters, its plot, its conflicts--these are the essential building blocks of good comics for me. Continuity is a useful tool in that building but it is not the essence of a good story. Or to paraphrase a P.D.James' character, "Continuity is a good servant but a poor master."
I wonder if its possible that Coogler's action scene style can't be fully appreciated if you apply the quick cutting method. I really think part of the problem may have been Marvel telling him to shorten the fights.
Michael B. Jordan: As realistic as he can. I think one of Ryan’s strengths is that he always finds the real moments, even in the sci-fi or larger-than-life atmosphere and environment, so to apply when it comes to boxing, he wanted real hits. He wanted it to look like if it was a brawl, it was gonna be a brawl, you know? We really took our time with each punch; each punch represented a different line. So in a sense, we’re having a scene and dialogue within the fight. That was something that I found very interesting with that attention to detail. So for this one, [it’s a] different approach cuz there are a lot of weapons and you’re also using a lot of hand-to-hand combat and stuff like that, so there’s a lot more action, so to speak. Just trying to find the realness in the larger-than-life Marvel universe. I think that’s something he’s definitely striving for.
So either he just burned out on the final set pieces in BP (outside of Dora's vs. Killmonger and M'Baku delivering blows) or someone else just took over.
Either way you can't let the final fight be a letdown. I really feel like some of the criticism has caused people to overlook just how great the Waterfall fights were.

Quick IW/BP screen time thoughts.
1. Killmonger had 22 mins of screen time in BP. Thanos had 29 in IW (most in the movie). Its still impressive that despite less screen time that Killmonger is the best or not far behind Thanos in MCU villain rankings. That shows the care and the thought that went into crafting that character. I still think he should have got a few more mins with him on the throne.
2. Black Panther had 48 mins of screen time in his own movie. The only one lower than that was Thor in the 1st Thor film. I still think another 5 to 10 minutes of T'Challa before and after his "death" would have went a long way to stopping some of the hate the character gets.
I really really really hope they make the next BP film 2hrs 30 mins. Its an epic. Treat it like one in terms of run time. That way we get the wonderful supporting characters, but still get plenty of focus on the hero as well.
T'Challa only getting 3mins in IW was a joke. I know Captain America only got 6 mins, but still. He had at least had his moment. T'Challa needed to kill Black Dwarf. They were really selling it like T'Challa/Wakanda were going to be important outside of just being an outlet for Vision.
I know the Russos didn't want to step on Coogler's toes, but some of the lines and setup for Wakandans were laughable in IW. Tough for them cause I'm not sure they knew BP would be as big of a hit as was.
I'm hoping he gets a big moment or two in Avengers 4, but I'm doubtful.

The longer the movie, the less showings it gets. Hence the hesitation from studios to have super long movies. BP was already the longest solo movie in the MCU.
Two explanations for the "low" amount of minutes for BP. One, he "died" mid movie and disappeared for a chunk. And two, he already had set up in CW. And three, he had a killer supporting cast that a lot of other franchises don't have.

Batman beats Supes. DC doesn't bat an eye when a few fans complain.
Batman beats entire Justice League. DC yawns when a few fans complain.
DC put their faith in the power of Batman.
If only Marvel would put half of that behind Black Panther.
Most dangerous man in the MU gets treated like Snagglepuss.

You can't necessarily expect BP to get the same level of push Batman has YET. Batman has been the number 2 hero in the entire industry for decades. T'Challa only has a few months to legitimately claim he's one of the top guys at marvel.
Give it a few years, and I think the landscape will look different. All that stuff you mentioned Batman did, he didn't do in the last few months.

Wakanda...
10,000 years worth of unconquerable stories...
Multiple tribal drama to fulfill pages for a millennia...
Super heroes and super villains alike have graced these hallowed halls but nothing could prepare it's citizens for this...
Earthquake like tremors shook the city structures as the vibranium dampers absorbed and steadied the swaying structures...
Security around the perimeter had been on high alert as military protocols prepared for the worst...
Johannesburg... Accra... Lagos... Mombasa... Nearly every major city on the African continent had been hit and hit hard...
Devastation worse than any colonizer could ever imagine was left in it's wake...
What was it and what did it want...
King T'challa: "Report!"
General Okoye: "Africa is in flames... Whatever it is has set a fiery perimeter around the central heart of Africa trapping every living soul inland!"
Princess Shuri: "Brother... It's headed right for us!"
King T'challa: "Raise the force field!"
The thumping sounds of destiny grew ever louder as silence enveloped Wakanda in awaited anticipation...
Warriors gathered at the front lines armed to the teeth eyes focused on distant mountains in the horizon...
A shadowy giant of a creature appeared to dwarf the mountain range growing larger and closer with each plodding step...
The creature paused, looked around at the city of Wakanda and then...

Princess Shuri: "Brother, you may want to modify that Galactus contingency plan just a tad bit!"
King T'challa: "DAYUM!!!"
YEAH, Godzilla is back BEYOTCHES!!!

Look at the shit ass job they did with Iron Man.
He is the biggest character in the MCU and his comics have been straight GARBAGE
Their response to Carol being Marvel's "wonder woman" was to have her drawn like a teenage boy, turn into an asshole gestapo, and punch a hole in Starks chests with no repercussions
CA: CW came out two years ago. Marvel has been on the clock with T'challa for over 2 years now. They are going to have a stretch where T'challa has shown up in 4 BILLION dollar movies in a row. The iron is not going to get any hotter. Gotta strike now man. Gotta hurt creator feelings if you have to.
